PeeJay's Perpetual Organic Homebrewed Soil - Stealth Cabinet And Greenhouse Grow

An update for the Great Seedling Caper. Two were born overnight. First, the Sage n' Sour that has been moved from the top of the refrigerator and is under the CFL ~ 2-3". You can see that it has already shed the seed coat and membrane.

Second WP1, also known as the BAR special. This is the one that has been under CFLs since the beginning 2-3". I was worried I'd cooked this little bugger when I left put it under the lights with plastic over it. Not the best picture here, but you can see it popping up right in the center. This plant remains under CFL's 2-3". This one is barely up. The seed coat is visible, so still attached at this point.

WP2 is still on top of the refrigerator. I'll check it again when I get home this afternoon. It will go under the lights at 6.5".

Quick update. WP2 is up out of the soil and under CFLs 6.5-7". Three for three! It's been 72 hours since I droped them in the water to soak until they sank. Photos later this evening.

OK, picture time! First here is White Panther #2, the last to break ground and now under lights 6.5-7 inches.

White Panther #1 has shed her membrane and tossing off her seed coat. Looking good. Under lights 2-3 inches.

I'd mentioned earlier that there was a good shot of myco in the seedling soil. Once the plants go under light for a couple of hours you can see the bloom of red fungus/mold going crazy on top of the soil. People hear mold and they think, Oh no! Not in this case. Mold is only bad if it grows on buds or leaves. This type of mold only grows on top of the soil. It decomposes organic matter and helps feed the plant! You can look back at the picture of WP1 from earlier today and there is no mold. There is also no mold on WP2 that just went under the light. When I update tomorrow it'll be there.

Here is th Sage n' Sour. The cotyledons are open and she's makin' energy.

And because seedlings are boring, here is some bud porn! Darkstar with 4 weeks or a little more to go. This strain has a reputation for a being a heavy-duty couch-lock indica- what I want this grow. She's looking sweet!

Great pics peejay! Love the bud porn. ;-)
When you spoke of the red mold, it reminded me that this morning when I was checking the seeds that have not sprouted there were a couple of areas on top of the soil with a tiny amount of whispy cottonish looking mold. Have you found that in any of your soils?
I was going to get a close up pic this morning, and forgot. I'll try to get one tonight.
I don't think those seeds are going to sprout, they were just bad from the get go. One more day of waiting and I'm going to toss them. I think by that time the new seeds will have popped and be ready for soil.

Canna, if it is white wooly mold you should try to get rid of it. The red fungus is harmless and beneficial. When I said mold on top of the soil was ok, it may be, or it may not... My mold comment was a little too much of a blanket statement. Some kinds of white wooly stuff can cause respiratory problems from the spores it sends off. Fungus knats love that stuff, too.

You can get rid of it by scraping the worst off and sprinkling cinnamon on it while the top of the soil is dry between watering, from what I read. I also recall that if you use the cinnamon that your cat will think it's the most interesting thing ever. Be extra careful not to let the cat in the grow area!

Thanks Peejay, I went looking for the white stuff and couldn't find any. I must have tossed it this morning without even thinking about it. LOL
I'll keep a watch on it though.
And Kitty lost grow room privileges when I found cat hair on my buds a couple weeks before harvest! :laughtwo:

LOL. I know the kitty is banned. Just thinking that the cinnamon excitement may increase kitty's desire to violate the prohibition. The white mold won't hurt your plants (unless you have a fungus gnat crisis.) It my not be good for YOU though.

Beautiful Darkstars PeeJay - so many trichs and 4 weeks to go!

And I'm eager to see how your Panthers turn out.

:thumb:

There may be a fatality in the seeding experiment. I forgot to charge the camera battery so there won't be pictures for a while. This situation went bad...

You can't really tell from the picture, but the shed membrane is still inside the pac-man like jaws of the seed coat and laying across the bottom cotyledon. When I looked before going to bed last night the bottom cot was dead and the seedling was in distress big-time. I couldn't tell why until I dislodged the seed coat and saw what happened. The seedling is still alive-barely this morning with only one sad looking cot. I don't think it had anything to do with the proximity to the light. We'll see if it hangs on.

I'd left the Panther from last harvest alone to cure for a couple more weeks since it was smoking a little harsh. Ripped a big bong of it last night and it has smoothed out and seems even more potent if that is possible. I want to see how it does in the amended soil. If the way the Darkstar is going is an indicator it will be even better next run. I'm very happy with the Panther, as I know you are with yours.

Pee Jay that Darkstar is looking amazing! I love that strain. I got two more going right now and I am going to make sure that I take plenty of clones because that is one that I want to keep around!

Have you sampled yours yet Backpackin'? It has become much more fragrant in the last week. It smells strongly of turpenine - pine, resin, fuel - reminds me of cleaning paint brushes as a kid. I don't know if people still use turpentine for that anymore...

If it had been a little deeper it would probably have pulled it the rest of the way off. I thought the coat would drop off easily as the cotyledons turned up towards the light. I didn't realize there was a wad of slimy membrane down in those jaws wreaking death and destruction lol.

Those were closer to 1/2 than 3/4. I was surprised by how thick the seed jacket was when I got it off there. I've see other seedlings have trouble shedding the jacket before, but never the packman jaws like that with the membrane gone from the cots. I like to think it's a freak of nature. :)

Well, I should have taken your bet you on the seedling I have that spilled and is dying. Then we could have bet that this one will survive for you and you would have your bet right back. Mine is dead.
I wonder if a seedling can survive with just one cotyledon....will be interesting to see this one and what it winds up doing.
