Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

YUP vape and xlr8 are spot on i use hydroton on top of my cocos too,i think i mentioned it earlier, i use it on all my plants no matter whats in the container i have never seen algae grow on it and you get roots all the way up just below the hydroton, it keeps the medium moist longer and cuts down on watering some, hydroton is quite lightweight i dont think an inch of it will add much weight to your containers, i cant tell a difference with a container that has none,:thumb:
heres an interesting note i have some clones going your way and after just a few days im noticing they look like they are getting root bumps already not 100% sure yet but im watching close:high-five:

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

was just wonderin why u dont use an aero cloner as it would certainly give u faster results and aero clones relly suited to hydro grows.

Personally, I think cloning is one of those things a bit like a golf swing. You want it to be consistent, reliable, and repeatable. Once you have those things going on, either with an aerocloner, rapid rooters or a glass of water... in other words, once you have it working good for how you want to do it... don't mess with it! Just my take!

Don't get me wrong either, aero cloners work fantastic and I'm sure can get you rooted as fast as anything. I'm sure they're especially great at larger quantities, and I've thought about making one. But, I'm finding if I plan well, I'm usually not caring if it takes a couple more days to get roots (I clone with Rapid Rooters). Sqwheels method is elegantly simple!

Did you build yours Cultivator? I love good DIY cloners - the hydro guy in me still itches to build one eventually, whether i need it or not! :)

Sqwheels will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think another reason is that a cloner would be too difficult for her to move around.

Hi yall,

Sorry for my absence this week, my honey was on vacation and we were really busy...I'll try to consolidate my response so I can also get Mondays Update posted...

X, bid, Vape, -- Ok, next trip to the hydro shop I'll look into the hydroton balls... the brown things, right? clay? Sounds like yall use it successfully, but I don't quite see how putting something on top that holds moisture "in" actually reduces the likelihood of algae ??

Is it just because it keeps the light from reaching the perl/verm mix or soil/coco or whatever you're using?

I agree, the cube can become a problem, yet another reason I like my new cloning method, no cube required, but even those girls have a tiny bit of green stuff...just a few kernels here and there.

...if you've been using it a long time and "never seen algae grow on it" it's worth a try.

bid -- I'm so happy that yall are having positive results with my cloning method...I messed up, more on that in my update :)

SB -- It seems to work pretty good...I'm sure you'll have similar results, all the feedback so far has been positive.

Cultivator -- I don't want the added *stuff* that comes along with aero cloner. Actually, how much faster? the Blue Widow top had roots in just 8 days, much quicker than I thought she would. With all the experimenting I've done, the longest it's taken is 21 days. and the simplicity of it has ... KISS ... all over it.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not suggesting someone that wants to run "production" type grows use this method, I don't know if it would be completely reliable, but all who have tried it so far and given feedback have had results similar to mine. And it doesn't matter what medium you use they transplant well to anything with a little recovery time...hydro would be quickest, but I'm sure soil would work too.

"Personally, I think cloning is one of those things a bit like a golf swing. You want it to be consistent, reliable, and repeatable. Thank you X, nicely stated...I don't golf, but I do subscribe to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I tried this on a whim and it's been working reliably since day one. Actually I've done this with houseplants forever...MJ is a weed afterall.

Vape's got it right... I don't want the extra *stuff* to deal with

fishcake -- no, only local tracks

If I missed your post or didn't address your comments...poke me.

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

Hi Folks :ciao:

I was so busy this week the girls got completely away from me...I usually trim and tie a little everyday. I like to play in my garden daily...but this week was a busy one. So today I did some heavy chopping and some serious tying down of the others.

Small veg room this morning...holds 2 WW bonsai in training, 3 seedlings...Aurora Indica, Blueberry Gum, White Rhino, 1 Blue Widow cloned top, 1 Northern Lights x Big Bud clone and a cutting of BW in cup and now the AI top, also in a cup
DSCN25201.JPG

The clones...
NLxBB and BW are both doing good, it's been just about a month since I clipped them and stuck 'em in a cup of water to root...you can see NLxBB has a little branch growth and BW is putting out 7 finger leaves
DSCN2527.JPG

The seedlings...L to R, White Rhino, Aurora Indica, Blueberry Gum
DSCN2529.JPG

White Rhino was topped to 6 nodes UBT style last week and is recovering with nice new growth, I will end up clipping the bottom two branchs and training her for bonsai
DSCN2547.JPG

unfortunately I was so busy this week I let the waterline in the cup fall below the stem and her top died :( If you use this method for cloning...check the water level daily, don't let this happen to you
DSCN25151.JPG

Aurora Indica is growing nicely and looking good despite my abuse,
DSCN25441.JPG

her stem is still severly bent and I can see some root down inside the cube, but her growth looks healthy
DSCN25381.JPG

so I topped her today
DSCN2551.JPG

Blueberry Gum is still the problem child in my garden...she doesn't look bad here, but...
DSCN25321.JPG

but a closer look inside...she has had twisted new growth from the start, but this is extreme
DSCN25621.JPG

with flash
DSCN2552.JPG

but then seems to straighten out as it grows...these 2 pics show the older growth at the growing tips on her branchs
DSCN2556.JPG

in the background you can see the older leaf with a little twist at the end
DSCN25591.JPG

also in there, 2 Wonder Woman bonsai in training
DSCN2566.JPG

DSCN2567.JPG

The bigger girls in the other room...L-Wonder Woman R-front Blue Widow, R-rear Northern Lights x Big Bud
DSCN25222.JPG

