SoilGirl's Indoor Organic Soil Medical Grow Journal - Mars II 1600 & Other LEDs

Looking lovely as always SG!! I so want to try that fluxing method. Maybe next grow.

~K~:Namaste:
And thank you you're too kind as always Khraeyvn! :) And where there's a dreaming fluxer there's a way my friend! ;)

Actually Soilgirl the 3rd picture looks awful frosty - you could call her the Blizzard bud lol

Hey on the flux, doesnt it kill you to defol? I hate doing it - I feel like im torturing the poor thing. Bad enough to tie her down but to cut off so much ugggg I know the reward is great in the end but to get there its killer. I just keep looking over at Lightaddicts guide to reassure myself. Yours still look pretty - they should be huge in the end - How much longer till you let them go vertical?
Hahaha yeah that's not a bad bud pic, good lighting, if only it were a little better centered... lol. That's why I call myself camera challenged. :passitleft:

And definitely, defol gives me some mixed feelings, those leaves were so beautiful and pungent and seemed to be driving the force of the growing. But it helps that my worms got a nice fresh layer of bedding out of it, and my dad got a little CBD juice health shot out of it. (go check out Gfc's juicing thread here: Juicing The Plant For Her CBD's) - he wasn't happy at all about that, he said it tasted awfully bitter lol. But, while my mom's here, we can team up and make him do what's good for him lol. He had a series of seizures the other night, and while I'm skeptical of the CBD content in these leaves, I know these were grown all organically with no sprays besides neem oil on the OG PR... which I fed to the worms... maybe they won't be so happy... (worms hate oily stuff) oh well.. I rinsed them off at least first. ;)

Oh vertical, they were already going vertical haha, but LA told me I should re-train some of the outer colas since I kinda had a ring-inside-a-ring thing going on with CK#1. BBK has been going vert for a while, it's actually probably 6-7 inches vert now! I'm excited :) although the node spacing could be a lot better haha.

Thanks for stopping by nhteatime! Flux on my fellow fluxer
Happy TokerDaze SG:)......while you two are debating which is the best pic.....just pass that bud through here and i will smmoke it for you:)lol:rofl:
hahaha actually GD- my mom and I just vaped half of that nug. saving the other half for the ball drop tomorrow night :) oh my god it was hilarious. She took this huge pull on the whip, and just pulled a Radogast face from the first hobbit movie ;) then she got the reddest eyes and could barely keep them open, and was giggling and dancing to the music I was playing and smoking with our infamous stoner dog Loki, who was very insistent. Then 15 minutes later... now she's out cold right next to me. Full circle  I really enjoy this Euphoria.. glad I found another seed of it!
Hi ya soilgirl!

Hope your Christmas was awesome! Everything is looking stellar in your garden as usual.

Happy Tuesday:volcano-smiley:
My X-mas was wonderful doc, I hope the same to you. Thank you for the kind words hahaha happy tokersday and happy soon-to-be new year!!

Hey Guys!! Some awesome news. I got some ahimsa neem cake and gaia glacial rock dust on top of that crustacean meal, kelp meal, and oyster shell flour I already had. (Crustacean meal was from a private seller online, it came in a ziplock bag with no labels lol - but the kelp meal and oyster shell powder were both a 'down to earth' boxed brand.) So I was mixing tons of soil today - because these are some of the best and most important ingredients in top notch living organic soil. I made use of a lot of the old soil I've been waiting to re-use. I foolishly let the soil dry out and die after growing in it the first time round though so I just decided to mix this all up and re-amend it again.

I went with Clackamas Coot's mix as advocated by COorganics. here's a copy paste from his journal.

"Clackamas Coot soil mix:

"Equal parts of Sphagnum peat moss, some aeration deal (pumice, rice hulls, lava rock - whatever is sitting in the garage) and finally some mix of humus - my compost, worm castings some black leaf mold I bought from the local 'worm guy'
To each 1 c.f. of this mix I add the following:
1/2 cup organic Neem meal
1/2 cup organic Kelp meal
1/2 cup Crab meal (or Crustacean meal when available - it has Shrimp meal with the Crab meal. It's a local product from the fisheries on the Oregon & Washington Coasts)
4 cups of some minerals - rock dust
...
The Rock Dust Recipe
4x - Glacial Rock Dust - Canadian Glacial (Gaia Green label)
1x - Bentonite - from the pottery supply store
1x - Oyster Shell Powder - the standard product from San Francisco Bay
1x - Basalt - from Redmond, Oregon (new product at Concentrates - about $18.00) ."

