Some people believe in letting the top couple of inches dry out before watering but I believe that good soil should have good bacteria in it and if you let the soil dry out the bacteria die. All living things need water to survive and so do bacteria. So if the top of the soil dries out then it basically becomes dead. Not too scientific but it's what I believe. If the top inch or so of soil dies out then roots in that part will die too. If you keep it moist but not soaking wet the roots will survive in there. More roots, more fruits my friend.

That's enough ranting for one day lol.
 
This is one reason LOS growers have a living mulch growing. The living mulch keeps the upper zone aerated and evenly moist. It also appears to boost the health of the plant by having other root zones to interact with.
