Radogast 2 - Return of the Clones

Watered tonight. Plain water only.
One clone was yellowing on the edges of 4 leaves. Another clone was crispy brown on the edges of 2 leaves.
I had given 1/2 strength nutes, followed by 2/3 strength nutes in the last two waterings. Too much.
Plain water until October.

In the forest, I never see nute burn. Yet there are hot spots where deer, squirrels and bats leave feces and guano.
The difference is nutes suspended in water, I guess.
If I have a fish tank and pump in water with fish poo, will it be more like the forest, or more like bottled nutes? :hmmmm::rollingeyes::hmmmm:

I started running strictly organcs a couple months ago.
I feel like this is what they would get in their eutopia, itsd lots of piss shit and bark.
Exactly what they would get in the forest.

I will advocate for running organics
I haven't harvested yet but they are growing as good, if not better than when I ran salts.

Yaaaa forest!!

My maple forest has been dropping 2 & 3 finger width branches 8-12ft long this week. Shall I go get one and throw it on top of my grow?

Ok. I understood all the words you posted, and I am generally happy with natural farming methods outside.
Growing indoors with purchased soil and purchased nutes seems so artificial that organic in a bottle doesn'tiseem to make much difference.
Maybe if I made my own compost tea... except I don't even believe in compost piles outdoors. Sigh.

Temperature and humidity are stable and boring right now :)

I wish I had some boring right now lol

The nutrient suspended in the fish tank water will be readily absorb able with nitrate, nitrites and ammonia broken down by the nitrosomonas bacteria in the Nitrogen cycle in the process of nitrification.

Thanks!! KingJohnC.

I did a little more research today about water/fish/plant ratios today.
I'll start out with kitchen herbs, but I do believe I will be adding fish to my garden room :)
Ebb & flow with lava rock in a single 20x30" bed seems like a good size to get my feet wet!

See your point of view Rad, but indoor organics can go beyond organic liquid nutrients. I mix soil, let it compost, then use it indoors. In 7th wk. since germination on current indoor grow I fed plants for the 1st time yesterday. And that was just a bit of fish fertilizer & kelp. Ongoing microbe inoculations, a little kelp like grimm says & occasional tea up to now. If you want the very best flavor, then give it some consideration. I couldn't possibly see myself returning to non-organic growing (unless I go commercial, which I won't).

I do believe we are in philosophical agreement, Brightlight.

My outbursts are driven by the tensions between my sophomoric understanding of Permaculture theory and my outdoor gardening disappointment my first year away from the city. Seems plants need a lot more sunshine than my brain assumed fell on the meadow. NOT THAT I am unique in my farming ignorance. We have a local museum dedicated to intelligentsia and poets who tried to farm without animals before tractors were invented in order to lead a pure vegan lifestyle - they lasted less than six months :)

But hey, I'm actually learning. Thanks for putting up with my ignorance.

Hey Rad...didn't think we disagreed at all? For a guy who kicked serious a** in his 1st grow, you really know more about growing than you're taking credit for. Just wanted to give you a little info to ponder in case you ever wish to lean over to the organic side. I enjoy junk food but grow organically. I had a vegan gf who drove me nuts....& away. Too much preaching about it & sly verbal digs when I enjoyed some pork BBQ. I like beautiful tasty pot & found organics works best for me toward that end. Are you considering aquaponics...sort of sounds like you are?

I put up an earthen dam and created a pond this summer with an eye towards floating raft vegetables next year.
So yes, aquaponics is a goal.

This winter I am looking towards a small ebb and flow system in the basement.
I was sizing things out and think I'll start with a simple 15-20 gallon reservoir with fish feeding a 20x30" tray.
70 gph + continuous flow water pump split between recirculation and plant tray, air pump in reservoir, goldfish, bell siphon in tray.
Single tray of lava rock? planted with lettuce, peppers, herbs, seedlings.

That's my plan today. Suggestions accepted. Plan subject to change.

Nice plan !!

I too was thinking of dabbling, but I know myself.... I won't dabble cheaply, I'll end up going ALL IN !! ( $$$$).

Can u just catch some catfish or carp and use those?

For the starter fish I am going to catch pet shop carp (goldfish) or maybe black mollys.

For the resident fish I want either channel catfish or tilapia as they are both strong growers who will poop a lot within 6-8 months.
A small system like this can only support 2 channel catfish.

Tilapia is the aquaculture favorite fish. It is one of the world's most farmed fish because they can be filet sized in 3-4 months.
My system can hold 4-6 tilapia, which is a big enough number to harvest for food :) plus they grow fast.

I will talk to the pet store man about this. He has dozens of fish . He's probably busy with harvest like the outdoor growers on this board :)

I checked out Perfect Gardens before. Nice stuff.

AquaBundance Tote Aquaponics System 1 Bed $795 + shipping for 200 gallons of fish tank plus 12 sq ft of grow.
- looks pretty good, but it's about 10 times the tank size I wanted to start with :) plus that tank could support over 3x the grow bed area provided, practically begging you to spend more money on expansion.
- and you know, once you're paying to ship a pallet, you might as well spend $2000 more on the expansion and consolidate shipping costs!