I believe that this recipe allows for some substitutions and that the biggest thing is to stick to the 1/3 SPM, 1/3 aeration, 1/3 humus and the amendments at the specified ratios. I have seen people (including myself) vary the actually "rock dusts" but don't if you can help it, and certainly don't omit the oyster shell flour in place of something else.

Living organic soil is very rewarding to grow in, give it a try, no one has ever looked back after going this route."

I used some Ancient Forest, Wiggle Worm EWC, and lots of leaves from the leaf pile as the humus part of the equation, perlite (I know perlites not ideal... but I have so freaking much of it. I can't fight the feeling that I need to use it. Sorry soil microbes, not gonna be breaking down my aeration deal much.. >.<), and the reused soil as the SPM part. It's mainly SPM, but it also has some of my backyard soil and homemade compost in it, and some perlite/vermiculite. I also threw a few handfuls of vermiculite in, just for some organic matter that retains water.

I followed the amendments except, instead of bentonite and basalt dust I subbed azomite/excellerite mixed together. Just gotta make do with what I got, although I'd love to stick to CC's rock dust recipe in the future.

Now I'm cooking the soil in a 10 gallon smartpot and a big probably 20-25 gallon tub. I also did a top dressing of equal parts ahimsa neem cake, oyster shell flour, crustacean meal, and kelp meal for all the other plants, watered in underneath the mulch. My grow room in dry high altitude CO smells like a salty seashore now with lots of seaweed lol.

This is a really big deal actually, combining these ingredients, particularly the Neem, Kelp and Crustacean meal, my understanding is you're providing your soil with chitinases* which activate your plant's systemic resistance abilities. Also you're making an environment that soil pests hate, you break their cycle by killing the eggs in the soil with these ingredients, especially NEEM+KELP. USE NEEM+KELP MEAL FOR GNATS!! Back to systemic resistance, this stuff signals your plant to become more pungent and build up strength to fight off infection or invaders, ending up in a stronger more flavorful harvest by increasing terpenes/terpenoids, whether its buds or tomatoes you're growing!! This group really is a holy trinity of organic amendments (Perhaps add Oyster Shell Flour as a fourth amazing amendment) ... If you're wondering how to grow better organic buds and you're not using these... use them.

my gnat problems will be gone soon ;) and my plants will be much stronger.

*chitinases: enzymes which degrade chitin. Chitin is what insect shells/insect's eggshells are made of. "Chitinases contribute to the generation of carbon and nitrogen in the ecosystem. Chitin and chitinolytic enzymes are gaining importance for their biotechnological applications, especially the chitinases exploited in agriculture fields to control pathogens."

Bye Bye 2014 - Short Update!

Let's start with today's transplants. OG Kush PR's clone and both the scraggly CK#1 clones got transplanted today. None look particularly chipper but that will change. They'll take a few days to get used to their new homes, then there should be the start of noticeable new growth in all of them, though the CK#1's aren't well rooted at all, they've got roots, and as my BBK flux taught me... that's enough.

I've been cooking some LOS soil for a couple days for OG PR, there's even a start to the top cover!

You guys ready for the new year?? I am!! :) Take care and have a hazy new year 420 friends! :partyboy: :volcano-smiley:

Amazing update, thanks for taking the time and effort to do these. I have spent the last two days working in our raised veggy garden beds here at my place.

I also built a raised bed garden for my parents two years ago. It was a barky like primary substance when I carried the 50 bags of material to the box. I went back today, and was looking at it. It had multi year sweet potatoes growing, tomato's on the vine in Dec and when I dug into the soil. It was the most amazing dark black almost soil. healthy Worms everywhere. I was shocked with how happy that bed is. It has a growing living ecosphire year around now. I dug up 5 sweet potato's, thinking of you and your soil adventures...

