Stay clear of the Kelloggs. I tried the Patio Plus and it had pH in the mid 7s out of the bag! Nearly killed my plants this spring until I completely cleaned the roots and repotted them.that means going to the Home Depot to try to find some acceptable soil and god only knows what else!
Yeouch - If I decide to try my hand at soil, I’ll keep that in mind (what IS a safe ph level for soil?)Nice work on the babies Krissi!

5.8-6.2, generally. I've seen up to 6.7 be just fineYeouch - If I decide to try my hand at soil, I’ll keep that in mind (what IS a safe ph level for soil?)
Soil should be in the mid to high 6s. For example, Fox Farms Ocean Forest says it's pH adjusted at 6.3 to 6.8. My bag of Patio Plus was at 7.6!Yeouch - If I decide to try my hand at soil, I’ll keep that in mind (what IS a safe ph level for soil?)
That would be the range for soilless/peat-based media like ProMix or Sunshine Mix. 6.2 is the top end there, and above that you should correct it down to the high 5s.5.8-6.2, generally. I've seen up to 6.7 be just fine
Thanks on the babies...they look better every hour cause I'm checking lol and thank you...that's true, it is soil specific and strain, correct?Soil should be in the mid to high 6s. For example, Fox Farms Ocean Forest says it's pH adjusted at 6.3 to 6.8. My bag of Patio Plus was at 7.6!

I'm not sure what you mean about strain. Soil pH is set higher because it naturally has a lot of micro-nutrients, and keeping the pH higher keeps them from being absorbed too quickly by the plants. Since peat has no natural nutrients at all they pH it in the 5s, so the micros in the nutes can be readily taken up.it is soil specific and strain, correct?
I have read in a few places that certain strains can handle and/or prefer a pH to be of a lower or higher level. Any fact in that to your knowledge?I'm not sure what you mean about strain. Thank you kindlyNone to my knowledge. Certain berries and ornamentals prefer different types of pH soils, but for cannabis the pH is set by the manufacturer of the media to fit what it's made from: peat or soil/humus.
If you build your own substrate you would still follow the guidelines I posted above.
Thank you. Glad I asked you today and you took that time to tell me...thank Country Hippie for me tomorrow...what are the odds that would be a lightning deal and have an extra 22% Prime coupon today on Veteran's Day? Careful go in the morning. Much love...
You can probably order some soil from the local hydroponics store and then pick it up when it arrives (if they don't have it in stock). The costs of Home Depot FF soil is about twice as much as my "local" hydro store. When I say "local", I mean the closest hydro store to me is a 6 or 8 hour round trip, given time-o-day, traffic congestion and stops for eats/rest-breaks. ppm CharlieDoing great! I’m seriously considering trying to get a few seeds to grow in some soil - but oy vey … that means going to the Home Depot to try to find some acceptable soil and god only knows what else!
Tx @ppm Charlie - I’ll have to see where there IS a hydroponics store around me … I *think* we have one somewhereYou can probably order some soil from the local hydroponics store and then pick it up when it arrives (if they don't have it in stock). Sometimes what is so obvious to others is hidden from our mind's eye..."forest for the trees" sort of thing. Seek and ye shall find.Tx @ppm Charlie - I’ll have to see where there IS a hydroponics store around me … I *think* we have one somewhere

Looking good Momma! Your Sprinkles looks to be at about the exact same stage as my Sour Livers (hmmm - should probably give her a name, huh?)Girls are all looking better today. Every one is in a different stage of recovery and growth since finally figuring out the proper dim and distance on the LED. For all of you that didn't know, all of my previous seedlings have been under 6-60W full spectrum bulbs-this is my first foray into the seedling stage using LED lights.
Hey I think a 7/7 germ rate was pretty good, even though I don't think I've ever not germinated one...seedlings are not in trouble anymore and I've learned a lot this go round with my new equipment. I'm happy with that. I'll be a better seedling Mama next round now that I have the hang of this new set up...
Anyway...here we are this morning.
Goldie is trying to push her teeniest little second leaves out, I can actually see the bump without squinting today (lol)
Onyx first set has now fully recovered
J.H. Spidey and her curling first trues have been making their way back up since the transition
Limelight is the slowest to recover..I don't know if we will be saving her first set or just focusing on her healthy seconds coming in
Both Gelatos, Vanilla and Sprinkles made a complete 180 already.
Coloring is returning to "not burnt by Mama" and they are all on their way to a full recovery
And group shot has a +1 with Gigi, sticking around for the photo opp.
Happy rainy Saturday from NJ. Happy growing!
