Hydric Stress

Another interesting study, published by the American Society for Horticultural Science, has shown that the application of drought can increase the amount of cannabinoids in cannabis plants. Although it does not indicate specifically about trichome production, the introduction of this technique can boost THC, which may be an indication for some extra resin growth (as a result of the stress).

Whether this works depends on the species of cannabis and its ability to handle drought. In the study, the plants in the test group were without water for 11 days after the start of week 7 in flowering (water potential 1.5MPa = drought stress threshold, plant wilting). After feeding again and finishing their cycles, yields showed a 50% increase in THC.

Holy Smoke (DWC) had heat stress and had to chop half of her. A week later, an additional a/c unit, and she is back on track. Funny, none of the others had heat stress, then again none of the others are this tall. Also, I had to wait a week to adjust her pH with a broken pH meter she ran into slight pH issues, but I now have a new pH meter, she is healthy again, and see my second pic as I dried the dying heat stressed trim exclusively making some nice looking blonde hash.

Not to bad for a run from exclusively dying buds that I dried, preserved in the freezer, and did an ice water hash run. Only 1.25 oz. of immature trim used.

Day 47 of Flower x 4 cultivars
Day Temp: 75F/45%RH
CO2 ppm: 1150
Light Cycle: Currently 11.5 hrs. On and 12.5 Off (gradually lowering lights on time by 5 min. per day from now until harvest)
LED: Viparspectra P4000, Phlizon 2000, 3x Phlizon 1000 linear series, 3x 660 nm deep red supplemental (15 min. in th AM prior to lights on and 15 mins. PM prior to lights off), California Lightworks UVB supplemental (For 1hr. AM, 30 mins prior to lights on and thereafter, 1hr. indirectly at Noon, and for 1 hr. PM, 30 mins before and after main lights off)
I plan on gradually increasing UVB supplemental by 5-10 mins increase per day unless leaf curling problems occur. Thus far, there has been no UVB damage visible on the 3 cultivars getting the UVB treatment.

Note: Holy Smoke (DWC) had issues with heat stress and half of her had to be chopped but she is back on track and budding again following a cool flush and an extra a/c unit. The other 3 cultivars currently getting UVB showed no signs of heat stress during the 3 day 90 F heat wave. 1 UVB is really only enough for 3 of my sized plants with the height I’m experimenting with it at.

Is probably going to take the full 9-10 weeks of flower as her pistils are just beginning to turn orange in spots. Stills very healthy girl.

(This is the tall lady that had heat stress problems and this is what I saved of her. About 2/3 saved and 1/3 chopped) She is budding nicely again and other than leaf burns she is healthy and coming along nicely.

The drought info is interesting - I do drught my plants towards the end and I believe it does indeed increase resin production on some plants, particularly Sativa dominant which I will drought until the leaves drop off at the end
In my view, the plant needs nothing at all to ripen the buds/trichs

Day 52 of Flower

Decreased light time to 11 hrs.
Increased UVB supplemental to all 11 hrs. of lights on (Have been gradually increasing the time UVB is on to avoid sunburned leaves by letting the plant adjust to it over time.

Holy Smoke was set back a week due to bad heat stress and having to chop half of her down in order to save her. She is now fully recovered after flushing and getting the temp. down dramatically to ideal. She is now budding nicely with a thick coating of trichomes (probably from all the stress she's endured lol).

Not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous that I cant get seeds from some of those companies because I'm in the US. I would love to grow the francos lemon cheese strain from greenpoint but they dont ship to us
