Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

I would snip a fan leaf from the top node...should slow it enough for the 3rd node to catch up...then I would top again when those 4 tips were established.

just what Id do...you have more than a little more experience than I do so I just offer this out to add to your gut feeling. If your soul likes green things, trust your gut :) :peacetwo:

For some reason, I've rarely topped twice in a row.
It seems like 4 nearly equal branches would be a good idea :)

It depends on how long you plan on vegging, the strain, and the training you want to do. If you want to flower sooner than later, I'd get rid of them, if you plan on vegging a few weeks you can train them to the canopy and clip nodes below.

I'm probably going to veg on the long side, but I'd like to stay under 2 feet wide.
I think an expanding cone of branches, topping a 2nd or 3rd time in consecutive nodes would work.

I've decided on working with the top 2 nodes of branches to form a canopy.

Thanks to you both for the ideas !

Lovely bushes Rad, I'm entertained and pleased at the same time, hmmm. Thank you for sharing, you are doing great, cheers! :thanks:  :Namaste:

I see how Doc Bud's system will really help the girls grow buds. This is better than I did on my own. Now I need to get better at following the system.

It seems I can't get away from perpetual style growing, and I have more plants in stream than I have soil. so I've placed orders for more soil ingredients and another 'kit.' UPS delivered my 60lb 3.8 cu ft bag of ProMix HP w/mycos as just that, a bag of Pro-Mix with a mailing label. They left it sitting on the front porch on the welcome mat. Pro-Mix on Ground Hog Day. Nothing stealthy about that.

I swapped out my temporary 15 AMP power outlet in the flower area with a hospital grade 20 AMP outlet. I also rotated the heater to point more toward the wall than the plants and added perlite to the flood tray on the floor so the lights won't grow algae in the water. My door is just a panel held in position by toggles, but I like the way it works. For now, I'm done setting up the flower area.

I saw my first flying gnat in veg yesterday - just a glimpse of something small. I also saw one of my lady bugs on patrol :)

Everything is coming together nicely Rad. Your plants look happy.

I went back and read through this thread. There is a lot of talent subscribed.

I copied about half a dozen posts over to ms word. It will be nice to get a feel for the routine and get some questions answered before I start a Kit grow.

The first half of a Kit was mixed on January 20th and the second half around the 27th. I probably will cook the first half until the first of March because the average temp where it is stored is a little low. You should have a plant close to chop by then.

Maybe I could audit the grow.

Here is an idea for your flower door. I should have added another picture. When it is down, there is about six inches of bubble on the floor to lay a 2X4 on. I have the room over pressured and the Velcro holds well. With two strips it is very light tight. Without price shopping, the total cost was under fifty dollars, probably closer to forty.

I have been using this one for close to two years now and it is holding up very well with no wear showing yet. A small amount of duct tape should keep it working for years.

The idea was from the internet. It has been too long to remember who to give credit to.

Nice show BTW,
Best

That roll-up door is a good solution.

i get a small crack of light spilling out of the veg and flower areas, but they spill into a dark room. The room swallow the escaped light, There isn't much chance of a light spill unless I walk into the dark room during lights out. I don't do that.

If I end up spending much time in there, I will add a latch to the inside of the flower area door - keeping it closed will seal in the temp and RH.

If the door becomes awkward to use, I will definitely consider your roll-up solution. It's space saving and logical :)

Big doings at Chez Rhosgobel

Today was a busy day in the garden. It was a Brix foliar day. Over half the plants were ready for watering of one mixture or another.
Lily and Ace mix are big enough to want a little more nutrition so I gave them Brix foliar and 1/4 transplant+tea watering (I was doing 1/4 transplant for Borderliner anyway.)

I looked at the roots of the AK47 clones. The top-growth clone showed nothing, but the lanky lower-growth clone had roots as good as they will ever get.

20170206_133455-1.jpg

I made a deep hole, dusted her with Roots!, and tucked in the soil.

20170206_133539-1.jpg

AK47 lower clone. I wanted to wait before planting, but I'm trying to do things when the plants are ready. Later on, I may choose AK47 top clone to flower instead.

Early veg : Back Row(L to R) Lily, AK47 clone, Ace mix : Front Row(L to R) Tangerine Widow, Hawaiian Skunk

Late Veg : Bubba's Gift (Back left), Borderliner (Back Right), Amherst Sour Diesel (Front)

The single flower girl, AK47, has put on about 9 inches of stretch.

AK47 is now showing her bud sites.

I weighed my bag of Doc Bud's Re-charge and divided into 6 equal parts

20170206_144256-1.jpg

Worm castings and Recharge were mixed for a top dressing.

20170206_143645-1.jpg

With the soil settling, the roots were exposed. They really needed a top dressing.

All this soil work was a big job. Some workers showed up to help.

