Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

How do you like growing in Hempy Rad? I am curious as to how someone who grows in soil compares it and the smoke to soil grown buds.

I might have an answer to that question in 4-5 months :)

The growing part I'm sure I'll love, because when I did water only in soil I adored the simplicity - and hempy is lighter. And I don't have to think about water much - I'm dumping the old reservoirs and refilling from the top once every 3 days.

Perlite is lighter than soil.

The no transplant method I started seems to be going fairly well. I love the uniformity. Every pot is the same size so the lights stay in one position most of the time.

One big variable is fertilizer. Did I under fertilize? If I run into a nutrient deficiency, I don't have experience diagnosing defieciencies or nutes to clear up the issue.

The other big issue is quality - the proof is in the smoking. My family has refined taste buds :) One can taste the difference between smoking buds buds stored in a steel food container and a glass container - even with dirty bong water I wouldn't smoke through.

I find the technique extremely interesting but as a soil enthusiast, I don't know if I could ever see leaving it....though I suppose if weight was an issue I could explore hempy or aeroponics (brother's favorite method) or even DWC, but man I just love dirt and the simplistic approach of growing in it.

I love dirt. I love the feel of mixing soil. I dug nd moved AT LEAST 5,000 gallons of soil in my yard this year. Born in the Chinese year of the dog, I'm a digging dog.

This hempy switch is not a religous epiphany or conversion to a cult, this is just a (hopefully) intelligent response to the issue that I don't have the space or the time to set up a space to keep the soil not in use alive, healthy and cooking in a cold basement. I plant to switch back to soil in the spring/summer.

For the time I am growing in hempy, it promises to be simple. Right now that is very attractive :)

P.S. I reached 10,000 posts today !

I think Sweet Sue is at like 30,000 posts, so a third of the way :laughtwo: Congrats on 10k posts!

The hempy switch sounds like a reasonable one given the circumstances. I too have issues reading deficiencies and thus the kit works well for me. I keep my soil on a sheet of insulation next to my tent and hope its stays warm/cool enough throughout the year. It is tough though since I have between 4-6 totes going at a time :laughtwo:

Congrats on the 10k rad and great job on that carnival i just recently put one of my devils carnival that were both in hempy well i put one into soil just in case I dnt do so well with the hempy grow I dnt wana lose these genetics lol but yea great job on the harvest lookn mighty tastey there i jus brought dwn one of my kali mist outdoor girls just now actually I'm in the middle of the harvest now takn a smoke break answern some posts then guna start the bud wash

10k! That's a lot of posts. You're hitting SweetSue territory there.

Congrats at 10k Rad, thats a lot!!

Considering I've been here longer than sweetsue - not so much. Van Stank looks on track to reach 10,000 in his second year - like SweetSue :)

Rock on! Rad. Ten K, good on ya.

I love the soil. But have interest in all types. I Wanna try it too. If I could figure a small automatic back up water system in case I get stuck away from the grow like I do for a week or two at a time. Not sure I feel like planing ahead that much. I am being a lazy bones.

4 inches of perlite in a tray (the size of your grow area floor) under your pots filled with water can give you 10-15 more days between watering. - It's inexpensive!

Won't help with a hempy grow.

P.s. I have a 5" deep plastic tray about the right size that came from a big box store sold for mixing cement.
I have a 2" deep tray from a farm supply store sold for lining the bottom of a rabbit hutch.

Kiddy pools would be great! (too bad they are round)

I did a bit of harvesting and bud washing today too. Here they are after trimming the fan leaves.

AMS Borderliner XTRM

These are the girls that went into flower under the veg lights when the bulbs burned out . Probably 1.5 oz for the both of them. Good frostiness.

I lost the Borderliner genetics, but the AK47 (one of my favorites) cutting is finally putting out roots (after 45 days in the cloner bucket - I dislike reveg clones)

Only 4 plants in the flowr area - another small flower in veg girl expected ready to harvest in a week or so.

Nice harvest Rad. I was looking at those AK47 Xtrms the other day. Almost pulled the trigger but figured I would wait a while.

I purchased AK47 XTRM, Borderliner XTRM and White Widow XTRM as the "Cup Winners Feminized" seeds packet from AMS about 2.5 years ago (for about 1/2 what AMS sells them for today.)

I really like the AK47 XTRM and Borderliner XTRM and have been running them since. The White Widow XTRM wasn't as good as the first White Widow (non-fem) seed from AMS - and AMS is probably not the best White Widow out there. From what I read, the original White Widow/Black Widow required a pheno hunt of up to 20 seeds to find the 'good' phenotype - I don't have the space and patience for that kind of pheno hunting.

I'm not a dedicated strain hunter. Out of about 12 strains I have grown to harvest, my current top picks (in order) are: MoC Carnival, AMS AK47 XTRM, Delicatessen Lilly, and HSO Amherst Sour Diesel.

I'm hoping Ace Guawi and Haze x Kali China (in Flower), UltraDawg (veg), and Dark Devil Auto(coming soon) make it into my top strains list.

If I could grow anything out there based on smoke reports it would be Devil's Tit.

Some of those C99 and Colombian Gold '72 hybrids sound attractive too - but I only have space for so many strains (I clone them over and over.) and I am not ready to drop a good strain until a better one pushes it to the side. I won't 'pull the trigger' on a seed until I know I'm going to plant it. I'll never accept another clone without a long quarantine period.
