TIS THE SEASON...BUD ROT SEASON

Hi folks, what a day! It's calm before the storm! I'm battening down the hatches here readying for a noreaster in a day or two. We're getting some wind and rain. Maybe 50 to 60 mph so everybody's tied down! You'd never know it today! It's perfect out! A good day to check for rot and I found some. No ladder, I'm medded up and tipsy. I grabbed branches and brought them to me for a looksee and found 6 or 8 places mostly on the Cherries D. I wasn't seeing it as I was looking for "the" limp brown leaf at the stem. They aren't showing like that this year or maybe I'm getting in early? I don't know.
Here's an example of what I'm finding and cutting out.
Other than that they grow forward.
@Bode are you expecting big weather your way this weekend?

Looks like this side of the state should be ok when Lee passes, I hope you all on the other side of the state fair ok, battening down the hatches is the best thing. In fact, I just looked at the weather for western Ma. and it looks good next week.

Highya SO,

I'm expecting the center to go through Nova Scotia, and still get maybe 75 mph winds, maybe not. I've done all I can do. Time for it to come on, and get it over with!! Last I heard, NOAA said landfall Sat a.m. Need to check again. I wish you luck with your massive ladies!! Happy Smokin'

P.S. Oh, and on the botrytis, that's the same as what I'm seeing. I've never had worms or caterpillars. So, I guess I'm fortunate that way.

Bummer about the rot Stone, why does it seem to always attack the beautiful plants? I lost several nice Panama colas to fungus. But was totally my fault. CL🍀 :thumb: :cheer:

Oof on the rot. :( Are there caterpillars in the middle of that or is it purely random botrytis?
I'm finding caterpillars in most but not all. Little Sh*ts!

Yeah sun's coming out for the whole week! That'll boost them!

You're on the edge of the zone @75mph Bode! Best of luck to you! I know you did what you can! I'm hoping for the best!

No little maggies in your rotten buds? You must be mitigating well!
Nooooooo. That sucks wholesale.
We'll be fine! I got in IKLWA and tied the 4 biggest branches into the main trunk the other day. You get this wind all the time at your place don't you? I have some trees as a barrier here too.

Nature has her rules Cap'n. Rots one of them I guess. Oh well. I'll get a good share most likely! Outdoors is different. Here up north anyway. At harvest time we look at the good bud and forget the bad. It's a toll for growing outdoors. I'm ok with that.
Indoors is out of the question! Plants aren't 10 feet tall holding several pounds of magic on them! We have to fight that with all we have!

I upped the dolomite in my amend mix and still they acted like there was nothing there. They have no problem with a 4 ml shot of cal/mag down the pipe every day for most of them. The giants want more. EarthBox would has us mix a pound of dolomite lime in the soil on start of a grow. I can't wrap my head around that because I use my soil over again. Seems to me a pound every grow is a lot after a while. What do you think? It's tempting. I want to try it. Maybe I will and keep that soil separate to test.
Hey Stone,

The manufacturer of my new light has suggested in the instruction manual that more calcium and magnesium be added to the soil to offset the demands placed on the plant by todays intense LED's so its a different reason than you for adding extra dolomite and other calciums, but I too recycle my LOS.

At 1st I was apprehensive but then I thought "Well if I'm adding CalMag or dolomite does it really matter? It's still getting recycled" so I figured I would try it.

It was right at potting time so I didn't have time to cook it in and me being me thought "Well lets see what happens, what could go wrong? Who don't love an experiment?".

Today is day 33 of veg and the seeds were sprouted in their final 10gal pots. So far the extra calcium hasn't caused any grief.

Here is my recipe per 20 gallons of soil with the extra calcium listed below and mixed in right at potting. I don't know how it will finish and I don't know yet how it will recycle, but so far it hasn't been detrimental at all and brix is at 11 across all 4 pots so the health is there.

