Small 1st Grow Already In Progress Using LEDs To Flower & T-5s For Veg

Hi OG,

I'm still along for the ride and the ladybird porn. I hope to now follow in your footsteps having just placed my order for a Mars II 400 and 2'3" tent from Mars Hydro. I'll be studying your technique (don't be getting performance anxiety on me now!). 12 CBD seeds arrived this morning so I thought I'd get my skates on. The hope is to plant Christmas Day (my birthday).

Cheers

Max

ps I'm afraid I took your name in vain in the Mars post ;-) and I quote " I've been following OldGrower's first-since-the-eighteen-hundreds-grow" *hides*

Stacked nicely and frosty!!!! Grand job!!
Thanks LA coming from such distinguished member as yourself that is quiet a compliment :high-five:

You got some beautiful looking bud in there OG :thumb:
Thank you Robert, dang two of 420's finest giving me compliments in one day. Hoping to stay humble :circle-of-love:
I wish I was OG. . . .

PEACE
Everyone can grow like me my friend, I was just lucky enough to start out with more resources then the average bear. The 420 community deserves all the credit for my garden, they encouraged me when I was down, they gave me advice and support when I stumbled and most importantly they believed in me and wanted me to succeed. As a community, it is 420's goal for everyone to succeed, not just the lucky few. Have faith brother, it will come.:circle-of-love:

Hey Max, WOW what a compliment!
But before you commit to a set style of growing may I suggest you do what I did. I looked at everyones grow that I could, I have subscribed to tons, and there are so many more I haven't gotten a chance to look into, so I still have more to learn. See what they do that you think is a great idea or a great way of doing something, then make it your own. My style of growing is a combination of so many growers from 420 you would find it hard to believe. Even to the way I try to update my journals and respond to people are all things I have seen others do that I thought was a better way of doing something. Then do not be afraid to try new concepts, even if they do not work for you, try them and see for yourself. Make new friends, and enjoy not only the joys that your garden brings you but the joy that others gardens bring them. And one day, I hope that you too will have someone compliment you with as nice of a compliment as you paid me today.:circle-of-love::bigblush:

Hi OG,

Thanks for the information. I am indeed learning as much as I can before sprouting the first seed. I have no idea when the tent and lights will turn up though. I had a panic the other day trying to figure out air flow configurations. One problem I see is that it's getting very cold here so I don't think over heating will be an issue with LED's. I'm going to get a thermostatic radiator in the room the tent will be in and spend a lot of time juggling air flow and external temps. I'm starting to suspect I'll have low RH% but then I see plants respire a lot of moisture. The geek in me is already planning a Raspberry Pi monitoring system. I suspect I'll get more out of setting it up than I will growing. I admit I have concerns because the powers that be in the UK happily prescribe me medical heroin but frown at using a pain killing herb. Excessive carbon filtering will be going on!

I will indeed Shiggity. I'll be completely open to constructive criticism and pointers. I'm in this for the experience and learning aka fun.

It would be great to have you and OG watching and commenting. I already believe the Mars II 400 in a 2'4" room will give nice light saturation. Ok, first bit of the learning curve and a question for you 'old' hands if I may?.... 400w in a 2.5' square room would give me 64w per sq foot. Is that right? If so it's actually a little high (perhaps?). What watts/sq ft are you guys aiming for?

Actually, the Mars II is a true 200w, not 400w... that gives 32w per sq foot.

Sorry, should I be asking elsewhere and not hijacking OG's thread?

Yes please always be safe not only with electrical but with unwanted guests who may frown on your medications.

.... and you're welcome. You're super modest despite having an obvious flair for growing. And your spider mite breeding programme is exemplary ;-)
My lord I laughed so hard I just sprayed my monitor with coffee. Yes, I must say my breeding techniques for spider mites is bound to become legendary in these parts
Max when you start your grow journal announce it here and we will all come watch with OG.
I agree, in fact as you start setting up your grow area, start your journal, that way if you miss something on say exhausting or air circulation we might be able to catch it for you before it becomes an issue for you down the road.

It is all good Max, we are family at 420. Asking a question is not really highjacking a thread, everyone does that and it is not considered rude at all. I know of no one at 420 who would object to being asked a question, though if you have 20 or 30 separate questions, the polite way to approach it would be to ask them if they mind stepping over to your journal to help you out. I am no expert by any stretch of anyones imagination when i comes to lighting. Though I was under the belief that ideal conditions would be a minimum of 50 watts per square foot. Not saying that 32 would not grow nice buds, just ideally you are looking for 50. Now obviously if you have more then 50 that is a plus in your favor but at some point, there is a maximum and adding more makes no difference, I believe the term is referred to as total light saturation. I believe that the 2 foot by 2 foot area directly under the light will be fine though the areas slightly further away will grow buds just not as dense as the 2x2 area. One cheap way to supplement your lighting is with CFL's The are in-exspensive to purchase and to operate. And that 50 watts per square foot is not mandatory. It just creates denser buds in that 2x2 area beneath the light. You should be fine for now and some day down the road, if you want more light, which eventually you will, we all end up wanting more to spoil the girls, get them when it is not going to be a burden on your finances. Growing is meant to be fun and enjoyable, but if you spend all your spare money on lights and on your electric bill, you will soon find that growing is not as fun and stress relieving as if you stayed within your means.
You will be fine with what you got for your 1st grow trust me :thumb:

A good number to shoot for is 50 true watts per square foot. For example I have three 260 watt LEDs and two 600 hps in a 4x8= 62 watts/sq foot.

I have 325 watt, 140 watt and 440 watts of LEDs for enough for basically 18.1 square feet of space at 50 watts per foot. That is probably why my buds are not as fat as I would like them DOH :thumb: But as you can see from my garden, while the buds may not be as big as I would like, I believe I still did ok for what I had to work with.

I run a marsll 400w in 4 sqft. Actual draw of 200w so I'm bang on 50w per sqft. :cheer:
That explains why your garden is always so amazing:circle-of-love:
Ideally I would be better off stuffing everything into 1/2 of my flower tent but being old lazy and bad eyes I really like having the extra room around the plants for maintenance. I may have to stuff them all into 1 side this next grow though if I want fatter buds.

Thank you for the advice on lighting OG, much appreciated. The tent won't be rammed to start off so I'll keep them under the optimal area.

In my limited experience, the usable area for LEDs is pretty obvious. With HPS, the light gradually drops off, but LEDs are so tightly focused, when you are slightly out of their footprint, you know. There's way more to it than light intensity anywho. Otherwise I'd be growing fire with 75W per foot. :hmmmm: :laughtwo:
