PeeJay's Perpetual Organic Homebrewed Soil - Stealth Cabinet And Greenhouse Grow

Bud washing is a popular trend on this forum, Mr. Green. The resins are not water soluble so it doesn't wash away any good stuff. Washing gets rid of the built up dust, stray hair, dead bugs, etc, and results in a cleaner, smoother smoke. It's scary when you see all the crud that washes off into the solution.

RE one of your earlier suggestions I keep meaning to pop into a smoke shop I stroll by everytime I walk to work and pick up some boneva packs. People seem to like them. Do you use them Gray? I think you do...

Thanks For The Response In Terms Of Washing The Herbs! And The Boveda Humidipaks

Thanks for that bit of info brother!
I thought maybe you had to apply a late foliar for some reason!
But sound! I Think I'll give it a try when the time comes with a plant or two, since I've never done it before!
Can't go wrong with a new experiment in my opinion! Always something new to be learned!

But do you care to share the exact process sometime whenever you get a moment, or point me out tot a thread here where you guys talk about it! I've never seen it practiced before on any other of the 4/5 forums that I've visited over the years!
Of course I'll read into a little on my own! Just would be nice to see how you do it since it's not your first walk in the park!

And in regards to the humidpaks, just order here Amazon: Boveda Medium (8 Gram) Humidipak 62% 10 Pack

This is where I get mine from!

:peace: & Blessings

Congrats PJ

I tried the washing pj, I washed a coupla pounds last summer........then I didn't wash a coupla pounds and compared; The biggest difference was the smell, it was wayyyyyyy muted on the washed buds, and just because the trichs are water soluable......does not negate the fact of how delicate the trichs are.....good luck, I do this commercially......I have to have the best I can every time! Good looking buds you got there!

Thanks for the observations, Mc. A point of origin question for you; did you ever hang out in the loadie lot? If that seems like an odd question pay it no heed. It's just a geographical reference from my youth and you'd laugh if you did.

Anyway, I can see how washing might mute the aroma of the dried buds. Aroma certainly adds to bag appeal. Since I only grow for myself I don't care as much about bag appeal as a commercial grower would. I'm not of the mindset, like some, that I would turn up my nose and refuse to smoke unwashed bud. On the other hand, I wash all the produce that I consume - lettuce, grapes, etc. I'll continue to wash my harvests until I see some serious negative results from doing it and negative results are relative to situation.

I've had this happen, too, PeeJay, and Mac :cheesygrinsmiley:. I think it was my Wild Thailand that lost I bet half its aroma. It was dramatic and undeniable - just a dusty dry smell until you crushed a bud. But I use very hot water and I'm not precise about the lemon/baking soda mix. Other strains got better, richer, fuller, from the wash. Maybe it could be terpene dependant?

I still will be washing mine because of the foliars - a no-brainer for me - but the method is still being developed and some observation and study are in order. I saw a lot of trichs with no bulbs on my last test branch, so I'm going to be a little more gentle with my swishing and put the loupe on everything after I wash, for a check.

That's two for loss of aroma. Like so many things in the growing community there is likely no "right" or "wrong" answer. There are die-hards on both sides of the issue and lots of middle ground. So much depends on the individual situation.

I here both sides PJ, but how can u say u don't care so much about bag appeal? True there aren't customers u have to convince to buy the product based on looks and smell... But... Surely u smoke down with friends. It is pretty cool when someone can smell the bud in your pocket before u ever bring it out.
And I'm pretty certain you are shooting for world class product (we all are in our living soils)!

My personal opinion (i have washed buds) is that bud washing is a fad that won't stand the test of time.

Maybe ill eat my words someday but I seriously doubt it.

No offense at all to anyone. Just tossing my opinion out there.

I should add that I just held this branch under running aerated kitchen sink water - cold, hot, cold. That might've been too much of a pounding. I'm not going to do that again.

Well CO, I do smoke out friends now and then. I'm an old man though. Mostly I just have a toke or some canna-butter on toast before bed. Compared to most smokers I go through weed very slowly. I'm not sure I would want friends smelling my bud before I even pull it out of my pocket... If they can smell it, so can the officer who pulls me over because a brake light is out. lol. Friends I've shared with have enjoyed the product I've grown very much because it gets them baked and smokes nice and smooth. They aren't the "whoa dude, that is some dank smelling shiz!" crowd, really. *Shrug*

Don't get me wrong, if the weed smells good that is cool. I wouldn't do anything to try to mute the aroma on purpose. Neither Gray nor Mac said that washing decreased potency dramatically. Gray did say that in one case he thought he might of damaged some trics and that he is going to give a loop look-see in the future to get a better idea if it does noticeable damage. He's pretty meticulous and will let us know what he observes if asked down the road. I did see in your journal (I think) where you perceived a taste from the baking soda wash in your trial. Sensory evaluation is a funny thing. What we really need to do is get samples from washed and unwashed bud and do blind triangle, duo trio, attribute difference, QDA, and TPA tests... Then we can run chemical analysis. What we need is a $20,000 dollar research grant. lol In the mean time all we have to go on is anecdotal evidence and conjecture. Until hard facts are in I'll continue to wash the crap off my buds just like I wash it off spinach.

My main reason for growing the way I do - in a complete mineralized soil - is because it is really easy. There is little stress about feeding. A healthy high-brix plant naturally repels pests. I know exactly what has gone into and onto the plant. Growing plants of any kind is something I've always enjoyed. It should be fun and relaxing.

Bud washing is one of those subjects that is always going to spark debate, like defol. Wash or don't wash. Makes little difference to me! For my part I'd prefer not to smoke lint, dust, foliar spray residues, stray hairs... Even if it did compromise potency a tad I'd probably still wash. Heck, one hit of the Darkstar sample bud and I was baked for six hours lol.

Way back in my journal there is a thing about making herbal greenhouse deodorizer with fragrant herbs fixed with orris or patchouli. They work great. One is always hanging in the greenhouse and it doesn't smell like dank out there - it smells herbal but not like skunk. When I shake the muslin bag it rains down scented dust. That falls on the plants. Do I want to smoke orris root? Nope. When someone walks down the sidewalk do I want them to smell weed and think they should have a look around in case there is weed to gink? Nope. The deodorizer confuses the smell and I can wash the resulting dust off my plants after harvest.

There is a huge diversity in growers with many differing priorities out there.

I'm not sure I would want friends smelling my bud before I even pull it out of my pocket... If they can smell it, so can the officer

Amen PJ.