Kali Mera SoilGirl. Yes, thank you indeed for posting that recipe. It is duly copied and pasted into my Soil file. :) Brilliant. Although the only digging I'll be doing today is to find the car and motorbike - we've woken to about 5 feet of snow, and it's still coming down. :yikes:

Have a mulch-tastic New Year.
:circle-of-love:

Hahahaha since I posted that darn update I've been editing it - sitting here listening to that IPM Adam Dunn show I realized I really missed a lot of what they were saying the first time through! Glad I went back through it! If you read that update just after I posted it, you may want to go back through where I talk about chitin and learn what I learned in the past hr or so about chitinases vs chitin haha. I put a '*' up next to it ;)

Aw thanks you guys! :) akisunni, I really got a kick out of you thinking about me and my soil adventures. That sounds like a wonderful bed you got going for them, lucky parents hahah! I bet those beds you're building for yourself will reward you just as much soon ;) thank you for coming by, and no thank you for appreciating my time doing these! If I thought no one was listening or cared, I wouldn't do them. :passitleft:

Mr. Teddy, oh my goodness best of luck digging yourself out! It's been rather flipping cold here too if I say so myself. Whenever the dog I'm snuggling decides they have to go to outside and go potty during the night, I wake up shivering lol. Then they either come back, or I drag them back for the body warmth lol. You better be keeping Mrs. Teddy warm at night! You're very welcome - just passing on the information so generously passed on to me - by CO :Namaste: - and it will certainly be mulchtastic :) :slide:

And thanks CO - speak of the organic devil. Yeah UGH. Mad at myself for messing up that third pic... it had good potential. And now I can't re-take it, having smoked half of it lol. Well, thanks for the input/praise! :green_heart:

Loving that living mulch SoilGirl. :green_heart: The grow is coming along beautifully. You've caught that LOS fever, and there's no turning back now. Once you have the soil cooked and planted you won't need to till it. Think of the beauty of an extended Mycorrihizal community, those hyphae reaching out to the soil to bring in nutrients to your plants.

I posted on my journal my recent find to combat fungus gnats : mosquito dunks. Inexpensive and relatively easy to find. Check it out and dream of a garden free of these pests.

Excellent update. Just what we've come to expect.

Happy New Year. Enjoy the rest of the nug.

Hey there Soil Girl

Happy New Year!! I hope the new year brings you much peace, with peace goes happiness.

thanks for the advice.

Lovely updates soil Gir :ciao:
How long did your clones take to root,Just wondering cause I never did any cloning:bongrip:
Its new year again so get yer finest bud an burn some doobies into the new year:circle-of-love::peace::circle-of-love:
oh hmm.... well Ghost OG took 3 weeks, the two Diesels I think only took 14 days - might have to check me on that - RCB and Blue Blood showed roots the day before yesterday, meaning they took 15 days, the CK#1's took 4-5 weeks lol and look like total crap, but they'll make it I'm sure.. unless I go stomp on them or something lol... OG PR took 3 weeks, and CK#2 is on it's 4th. ;) - I had some algae problems in the cloner and also some mold problems.

Happy new year Jaga!! Burning some satya sai baba nagchampa and heating up the vape thinking of you!

Sue, I followed one of your links and was inspired to add the living mulch to all my containers, whether they're a final container or not, so that I can encourage mycorrhizal growth across a whole, established root network, rather than a single cannabis plant's growing roots' structure. :) You're such a wonderful and serene source of info, thank you for that!! I'm definitely hooked on LOS now lol - and I'm barely started!

Speaking of info, thanks for the info on the mosquito dunks!! I had assumed they were some chemical based dunk after seeing Radogast's horrific results, and just posted my first blog entry after a response in k0ncept's journal talking about organic IPM to fight off gnats rather than things like mosquito dunks, azamax, DE, root aphid drenches, etc.

But I want to make one thing clear to other followers of my journal. I don't think a mosquito dunk would ever be necessary as long as you incorporate Neem Cake/Meal, Kelp Meal, and Crustacean/Crab meal into your organic soil mix, or use it as a top dressing. (all at equal parts) ... and this is very preferable imo, because those meals do so many good things for your soil and plants. (see my only blog post to read more lol - much better worded than my post here in this journal the other day)

I watered my top dressing in just the other day... going back into my grow rooms... there's no gnats. not a single one buzzing in front of my face... Clackamas Coot advocates using these 3 ingredients as a top dressing at the first signs of soil gnats, and he says every time he's done it, they were gone for good. I have faith in his ways ;)

Thank you so much for the kind words Sue, I will definitely enjoy the rest of the nug with my mom, maybe my dad too if he's in the mood ;) -just he's not been very keen on buds lately, only vodka. >.<

Happy New Year to you and Dale!! :green_heart:
Happy New Year SG:):circle-of-love:
