Still Growing - SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Systems

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

It's been very windy here too indeed. I guess we're getting very similar weather :) I might have a first issue due to this crazy weather. When I came back home and checked the plants I found few of them curled up with their leaves sideways. I suspect heat/wind stress, but I'm not sure. First I saw it only on Grape Ape, but cause the vigor wasn't affected and no deficiency/lockout was seen on the leaves I just let it go. It might've something to do with current temperature swings too. Other explanation would be too high PH, but that's rather unlikely. I decided to keep all of them in for the night just to see how it'll affect them :Namaste:

Hmm guys, it's really nice of you that you follow this grow really, so you deserve an update :)
Today I was making bamboo biochar and it looked like that:

And dig this. It's how biochar gets colonized by fungi on a partly burnt log. It looks something like that:

Otherwise temps went up to high 70s in Fahrenheit today or 24-25°C, and I took some family pics.

This is Grape Ape:

As you can see some are stronger, some are weaker. I get white spot, bleach or rusty hole here and there, but I'm not gonna go mental about it. Some of this can be attributed to misting in the full sun... well, I wake up too late sometimes :bong: Some to weaker phenos, too old seeds, and some to low nitrogen I think. I deliberately put compost away in order to check what happens when you really go for low reserves of it in the soil, and while you cannot see any serious deficiency I think it's time to boost their foliage/stem growth a little bit. They weren't treated with anything till this point as you know, so here comes stinging nettle liquid extract, which I've been fortunately holding in my water tank up in the hills for almost a year. While I was making the biochar I filled one half a gallon bottle, and then at home I diluted in half while adding some calcium carbonate water. I'll use this in the next three days on few plants, which I expect to react well for it, cause I've been using it for the last couple of seasons, and they love it :circle-of-love: :MoreNutes:

Stinging nettle is a type of hyperaccumulator basically, exactly as the cannabis is :) It holds the power of NPKCa as 4-1-1-2 with additional minerals such as magnesium, silica, sulphur, copper, chromium, zinc, cobalt, iron, and manganese :) This is a general organic fertilizer, which can also be used to foliar feed or as insecticide. It's non-specific, which means it brings the plant to the optimum health without destroying the nutrient balance as plants sucks out everything very quickly (chemically these nutrients are chelated as soon as they dissolve in water), especially nitrogen, and gets very vigorous in 24-48 hours.

:Hookah:

Conradino, this was one of the best posts I've come across in days. I've been distracted by medical issues and missed it earlier. The biochar photos - fabulous. The info on stinging nettle is priceless. You have so much information stored in that incredible brain of yours and you make it easy to follow.

I'm blogging this so I don't lose it, but I'd like to share the stinging nettle part on my journal, with your permission. I know a few people who would be interested in a read. You should consider sharing the biochar part and the stinging nettle info as separate posts on the real organics without bottles thread. They're that valuable IMHO.

Excellent post sir. :thumb:

Yeah, Conradino is a cannabis growing wizard, quietly tucked away in the Italian hills. :cheesygrinsmiley:

He knows the real stuff. :laughtwo:

+reps for the skills, brother Conradino!

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

Thx for all the praise and repz, but I'm just a humble back-to-the-lander, who tries to keep his organic ways genuine and effective :) Sue, I started biochar thread already, and there are some more contributors, it's in organic section. I might start something about hyperaccumulators too :)

By the way it was good day today to apply some biochar to The Sunny Spot, which for those who don't know is my premium spot (I have 4). Last couple of days I've been waiting for the rain to clean it from wood ash which I won't be using no more due to potassium level being too high, and for the sun to dry it. Also more soil cleaning, getting rid of the roots, and because I'm going with no-till this season I've used only hoe :) Looks really nice for now I have to say, and I expect Ultra Dogs to be very happy there... which by the way all broke the ground, so I have 10 of these! Altogether I have 23 plants now, and I want to double this capacity.

The issue I told you about I solved quite quickly by putting the plants in for the night. It seems they weren't very happy with big temperature swings like from 60-70s (18-24°C) in a day to 30s (2-5°C) at night, and they also had trouble coping with cold wind in full sun. Anyway, they perked up pretty quickly and here they are! All in all Grape Ape and its offspring seems quite delicate strain, which I have to give special treatment to. They like high humidity though and react well to rich misting with water in the evening.

I'll start force flowering Grape Ape and Grape Dog in couple of days. I have my air-pots ready.
Ok, have a green one :rollit:

Great Update Conradino!

The stacking on that first grape ape is perfect. I imagine it will stay under 5 ft'? Looks Indica dominant to me. hopefully the smoke will be devastating. I have to admit, I'm quite impressed with the landscape of your beautiful home. It makes me wish wish I lived in the country with my own little plot of land!

Oh yeah, great plant with very tight internodal distance which is always a sign of good breeding job. It gets stronger with every day and I believe its health and vigor were pushed up by stinging nettle application and good sunny weather. Actually I have to keep an eye on the youngest plants again cause I just found few UDs drooping, and they're not even outside yet. Anyway, GA and GD will be force flowered in air-pots now so I can get the best of this genetics :passitleft:

Nice pheno of O.G. Kush as I found out recently feminized, cause the seeds I got came from an original clone selfed by keeping the plant flowering until it stared dying naturally and turned hermie in the process:

Thx a lot, guys!
Yeah, everything's quite good here :)
Weather is really looking up!

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

I have to agree with you here, Allsmiles. Most of the time I do nothing, just checking if they're growing ok :tokin: But now you're gonna see some action, air-pots are ready so I'll start force flowering and also Grape Dogs will be outplanted this week to The Shady Spot. It's not a lot, but it's a start :)

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

Ok, so here are few better photos of Grape Ape while I've been trying to get a first Brix reading... and I failed miserably :) Well, I'm gonna try later on when I flower this potential gal and she grows more foliage on which I can keep experimenting with refractometer. The only thing I really got was a circular bubble of light in the lens, which I later understood better how to look at using a mandarin juice. There I finally got a straight line :)

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

So temps reached 27°C or 80°F today and I thought it was a great idea to take some of them out to the jungle as my windowsill started getting a lil' bit crowded :) Here are three Grape Dogs in The Shady Spot planted in mini raised beds. I also outplanted three OGs, but I didn't take pics :blunt:

Congrats Conradino,

It's on now. Must feel good to get the first of the ladies in the ground. :high-five:

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

WooHoo! Here you go Conradino. I like the way you raised the beds a bit, and that you're going no-till this year. Warms my heart.

Over the years I imagine you've seriously fortified this soil. I'm so looking forward to watching these grow outdoors. So envious, but so thankful to be able to live it vicariously.

Re: Still Growing- SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Syst

Hell yeah! Now it's real! I usually outplant in May, but weather is so good this spring there's nothing to wait. The Shady Spot is being used for the third time in a row. Yes, this soil has been nicely worked out over years, I mainly got rid of blackberry roots, added wood ash, biochar and tilled everything well. The main problem in flowering here is humidity and waterlogging, and that's why I raised them this year. Before the jungle turns green they'll get enough sun though to pack some foliage. Sativas do quite well here, but with these Cali strains it's gonna be an interesting ride. Anyway, I have much better spots which are as good as my garden or better, just wait :)
