Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Interesting points on drying. I do find it funny how they talk about cure time. I don't know anyone that waits for a cure before trying and smoking. There area lot of us that have plants that are gone before cure time LOL.

I do keep a eye on plants as I harvest them. The better phenos of each strain will get cure time. Lesser plants and phenos can be smoked when they are dry enough. As much as I like to see myself as a connoisseur I guess I am not. LMAO.

In the end if it is not there a cure cannot improve it. Mostly a good cure time will help define the terpene profile. From my experience good weed tastes good from the start.

Exactly what I've noticed bro, the Blue Collar has the same flavor as it did freshly dried, but much more pronounced and a hell of alot smoother! This last run really opened my eyes to how much genetics play a role in the end product. No more bag seed for this guy!!!

Here is one of the last Basic 99. Interesting situation with it. I thought is was done tell I got all the fan leaves off. Still more growth than I would like to see going on. On the chance that the lower buds will bulk up I put it back into mature a little longer. I have heard about trimming fan leaves a few days before harvest so I know this won't hurt them. I rarely do it but it in this situation I am willing to try it. My bad for not checking the inner buds better.

Going to take another day off today from trimming. Mostly because of time I am a busy man LMAO. More plants will be finished tomorrow so back to trimming I will go. Purps plants are finishing up and the Tangilope are not far behind them. The only confusion is with the R.K.S. Not sure how long they will take. It has been packing on weight since all the hairs have turned red. Trichomes have been cloudy from the start. The good thing is they are packing on weight. I thought this strain was a major fail at first. Still not going to produce a lot. It sure looks good. Though looks do nothing. It could be covered in trichomes and still suck. It is all about what is inside those trichomes.

Figuring out it is all about genetics is a good thing and a bad thing. Saves you from growing a lot of crap but it sure does add to the stress of have enough genetics to last. Knowing and having are 2 different things.

That is what started my obsession with stockpiling genetics. That and dreams of being a master breeder someday lol. Problems started showing up when I found I didn't want to grow the older genetics anymore. Newer is better in lots of situations. Marijuana strains is one of those things where this thinking is solid. Think is great phenos can be found anywhere.

Now that I have a good idea of what I like and seeds to cover me in those areas. I will be able to go back and take a look at the older genetics. Master Kush, White Widow and a few others will get there chance once again. I do believe there is some interesting possibilities in mixing the old with the new.

I did once and still have the damn mat LOL. I have not used it since the first time. It sure doesn't hurt if you need it. They have been around for years so they have to work. Mostly I don't use it is because I don't think I need it. Even in (Cool) not cold temps my seeds pop fine.

One issue I know of with heat mats. This is info from my mentor. I follow almost all of his advise as he knows more about growing than most. He told me there are issues with sprouts trying to grow the wrong way. They grow towards the warmth which in the case of heat mats would be down. A lot matters what type of light you are running. If your light is warming the top of the soil the sprouts know which way to go.

I don't know how a light that does not produce much heat would work with a heat mat. With cooler soil and HID lights my plants know which way to grow LOL.

I never thought about it like that man your mentor is a smart feller. Thanks for that info, no heat mat for this guy!!

Not problem, always willing to give advice even when it is wrong LMAO. Everything is situation when growing. What works for one won't necessarily work for others. I am sure there are times when mats are needed. What temps a person is dealing with has a lot to do with it. After they pop throw the soil a little warmth may be helpful. Warm soil is a lot more helpful early than late.

I don't remember where my mat is but if I ever need one I have it. My luck when I need it I won't be able to find it tell I order a new one.

Maybe I'll build a box of some sort and use the mat to warm up the overall temp inside of it. I've already paid for it. So my curiosity needs to be met. Lol. Your mentors opinion makes perfect sense though. I need to get my game tightened up. Lol. I popped 2 9 lb hammer's, one is above ground. Popped 2 24 k and none above ground. After a week I searched for a 24 k and it's got a root but not coming up to the surface

Do you have a humidity dome on them? I always put a clear baggie or cup over mine to keep the humidity up, and they normally pop within a day or 2. It could just be weak seeds. I got lucky and met someone who has killer genetics. Hope they sprout for you brother!!

Hope all goes well with the 24 K Dankman.

Try as I might to avoid it I am now swamped. Going to be trimming a couple plants a day. All while trying to find time to re-pot the next grow to their final pots. I am not going to get the amount of veg time I want. This is a different type of grow. I am hoping they will grow faster with no topping. Between super cropping and bending I have most the plants spread out fairly well. After repot I should get another 2 weeks of veg time for them to make themselves at home in the new pots.

I have tried to just super crop a grow with short plants before and it did ok. Didn't produce much but the plants did well. By adding the bending to some of the strains I am getting lots of branches reaching for the top of the canopy. Maybe they will do better this way. Looks good so far. Plus with more feeding this time I may add bulk that way.

Re-pot today. Lots to do so I can't stay here and bullshit all day LOL. Going to be a interesting day. The way I have trained some of these plants is going to make it difficult to re-pot. Some are longer than they are tall. Normally I don't do any training at this stage. They may have been topped but that is about it.

Plant shape is going to affect how the plants are spread out. A few plants are only super cropped so their footprint will be a little smaller. I hope with the mix I can find the right places for everything.

What makes today busier than normal. I am going to have to move all the plants out of the little tent. Raise the light change over all the timers and then I can move the last of the flowering plants in There are going to be 9 in there which is tight fit at first. Everything is real close so they won't be cramped for very long. After that I can re-pot and move all the plants to veg in the 60 x 60 tent

Sounds like were on a similar mission today. I have to up-pop a couple of my large veg girls into their final pot and raise the lights up. The huge difference is I only have 1/4 of the plants you have lol.
Your a busy man between trimcation and up potting. Hope you have a good one brother!!
