In the videos I've seen of the Afghani men making hash, they were actually setting the patty down on top of an open flame for about 10 seconds or so at a time.

That is the same video I saw. I did use a propane torch set really low and used it to heat up one of the balls I did. I did not hold the heat in any one place very long, only long enough to warm up the material so it was more playable like play dough.