I neglected the garden last week for a number of other projects and obligations and these girls show it,
WW needs a trim badly, sorry for the blurry picture, its the only one I got before
DSCN25701.JPG

one from below
DSCN25721.JPG

after a trim
DSCN25771.JPG

can't really tell I clipped about 15 long pieces out of her, they would have made very nice clones if it wasn't for numbers...dam :rip: in the trash they went
DSCN25791.JPG

Northern Lights x Big Bud also needs attention badly...training is a daily job
DSCN25801.JPG

I've had a difficult time bending this plant, I've broken her several times now, this is the main stalk, topped and later snapped while trying to bend her, but despite all that she looks healthy. I couldn't find my duct tape, or any floral tape, so I settled for electrical tape
DSCN25812.JPG

after some training
DSCN25831.JPG

Blue Widow...her older leaves are very dark, I know this could be a sign of trouble, but don't remember why...I have some research to do
DSCN25841.JPG

That's it for this weeks update...hope you enjoy

Hey Sqwheels! Things are looking good! :thumb: I'm a bit too medicated to go into too much at the moment...but, the Blue Widow...I was thinking maybe a phosphorus deficiency...but then I started thinking that that strain is supposed to develop a blue/purple hue...:scratchinghead:

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

they are looking like some happy sexy ladies, they have a good mamma! :bravo:on the bb gum whats the ph in and out? i have seen those twisty leaves on my bbgums i find less of them in soil and in other mediums if you go about 5.5 ph it seems better, but in the end i noticed they seem to straighten out and be fine regardless i love the strain and have grown quite a few of them the smell in flower is amazing! my pheno smells like bazooka joe bubble gum and a hit of berry. lovely! your AI is a primo candidate for the hydroton expanded clay balls on top to cover and support the exposed stem/roots:thumb:, i think the blue widow is just expressing its genetics, i have found if i mist heavily before a bend/bonsai session it softens up the plants i also add a drop or 2 super thrive to reduce the stress and if possible i squeeze and smush the intended bend site.
i so have a hard time throwing away all the clippings from the moms too all i see is potential plants lol i have thrown away so many rooted clones and wasted cloning materials due to this! lol, i sooooo need a huge greenhouse and huge plant limit just so i can do all my experiments!
anyway great update sqwheels plants are beauties:goodjob:

I agree wholeheartedly

Plants look good, I agree with pH check for the curly leaves, and maybe had too much nutes? mine kinda did that at one point...

Hi Vape,

Ya, I've been watching her close...the color is so uniform that I think it might be normal to the strain...her new growth all looks good and healthy and the older leaves are the only ones that are dark...but they are really dark, unlike anything I've grown so far. I'll keep an eye on it... I'd love to see a purple plant growing in my garden :smokin2:

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

high sqwheels! purple plant WOULD be cooollll! haha I wanted to thank you for the awesome nutrient deficiency explanation in one of OMMS journals. I have posted it into my comments and find it very useful! Don't worry I gave u the cred! :Namaste: PLants are nice. Looking healthy and greeeeeeeeeeen

Hey bid, glad to hear it about the bbg...she looks really odd. One side is normal growth and the other looks all stunted and weird. New pics and data on pH issues later in todays update. I hope mine smells like bazooka joe bubblegum too...I can't wait. As of now the small room really smells like skunk when I first open the door.

yep, AI could use a top layer of those clay stones...I still haven't made it to the hydroshop. Been feeling poorly this last week and haven't really done much of anything.

I think you're right about BW...the color is so uniform that it looks like normal aging.

I don't mist anymore...too much humidity for that here. But I do squeeze and rub them between my fingers before manipulating but some of them are just stubborn and don't want to comply...I've broken nl x bb several times now. She's a tough bitch, really doesn't like to bend.

I really know what you mean about throwing plant material in the trash...man that sucks! I'm with you...I'd love a big greenhouse full of experiments

re: Sqwheels' Garden - Bonsai Style

High there miss sqwheels!!!

Plants are looking beautiful for not being totally cared for!!!

Try looking into high levels of Nitrogen for the darker leaves.

Hi J85,

Nice to see you...thanks, I've just been a little under the weather and haven't done a lot of training for about 10 days now...they are really getting out of control...I wish I could flower them, it's just wayyy too warm. I actually think the dark green may be normal for the strain...it's too perfectly (dis) colored... if that makes sense.

yep...kiss and don't mess with what works...a couple of my favorites, I try to stick to them.

hmmm...pH issues seem to be my norm...I still have trouble with understanding the whole water/pH technicalities. I'm definately no chemist...more on that in this weeks update. I'll try to get to it yet tonight...might have to wait until tomorrow, sorry...not feeling well.

Hi Deege,

Thanks...ya purple is my favorite color anyway...growing some purple mj would be too cool.

About the nute def charts...I'm really glad it helped you...but you shouldn't credit me, it didn't originate with me. I found it here somewhere and just regurgitated (sp) it into OMM's journal...I'm not even sure which one you're talkling about...I've put a couple into my sig, mostly because I have to refer back to them so often I wanted to put them somewhere I could find them easily.

Degee

Ok, I know what you're talking about...somebody posted a chart with an explanation for each def listed below, but the print was sooo small nobody could read it. I got out a magnifying glass and *typed* it so we could all read it. Anyway I'm glad it helped you, that's what it's all about.
