I've wondered about that myself quite a bit. Some say that a tiny light leak wreaks havoc. Then I think about the moon, lightning storms, stars, porch lights, etc. I just play it safe because maybe there's something different about an indoor grow that makes them less tolerant than outdoors.
I lied a little. I never covered up the little LED light on the heater, It's hard to see from an angle anyway.
I did what I consider the impotant light check "I sat in a dark room and verified that the flower area heater does not glow when it is heating."
When I go into the dark room surrounding my grow, after lights out, there are slim cracks around the door to the flower area that could let in the twice reflected 54W CFL from the room next door. Those same cracks could let in the once reflected light from a bare 23W CFL in the ceiling.
In my first flower room, those lights leaks were double sealed. After several months I found myself taknig flash pictures in the first hour or two after lights out. This time is also the worst time I come near the grow room now. I am a lot less concerned about light leaks than I used to be.
