Recess Is Over - Now To Muck Up The Lesson

Your so right skunkworkz.. thanks bro.. im growing small samples, not expecting or thinking of keeper, I'm looking for the taste and high of yesteryear.. what I'm expecting to find is the taste that has me looking deeper into a strain to keep around...
mate I was reading other night, dude went through 400 plants (doors) to get the keeper he knew was in there.. amazing and awesome stuff, I love that shit.

Here a fun fact; The ever popular "Chemdog D" original P1 clone is simply an incredible Skunk/NL selection. The people who want to cash in on the name have gone to great lengths the past few years to try to obscure the origins with a bunch of smoke & mirrors but to anyone who has been growing seriously for a long time, it's not even up for debate.

They (Legend) still have a 'Canadian' seedbank. Whatever that means. Nice old-school hippy style vibe to the place. Looks appealing - I haven't ordered from them before though.

A good friend of mine recently did a project where he ran well over 100 seeds from a dozen popular breeders under 12,000w HPS looking for keepers. In the final 48 selected mothers (of which I saw samples) there MAY have been ONE plant worth running a second time. It's a shitshoot, but it's a lot of fun.

Did you read that quote I put up from nev regarding nl5x2? It's a classic.. saying how he thought long and hard about releasing it as he thought it would put him out of a job. He shouldn't have worried as everybody was sleeping :rofl:

Ive lost it.. a dude come in and said it was the best smoke he ever had which got that reply from nevil.. be either breeding techniques or ask nevil anything..

Shame paranoia breeed the stink outta Skunk.. should be back though, with legality and can bring those big stinkers back into circulation.. well that's my theory and hope :rofl:..

I missed it. Link?

around 20 years ago I had the pleasure of growing some of Neville's NL5X2 and it is hands down the best strain I have grown to date.

Nevil
When I started all this, I did it with the idea of making myself, in a sense, redundant. There was no precedent and I didn't know what forces would be countered against me or how long my run would last.
Northern Lights, especially NL5, was the cornerstone of the indoor growing industry. By putting NL5x2 out there, I was giving the game away. I thought hard about this and I had to decide on what was best for me or what was best for everyone else. I decided that what was best for everyone would ultimately be best for me.
I needn't have worried. Everyone was asleep.

:rofl: I love reading his shit. Cracks me up..

Why do I get the feeling there is more to Skunkworkz than his username would suggest? (or am I way off base)

I'm a student of the plant, just like everyone else here, my friend. Nobody special, I've just been at it a long friggin' time, and I have a good memory for details-which the seeming onset of senility hasn't robbed me of, so far. And I do so love a good solid discussion on old school genes like this, (preferably uninterrupted with "CAN I GROW TEN, 4' PLANTS UNDER TWO 15w CFLs?" which this thread, unlike so many, happily lacks.) . I've collected a fair amount of genetics trivia over the years, every once in a while it's fun to jog my memory and see what clatters to the floor. .

What I'd like to see on 420, is an "Advanced/Expert Growers" forum, with the notation: "If you don't know what you're doing, don't post, simply shut the fsck up & read-you might learn something." It'd go a hella long way to eliminating the off topic "HOLY CRAP LOOK AT MY PLANT ISSUE PLEASE HELP OH MY GAWWWWD!" posts that seem to proliferate threads in this place, and would better foster serious discussions between people that actually know what the fuck they're doing. This thread is absolutely enjoyable & if there were a lot more like this it'd be fan-friggin-tastic .

To many props to nevil, to be who you thought (if I'm thinking of the same person)

That'd be brilliant mate.. talk about actual strains and not plants that are named after them to get your dollars..

In a sweeping generalization, I'd say the vast majority of "what's hot" right now, hybrid-wise, in cannabis, is pretty much shite. And shouldn't be re-hybridized. Let me draw you a picture as an example:
We'll look at Gorilla Glue #4.
By what is alleged, GG#4 is Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel.
Let's for the sake of argument posit that Chem's Sister is an NL/Skunk 1 selection.
Chocolate Diesel is Sour Diesel/Thai
And
Sour Dubb is BogBubble (Bubblegum) x Sour D.

So, we have:
NL
SKUNK
SOUR D
THAI
BUBBLEGUM

Food for thought: The above is about an eight way cross with thousands & thousands of recombinant possibilities.

Onward.

Okay, so, in a lottery win situation, (so says the Internet, I disagree) Josey had an unstable plant reverse (not a good thing) & a few seeds popped up, one of which is now known as "GG4." It's good smoke, but not earth shattering, and it likes to reverse under minor stress. (Source: I've run the clone before.) Reversal under minor stress labels a plant a CULL, and usually one moves on. But this plant, some say, is a "unicorn." A unicorn is a mythical plant that shits rainbows & makes Millennials drop their vapes in excitement-and it looks really good when heavily filtered on Instagram, I'm told. So, the intrepid growers enter it in a High Times Cannabis Cup, which, if you're willing to drop lots of money into HT's pockets, you'll get a trophy. And they got a . (Jesus wept.)
Now the seed businesses gets wind of this mythical beast, and it's time to cash in on the name. Who gives a shit that the plant is derived from a genetic weakness? There's CASH to be made boys! And almost instantly there's GG4 autos, (GG X Hemp, lol nice one!) GG fems, and even funnier, GG4 m/f seeds without an actual GG4 male in existence. Funny. As. Fuck. Breeding with GG4 is like fucking together retarded cousins and selling the progeny as purebreds. Not to mention that the GG4 clone wasn't nearly widespread enough for even a small percentage of the people who claimed to have it, to actually have it. It was especially amusing to see the European seed hacks pump out "GG4" crosses, fems & autos when there was absolutely no fucking way they had the genetics. But they did. And people bought that utter shite. Oops.
The above was just a quick rip not through "modern "hot" genetics suck", as it first appears, it's really ALL about why classic, cornerstone genetics like Skunk, NL, and Haze are really more important to growers than ever.
