Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

I've wondered about that myself quite a bit. Some say that a tiny light leak wreaks havoc. Then I think about the moon, lightning storms, stars, porch lights, etc. I just play it safe because maybe there's something different about an indoor grow that makes them less tolerant than outdoors.

I lied a little. I never covered up the little LED light on the heater, It's hard to see from an angle anyway.

I did what I consider the impotant light check "I sat in a dark room and verified that the flower area heater does not glow when it is heating."

When I go into the dark room surrounding my grow, after lights out, there are slim cracks around the door to the flower area that could let in the twice reflected 54W CFL from the room next door. Those same cracks could let in the once reflected light from a bare 23W CFL in the ceiling.

In my first flower room, those lights leaks were double sealed. After several months I found myself taknig flash pictures in the first hour or two after lights out. This time is also the worst time I come near the grow room now. I am a lot less concerned about light leaks than I used to be.

I wear an LED headlamp and take flash photos all the time. LIght leaks are over-rated.

I have a couple of strains that will not tolerate any light leak at all; they shoot out nanners then when I seal the tiny leak; back to normal. Other strains I have are not as sensitive.

Good to know.

There have been creditable reports of branches that 'hermie' just in a little patch near a light leak, but obviously this doesn't happen all the time. Have you noticed a pattern as to which of your strains are intolerant of light leaks?

Have to say that I have never been overly concerned. I pull them out of the dark to play with, and Ive never seen a nanner. I figure as long as I keep it dim and they are out for only a bit, that the light is the same as moonlight....Ive never grown a strain to date that was bred so far from its roots that a brief bit of light caused issues,

I haven't seen a nanner either, but I've only grown 7 strains and a few unclassified 'breeder seeds' to maturity. Except for the time the whole room polinated, I've only had 5 ? seeds out of 40 ? plants harvested.

This grow has my first pure sativa seedling. I've yet to try an autoflower or a high CBD seed. There are a whole lot of strains out there that I've never even heard of  LLHmaryjane doesn't post a lot, but seems to have been around the block and played around with organics and such. I trust LLH is speaking from experience and curiousity.

I wasnt doubting at all...it was more of a ...'havent seen that yet, not sure if Id invest the time into such a fussy strain' comment :)

Im not sure if Im at Rifleman's level of lazy grower yet, but Im damn close :)

Point taken on the 'investing the time in a fussy strain' comment. I just didn't want to make it seem like anyone was being disrespected here. :peacetwo:

I used to be a 5 minutes a day grower- but I'm starting to see the value in an even canopy before flower. On a seedling that's only about 5 minutes a week, but on a clone, I've never come up with a good training strategy. Plus this whole dunk watering takes about 8 minutes per thirsty plant. Sure I'm playing sudoku and solitaire while listening to tunes, but this still adds a lot of time to my lazy growing.

I come here to :420: to play social media, not think about becoming a dedicated grower :)

Borderliner and Amherst Sour Diesel move into flower

Borderliner. Her canopy has been pretty even at 12" high and 20-22" wide for a couple of days.

20170213_141942.jpg

Her leaves were demanding more light - So I decided to move her to the flower area

20170213_142103-1.jpg

Amherst Sour Diesel . 13" high with an irregular canopy from 14-20" wide with an average of 16"

20170213_144722.jpg

A bit scraggly but quite a few bud sites, so I put her into flower too.

20170213_144747-1.jpg

I did a top dress of Recharge and worm castings for Borderliner, then watered in.

20170213_152159-2.jpg

Amherst Sour Diesel also got a top dress, watered in with Growth Energy.

20170213_152140-1.jpg

The Taoist monks did a really good job moving the top dress into place with mystical force.

20170213_152207-1.jpg

Such a good job that I released the Lego construction crew - leaving only the camera girl to watch for trouble.

20170213_152229.jpg

The flower area now has 3 girls. The AK47 is so much taller that I turned on the 2nd light for the 2 new girls.

20170213_151225.jpg

3x5 file cards tell me which girl is located where and her watering and feeding history.

20170213_151148.jpg

p.s. I was supposed to do a brix foliar today, but after a morning moving a victorian buffet and 1930s Chicago gangster dresser/sideboard - I can wait for tomorrow. Mondays are supposed to be my day off :)

Must be a challenge keeping track of your days off in retirement. :laughtwo: I guess you need note cards for that too!

Actually I really need to do something more like that for my plants. I've tried to get everyone on same schedule, but if I do a pheno hunt this spring I think I could actually keep up with index cards.

I like the irregular shape of ASD. Looks like indoor landscaping with space to cradle a variegated mint or purple basil. Congrats on the flip!

Looking Rad, Rad! I have those same hangars (the hardware) on my hid lights and I hated how they were so opened so I took the vise grips to them and closed them up leaving very little chance they would slip off the lights, probably a little paranoid of me, ha! I also like the index card set up you have.

I've had these lights for 3 years now. Banged my head and elbows quite a few times. :)
The glass hasn't broken and the hangers haven't come loose.

Nice grow! I believe I'll follow along!

Peace and Blessings...

Thanks and welcome.

If you are at all interesting in growing your own, a :420: journal is a great way to work out your questions and share your success stories :)
You can also talk about something you enjoy without social punishment

There's always interesting stuff going on in your garden, Rad!

I tried to grow 4 plants in one batch and 4 plants in another batch - but somehow I prefer the ebb and flow of plants traveling towards harvest on a river of green life. It does keep it interesting :)

I take 4 snapshots for every one I post - There are a lot of blurry and boring photos that don't get uploaded :)

Enjoy your daily life folks. Special events are nice - but I'm having a good day with my wife just cleaning out the clutter in the dining room. I like a loving home :)

Veg area update

Ace Mix (51 days) was ready for her first nutes (bottom watered 1ml GE+0.1ml Tea.)

20170214_165016-1.jpg

She has 4 good tops started - lower leaf yellowing made me think she was getting hungry.

20170214_164948-1.jpg

I've been bending down Ace Mix's top 2 tops to the level of the lower 2 tops. This should keep them flexible until I tie them down.

20170214_165012-1.jpg

Ace Lily (51 days) was trying to grow as a lollipop - I topped about 3 inches and gave her the same nutes as Ace Mix.

20170214_164058.jpg

The branches on the lowest 3 nodes were barely trying to grow.

20170214_164307-1.jpg

I tied down AK47 clone to force lower growth.

20170214_164826-1.jpg

Tangerine Widow (22 days) is alive but hasn't hit her growth spurt.

20170214_170540-1.jpg

T. Widow is cute, but not more than 2" across.

20170214_170529-1.jpg

Hawaiian Skunk (15 days) has been battered with a lot of elbow shots. She's put on weight in the last 2 days :)

20170214_170438-1.jpg

Temps in Flower reached 89 today. I'm trying to dial that back to a max of 85.

20170214_163149-1.jpg

I have one more 100+ day girl in Veg, but she didn't need soaking and I forgot to take her picture :)

Great emphasis on the environment, Radogast. It will pay off more than anything else.

There is some leaway with this, it seems as I have several glowing lights like that in my flower room and haven't had hermi issues due to them. They are much more sensitive inside, as the plants don't get far red spectrum light like they would outside at sunset. It puts them into sleep mode much quicker than what we use to grow inside.
