Rex's Hydro Grow: Somango Auto & Super Skunk Auto: Drop In & Learn Or Help With Some Easy Hydroponics

Update time!

So today was a big day for the lil ladies. At 3 days of age they have been transplanted into the 6 inch net cups. Everything went relatively smoothly except one moment of an ill spasm, where I may have damaged the root, oh well, tis what it is.
So, here's a step by step. And some pictures of course!!

So first thing to do is empty the big net cup. Next I gently dump the solo cup with the seedling, then I sprinkle some Great White on the roots. I gently place the end of the tap root at the bottom of the large net cup and begin to slowly fill it with hydroton. Then the big net cups go back in their place. Then they get plastic domes placed over top...though two couldn't be found so i had to improvise.
Next came the reservoir, I added a bit of mega crop (ppm from 72 to 165ppm), and ph'd to 5.8

Little ones are looking good Rex! I hope you have a great weekend! :passitleft:

Thank you, hope you do too!!

Nice delicate work!

It’s all about improvisation! I call that the Dutch Dome ® :cheesygrinsmiley:

Yeah I saw that in your journal, it works!! And it did cross my mind, but I went an even lazier route and used the propagation cover, which then covered the two seedlings perfect .... and then the Mrs as usual saved me this morning by finding my missing two domes.

SS1 (superskunk) & SM3 seedlings are doing great. I think they're bottom feeding right from the get go!:high-five:

1 (SM1) of them is the one who's tap root I damaged, she's being bottle fed from top and bottom of net cup (sprayed).

The other one (SM2) still is just unhappy about putting roots into a new home I think. She'll get over it. She too is being bottle fed.

PPM at 186, nothing done
PH at 6.5, adjusted to 5.6

Hi folks and :welcome: to my 3rd medical grow using Autoflowers. I'll be using a DIY ebb and flow system that was relatively cheap to setup, is automated, & runs from my phone. The environment consists of an insulated grow cabinet that measures 5 feet height, 4 feet in width, and 3 feet in depth. The cabinet is an odd size as it was built to fit an odd space. There is no visible hinges or locks on it, and must be opened via a remote control key fob. And yes, I mounted a 46 inch TV to the door of my cabinet....cause well, why not?
For this grow I'll be using Mega Crop, GH liquid koolbloom, GH CaMg+ if needed, and H202 for sterilization. Cyco PH up/down, and I think that should be it.
Lighting will be a vivosun 400watt MH/HPS.
Temperature is controlled via an Inkbird Wi-Fi controller (can adjust by phone remotely). There is an 8 inch exhaust that eventually gets reduced down to 4 inches. And a 6 inch intake reduced to 4 inches. Air is exchanged via tubes to outside.
Humidity will be controlled by Inkbird humidity controller operating a mini humidifier and dehumidifier (swapped in & out as needed).
A 64 liter tote will act as my reservoir. Sitting directly above it on a DIY stand is two cheap mortar tubs fitted with ebb and flow kits from the Zon. A cheap vivosun water pump acts to flood the mortar tubs with nutrients. Watering is on a cycle that runs for 1 hour floods every 3 hours, this can be overrode anytime by phone for a manual triggered flood. Inside each tub and the reservoir is airstones powered by a cheap vivosun air pump.
On top of each mortar tub is DIY covers made from plywood holding 4x 6 inch Net cups.
Of course I have tds and PH pens to adjust the nutrients (aka nutes). Target PH will be between 5.8 to 6.5 using natural PH drift.

Here is a pic as I'm resetting the cabinet from my last run.

The intake air ducting wraps around the reservoir helping to chill it. There is also a water leak detector on the floor of the cabinet.
The cabinet can also be monitored remotely via a paning camera.

Here is a write up on how I automated my grow. You can read the pros and cons.
How to setup a smart power strip for a grow

This grow will have light defoliation as needed, lots of LST, supercropping, and a scrog net to help. I've used all in the past grows without issues yet.

Beans have been dropped in water. More updates shortly!
Nice setup!! Very trick!! Digging the automation, well planned!
Tagging along :thumb:

is it ok to tag along ? , was hoping someone would start some autos in DWC , i fancy trying it in the summer outside :goodjob:
Of course Nutty! Very happy to have You! I'd love to grow some autos outside.
Though the biggest issue I think, would be temperature management for your res?

not where i live lol , its always cold or raining , be more worried about rain
I've actually been putting some thought into that. Any chance you can make a roof out of screen? A regular "V" roof, where it's made out of screens. It would allow light to pass without issue, and it would divert most of the rain. Anyhow, just pitching a "food for thought possibility". I got to figure out rain and heat management for next year's outdoor veggie garden expansion (gonna make a large NFT).

Cabinet Update!

So, pretty much as I expected, the seedling who's root I damaged due to a spasm has passed away:rip:

And I'm actually a bit relieved. Having 3 plants in there instead will make the space a bit more manageable. I planted 4 just in case something went wrong, "plan for the worst and all your surprises will be good ones".

Day 5 since sprouting
Cabinet temp: 28C
Cabinet RH%: 31%
Root temp: TBA (sensor not hooked up yet)
Previous PPM:186
Current PPM:187
PH: 6.8 adjusted to 5.7

1st week of Autos you don't really need any nutes.

First off, I want to say i hope everyone a Merry Green Christmas! :passitleft:

So...update!

Well, unfortunately I had a bit too much to drink and spent an extra night away from the house. Came home to another dead seedling :rip:. So, now we're down to two. One Super Mango and one Super Skunk. At least the title of the grow journal stays relevant I guess. The harvest goal is now a hopeful 200g dried total. Should be doable.

Onto some good news, a family member has told me that this spring they're going to help me setup a proper sized tent, & gear to be fully self sufficient. Best Christmas gift ever. So far, only the tent has been picked, a gorilla shorty 4x8.

So, back to the current grow. The dead seedling, I'm suspecting it dampened off in order for it to go from healthy looking to shriveled so quickly. I took a 5 gallon jug, put 30ml of H202 (29%) and mixed with water. I then poured it over the hydroton where the seedling was for sterilization.

The two seedlings are feeding at around 200ppm right now. I'll come back and edit the post with pictures in a bit.

Back to regular updates, holidays are over :high-five:

Merry late Christmas
Sounds like you partied down for Christmas, as long as you had a good time that made for a Merry one that counts .
Sorry to hear about the girls.
Nice choice on the tent I’ve got the 5’x5’ gorilla next June it’s seven years old . The main double door zipper at the bottom has a 1/2” tear which has been no problem it has double flap one on the inside and one outside so no light leak . Have a great day.

It was a great time, and totally worth it. I'd be upset about the girls, but knowing what I have coming has given me something to look forward to. Gonna be doing photos, and I want a top of line light for the space, I've been looking at the HLG 650r

I hope you had a Merry Xmas as well and are feeling good!
Your current grow is just amazing!

Merry Christmas to you and the family Rex. I hope you all had a great day yesterday!

Thanks Mr. S!! It was only a few of us, but I think we drank enough to make up for it :blunt:

Hope you and your family had a great one too!