Borderliner

Borderliner was ready to be watered yesterday (her 10gal pot had been dry for 2 days), but I was so busy with other things that I let her wait for today. I did a bottom water in 1/4 transwater. She soaked up about 6 gallons and dripped back out about 3 gallons.

Borderliner is 14" tall with a 22x14" canopy. If she were 22" tall with a 14x14" canopy, I would be putting her into flower, so I am wondering if it is almost time. The canopy seems to be a good size. If there is a 'perfect time' to go into flower, it might be when the roots have filled the pot. It's a bit of a guessing game.

Do you think this girl needs more veg time?

I'm thinking I should wait for some of the small branches to grow another 1-3" to reach the top of the canopy. After that she is probably ready. Sound OK?

Temp & RH - Flower temp 66-81F, RH 47-61% - Veg temp 73-78F, RH 58-61%

I sat in a dark room and verified that the flower area heater does not glow when it is heating.

A personal observation today reminded me of you Rado.

With the current freeze and snow, my flower room has been getting under 60° in the dark at times. Noticeably less moisture has been take up by the plants through the soil the last few days as well. I turned up the single heater I've been using and added another today.

Man looking great rad :goodjob: i cant wait till this spring so i can get under my house n put up sum wireing so i can use more power in my grow room cause rite nw im at max power and if i add any mre i start blowing fuses but once i can use more power and add more lights i hope to make my grow room bigger and get a bunch of girls lookn like this or atleast close to lookn as healthy as urs :cheertwo: u sure no what ur doin :bravo:

I'd give Borderliner another week at least, Rado. In that 10 gallon, she deserves more mass. :cheesygrinsmiley:

But I'd keep those leaders tied below the inside canopy. If you let them lead in height at all, the inside won't catch up - the plant knows which tip is highest - gotta keep 'em lower, especially at this stage. Take a week to see how it responds and go from there.

LOL I don't know what I'm doing. That's pretty much why I am journaling so much :)

I've grown for a couple of years, but the plants yield and health have ranged from pretty good to pretty s*h*i*tty.

THIS GROW I am, as much as I can, following the advice of Doc Bud, Graytail, KingstonRabbit, Dr.....I better stop now because if life is like the accademy awards I'll forget someone who has been of invaluable aid and piss them and their loved ones off.

This grow, though not reflective of the best possible results, is the best grow I have done because A) I am following a proven system (Doc Bud's Hi-Brix kit), B) I am getting sterling advice here on my thread by folks who know and use that system, and C) I am finally learning about and acting upon creating stable temperatures and humidity.

Getting temp and humidity into good ranges, and regular foliar feedings are really paying off. My old cheat sheat for Temps went something like 55-85F and some equaliy wide RH ranges. Heating my girls at night has made a big difference in how fast they grow. Good nutrition is obviously helping - and I've got a lot to learn, even just in how to use the prepackaged nutrients supplied by Doc Bud.

Thanks all for following this grow. I am very grateful for the excellent advice and encouragement. You are the best !

Thanks for sorting this out.

My old standard would have been to look at the height and the mass of the green to decide when to flip. By my old standard, I would grow for 8 more inches, then flip.

I'll focus on tying down the ends, maybe even hooking them back below and beside the central canopy to bring out the energy of the center.
If I should also let the girl get 8" taller. Tell me that too :)
I'm not so much in a hurry to harvest, as trying to get a good harvest without seriously slowing down the energy of the girl.
In human terms, I don't want a little14 year old girl, but I want a 22 year old young woman because she has more life energy than a bigger 50 year old woman :)

I suppose I could have found a less sexist analogy - maybe something to do with boats or cars - too late now

8 inches is right in my range, too. I like chubby bushes so I want to let them fill out. Typically I want tops, like 10-15 of them, so that takes some vegging time so I have to fight height. I found that most plants won't stretch more than double when they've been trained into multiple tops. For me, that leaves a fully bloomed canopy about 40 inches off the soil before I run out of headroom. So when I get to 20 inches in veg, I start to get nervous.

(Just as an aside, I've begun admitting to every implied insult tossed my way and immediately want to know why the same doesn't apply to the accuser. My patience has worn too thin, and now I want to have some fun, so ... :cheesygrinsmiley: ... there are an awful lot of ists and phobes out there that pretend that accusing others solves their own problem. KnowwhatImean?:;):)

I see folks sweat small lights in their grow areas frequently.
I've never worried about such things. When one considers the lumens that occupy the normal night time world, one quickly concludes that a little red light posses little threat.

2cents

I've wondered about that myself quite a bit. Some say that a tiny light leak wreaks havoc. Then I think about the moon, lightning storms, stars, porch lights, etc. I just play it safe because maybe there's something different about an indoor grow that makes them less tolerant than outdoors.
