Snow White & More

re: Snow White & More

is this guys telling me true? or am I thinking I will run cooler with a hanging 125 watt cfl and 6 side 20 watt cfls? (250 watts of cfl)

the unit says 120 volts @ 3.2 running amps and startup is like 4.3 amps or something. if you do 120 * 3.2 that's like running 400 watts

"With alternating current, the equation Wattage = Voltage x Amperage doesn’t exactly apply. You have to take the power factor into account, which essentially represents the efficiency of an electrical device. The Mini Sunburst isn’t quite as efficient as other higher wattage HID systems, therefore the higher amperage rating. The 150W Sunburst will produce about 180W of heat (150W to bulb, around 30W to the ballast).

How I understand it, you must compare wattages. 250W of CFL lighting will produce more overall heat than a 150W HID. 250W CFL will produce about the same overall heat as a 250W HID. While different lighting systems have different efficiencies and light output, all energy used eventually ends up as heat (light dissipates as heat, otherwise a room would stay lit after you turn a bulb off). That being said, the 150W HID system actually draws more like 180W (therefore putting out 180W of heat).

im currently running 180 watts and running it without burning the house down.

im torn man

re: Snow White & More

Not sure. The ballast will emit heat also this is true, but the cfl has one built in also that creates heat. Without both side by side in the same room its hard for me to say because so many factors as he stated many things come into play including the environment.

re: Snow White & More

maybe the cfls would be better cause the heat isn't concentrated in one spot. but doesn't a fan solve that? ugh.

re: Snow White & More

If your that worried I would ask/search the web or ask a trained individual. The very least call a well respected horticulture store and tell them "kind of" your dilemma and ask if you could speak with the most knowledgeable staff member, they'll be happy to help. I'd hate to steer ya wrong b. , if the heats similar I'd go hid I get better results personally.

re: Snow White & More

Brokes on it! Every time go to check a msg alert they've already slid through. I'm a bit slower , but meant well:lot-o-toke:

re: Snow White & More

Hey b.real.

I found after running both the CFL's and the HPS for an hour each. The HPS got considerably hotter than the same wattage of CFL's. About 7 degress celcius to be exact lol. The heat from the CFL's was also spread around the tent more, where as the HPS focused most of the heat below the bulb, getting cooler to the outer walls of the tent.

I would say the hood on the HPS did contribute to an extent forcing the heat down and out, rather than allowing it to rise directly above as the CFL's do. I also didn't take the HPS ballasts heat into account as this is generally stored outside the grow area anyway.

:Namaste:

You have answered a couple of questions for me with this test too! Thank you!

re: Snow White & More

thanks guys. I might try the cfl route just because my room is tight. the guy says 250 watts of cfl will produce 250 watts of heat, while the 150 watt hid unit will produce around 180 watts of heat because of its single phase power factor of about .45

thing is with the cfls the lights and ballasts aren't concentrated in one spot and therefore the heat is dispersed more easily, so im counting on that to keep my room cool enough.

I am running 180 watts right now, so I should be ok? but that means ill be ok with the 150 watt hid -_-

ugh. im still torn. I can just move the heat off the hid with a fan..

edit: Im just gonna go the fluorescent route. I cant have 180 watts of heat concentrated by the ceiling. hopefully I can run 250 watts of cfl in there, because that will give me the same lumens as the 150 hid at around 15k lumens :)

I know the light doesn't penetrate as well as an hids but oh well

re: Snow White & More

I think you'll be fine b.real with the increase of CFL wattage especially if you use sidelighting. I have nearly half, in wattage and lumens, of my CFL lighting as sidelighting and that spreading out of the light helps to compensate a bit for the lack of penetration as compared to HIDs. My grow uses 434 watts during vegging and 522 watts during flowering and I'm pretty sure that a comparable HID would generate more heat than the CFLs.

re: Snow White & More

ok guys, all the input is really helping me out.

stealthgrow, wait until you see them fully grown. luckily my flowers get FAT :)

for now some photos. the very last of the serious 6 flowers :(, my homemade joint ripper (which gives me a good rip), and my windowsill plants which got fed today. the tall basil is 8 weeks old today, the rest of the plants are a couple weeks younger. basil takes forever to grow. I hate the beefsteak tomato stock I have, they are such slow growing finicky plants. the cherry tomato stock grows great.

I won't have more buds until this harvest is complete. I guess im going to be drinking a lot till then lol

re: Snow White & More

Those buds are getting nice and big. Your plants are coming along. :thumb:

I have been gone and missed the debate on the temperature problems. My only suggestion is the heat needs to be sucked out. Preferably from the top. Also a fan blowing air around helps with general health of your plant and air circulation but it will not necessarily lower air temps. It may even just circulate the hot air. So, you have to pull the air out. If that isn't an option then I would try and blow some cool air in.

Hope that helps some... :wood:
