Update - Removal of damaged stem from Mango Sherbert - trichome pics

Greetings 420 Enthusiasts! We've had more sunny weather but some rain ahead for a few days apparently. This morning I noticed 1 stem of the Mango Sherbert had all it's leaves dead. Obviously the plant had decided to stop supporting that one.

So I pruned the offending stem from the Mango Sherbert, there were a couple of bits of probably caterpillar damage

I was surprised to see that the stem was hollow inside, I mean I know it happens, but still I wasn't expecting that.

But the majority of bud looks quite fine, I was a little surprised that it was on this day I harvested the Mango Sherbert last year, and today there still looks to be quite a lot of clear trichomes about. These 2 pics are from the pruned off Mango Sherbert stem.

And I found this (it wasn't supposed to be there) :ganjamon:.

And these 3 from the rest of the Mango Sherbert, there are still a quantity of clear trichomes to be seen.

And a couple of the Honduras/Panama x Purple Honduras

And one of the Malawi/Ethiopian x Mulanje

Thanks for dropping in, keep well and all the best! :ganjamon:

I wonder if the draughting process affects the ripening time for the trichomes. Like maybe it slows down as resources are redirected to other things to keep the plant alive. Although I've always thought of the ripening process as more of a passive result rather than an active process the plant makes happen.

Kind of like harvesting an unripe tomato and leaving it on the counter. It will continue to ripen even though disconnected from the plant.

The droughting is quite interesting Stunger, and in my book, you have nerves of steel! :thumb:

Hey @Maritimer, how you be my man? Things are cooking right along. I'm learning coco lately and having a blast. How about you?

Hi Jon,
Dealing with the deep nerve pain. I thought about your condition and thanked my maker, you are inspiring.
Running constant rezination crops is keeping me aloft. The ability to walk has mostly been taken, but I make the most out of what I get. Truly think without the gardening activity I would already be confined to a chair. The love of this keeps gas in the tank.

We have a common friend here on 420 that suffers terrible pain and I wanted to get him some rezinated medicine and see if that don't help. Unfortunately, the rules won't allow my intervention. You are the only member (alive) that has tried the fully rezinated version of my medicine and at the time you were quite happy.

We must keep spreading this word among cannabis gardeners around the globe. This makes better meds.

Hi @Maritimer -

I didn't realize you were at that level of pain/lack of mobility. That sucks man. Well, here's a few upsides for you....

- You definitely CAN do everything (almost) that you do now from a chair, if it ends up that way
- I don't know much, but I'm pretty comfortable in my wheelchair growing knowledge and again if you end up ever chair bound at least you have a good resource at your fingertips who would love to help you out

If it would help you, please get with me offline and I will be more than happy to help you with chair info/selection for whatever stage of need you may be at. I know from chairs. Even chairs for people who don't yet "need" a chair too much.

Lol on the rules. I know. You surely must know I got royally reemed out over that by the man himself, right? I even had to sit in the penalty box for a while. Apparently it was a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. So yes, let's spread the word, and in the meantime I will bask in my uniqueness. ( )

Please let me know if I can assist you in any way. And thank you for the response.

Mobility is good I feel ya

All caught up Stung and the plants are moving along nice man! So much stress and yet they are looking delectable. Serious props for keeping with it and showing us all this process. I'm nervous to even think about trying it with my outdoor plants. I may need to rethink my outdoor crops and have a couple clones side by side. One droughted and one not. The likely scenario though would be that I would get too baked and start watering everything.

Cheers Azi, I don't know. It might just be the fact that observing the effects of this process is causing me to look more closely than I'd normally look. But regardless, it is nice to have some up close pics to keep an eye ball on what is happening.

Thanks GDB! The balcony over supplies my needs as it is. So going 'hard' for this experiment is not really such a risk, more just an agreement to settle for possibly slightly smaller yield in exchange for hopefully increased potency.
Good lord man, those are some JUICY trichome shots!!!!
Thanks Jon! From a distance the droughted plant doesn't look pretty. But closer up, she has better visual appeal.
The love of this keeps gas in the tank.
And that's a good thing Maritimer. It's funny with all the shit going on in the world, even with plenty of buds, I still really enjoy tending to these fantastic plants.

Thanks BA! I never intended to do daily updates about the droughting, and I also never set out to do 25 days of 'droughting' either, but once I started it seemed a good thing to document it for the record. Bearing in mind, that I am only currently 'droughting' the one plant. My other 2 are behind in maturity, so if the MS goes well then I may introduce a 'bit' of thirst to them too.

not something I want anyone risking their job for
Hey, Stunger- there's a company called tCheck that makes potency thc testing products for testing your flower, infusions, etc. at home:

A little pricey, but maybe not so much if you'd have to ship your weed halfway around the world to get it tested in a lab...and if you figure in the risk involved in that...

I just wanted you to be aware that they do exist, although, at $379.00 they're a little expensive.

I don't think I'll get spanked for the link- it's not stepping on any sponsors toes that I know of...

Thanks Carcass! That looks great as a home instrument, but it would be good to obtain the profile and strengths of a range of cannabinoids too. It is a bit 'spendy' that when you start thinking, this or that, for that price I might prefer to get a rosin press, but thanks for the link, we need more of these things to come out for us home growers.
Very interesting progress. The trichomes are still mostly clear on the MS. yeah maybe a week or two and it could be ideal timing. A good experiment to complete .
Cheers Zeb! Yes, after growing her for close to 7 months, I really hope to keep her going for up to another 2 weeks or until her trikes are closer to around 15% amber. Of course, it is tricky to make fixed plans if the weather doesn't support them.

Minor update - Cooling temps - Mango Sherbert has 'purpled' a little - wet weather ahead - testing the test buds

Greetings 420 enthusiasts! This morning I noticed that the Mango Sherbert seemed to have 'darkened' a little bit overnight. I guess from the cooling temperatures, hopefully not from any 'bad' reason. But her darker tone stands out from the side window.

The weather forecast claims we have 4 or 5 days of rain ahead starting tomorrow. So this morning I decided to carefully remove all the dried dead leaves from the Mango Sherbert, I tried to prune them at their dead stalks rather than cut any live tissue. I didn't want to risk the dead leaves staying soggy for several days and become a mould magnet to cause problems for the plant, but at the same time I don't want any cuts to create infection issues from the wet weather. Fingers crossed.

Mango Sherbert sans dead leaves

Testing the early pruned off Mango Sherbert stem

Yesterday I scissor chopped some of the bud from the stem that died and left it in the shade to quick dry in the open air. Today it was not fully dry but useable, and I couldn't wait, so I ran it through the grinder. With 2 vapcaps it definitely has got a very good punch to it. I went for a bike ride for an hour and it was a very nice blissful time.

But from yesterday's trichome closeups I feel there are still too many clear trichomes for me at this stage. She has been through a stressful 25 day period of droughting so now that I am being 'kinder' to her, I am hoping I can keep her going for maybe another 2 weeks, that should get the trichomes close to where I want them, that is if the weather holds and the plant bears up of course.

As a side note, I was surprised at the numbers of clear trichomes still present when I got up looked closely. I saw a post by @StoneOtter on the droughting thread where he mentioned that Rev would cut open buds to check how the trichomes looked within, not just observing the surface. I thought that was interesting, if I wasn't doing this droughting experiment I probably would be looking only at the superficial surface level. And @Emeraldo commented on the potency of the Mexican Sativa that he accidentally droughted which showed a reasonable number of amber at harvest.

I have been growing this plant for close to 7 months, so I am happy to wait another 2 weeks if she can keep going!
Thanks for popping in, keep safe and well! :ganjamon:

Good luck mate, its about to go wet here too like more wet than a while. I f**king hate April wet weather, it can go like freezing, hot, humid, and damp in a week, which is where the bloody nasties start to thrive, even well sheltered, in this little slice of the world.

In May it tends to to a bit more even.

It wouldnt shock me in the least if the MS starting throwing out a bit of purples, I reckon they come in around the sub 10C nights, where the ambient falls under for the early hours into and past sunrise. Get a few of those nights in a row and they colour up real nice, super noticeable in outdoors.

I really hope you sail through without issue mate. Best of luck.

Thanks DV8! If she looks like she won't be able to handle it then I'll have to step in and chop her earlier.

I'm happy that the thc level is there! So when The Rev does this when he's judging for potency when he's culling plants he won't be breeding with. One of his tools he uses.

You're looking for ripeness. At this point there's some difference I think. My opinion is if it's an outdoor grown plant it's trichomes can and should go all amber before it's ripe if possible. Careful of rot!

It makes sense to appreciate those reasons for why to look closely when possible.

But wow, 100% amber when outdoor grown? The plant I originally droughted I harvested at about 15%. It was great but I probably have never gone to that since. Only after that I had heard that some people may go to 70/80%. So at 100% I presume you'd expect the range of all trichomes would be from amber to dark? That's really interesting! How different would you find it if only 50%?

I have so often heard the 'rule', that when you think it is ready then wait another 2 weeks. Or basically just delay to some extent. I always thought I naturally were in the harvest later camp, but now your thoughts cause me to reflect on this which is a good thing! I may be chopping too early!