I don't know how much a pound is but I will weigh a cup out later today when lights come on and get back to you.
-----------------------------------------------------
Recycled soil May 17

20 gals recycled soil
2 gals coco
5 cups prilled dolomite
1 cup blood meal
.5 cup bat guano
1 cup glacial rock dust
3 cups feather meal
3 cups bone meal
1.5 cups greensand
.3 cups SRP
2 cups organic basmati
.75 cups gypsum
3 cups kelp meal
2 cups alfalfa meal
1 cup oyster shell flour

Aug 9/23
Extra calcium per 20Gallons
1 cup prilled dolomite
1 cup oyster flour
.25 cup gypsum
Mixed in at potting.
-----------------------------------------------------

I combine it with this and it has always recycled well prior to the extra calcium:

Worm farm amendments per 4 gallon tray.

kitchen scraps/coffee grounds
2 oz cannabis bud
2 oz cannabis leaf
2 tablespoons kelp meal
2 tablespoons alfalfa meal
1 tablespoon greensand
1 tablespoon rock phosphate
1 teaspoon SRP
1 tablespoons oyster flour
1 tablespoon glacial rock dust
2 gals coco or 2 gals used soil alternating between trays
1 gal perlite

Spikes - 4 per pot, 1/4 cup each spike
1 part feathermeal
1 part bat guano (high phos guano)
1 part bone meal
.5 part kelp meal
.5 part alfalfa meal

So far so good. Hopefully you can compare your recipes and find a path that puts your mind at ease. This is for my top watered cloth pots.

Yeah I got it for putting things off instead of addressing the problem. I knew that the RH was too high in my closet. And by the time I got a dehuey and made a hole in the wall for an exhaust fan it was too late. Fungus already set in several colas. I could’ve cut it off but didn’t want to risk it and chunked everything infected. Then chopped earlier than I wanted and had to scope everything before jarring it. Talk about being a pita. Smh Live n Learn I guess? CL🍀

I saw you doing that last week and thought you were doing something great for this cause! I've been watching for your results. A cup is weighty eh? Did you use prilled or regular dolomite for mixing in?
I decided to give it a try with one of my barrels of soil next run. I'm trying regular dolomite lime because EarthBox recommended that. If it works in a SIP I'll do it until the soil tells me to change something. Thanks for your recipe! It looks delicious!

Yep! It won't happen in your garden any time soon Cap'n! I don't think I got any since I started running one. Mine's about run out of life, got a new one delivered last week and it looked like it got dropped from a mountain top! This week should bring the new one. This one's keeping up but on full 24/7. I'm still amazed at the amount of water these SIP's run through a plants transpiration.

I'm watching and dreaming Otter :) I had a visit from LR today and we talked about the excellent season you're having so far. Damn caterpillars and bits of rot. I hope the damage is minimal and that the bad weather passes quickly and without leaving a mark.

Yeah we get crazy wind all through the season. Hoping the damage is not too bad. Surprised as the Iklwa comes from a region with high humidity. Unless it's caterpillars causing the rot. Fingers crossed you get most of those buds to the end and harvest.

Are you going to be affected by the Hurricane 🌀? I have been through a few living in Florida. Torrential rain 🌧️ and extreme winds with lots of flooding. My first Tropical storm I thought was so cool until the water came across the street and up thru my floor. And then the power went out. Fingers crossed that it misses you bro. CL🍀. :thumb: :cheer:

It cool the world is this small! I'm sipping tea from India from your cup as I type, that I magically bought from my back porch. You get a visit from Mr Lerugged! Lucky! Thanks for talking me up! He does have a hand in the success being the genetics designer and donor! What a plant! She's very resilient so far to caterpillars and rot! They prefer my Cherries D right now. I'm ok with that. I found only one or two places on her. Tens on mine. Buds are getting there!

Still only one or two places on her Lerugged. Could'a been a pillar, I forget. It's been days :yahoo: . She's doing great! I'm starting to get a whiff of maybe lemon up close on buds? Still faint.

We're expecting 50 mph wind and not much rain. There's 2 bucket trucks parked in the firestation lot across the street so I guess we're getting ready. These ladies are hardy and I just bought a new roll of gorilla tape! We'll be good!

Hey Stone,

Sorry, yesterday got away from me. Here are some weights.

1 cup prilled dolomite - 8.57oz
1 cup powdered dolomite - 15.34 oz
1 cup prilled gypsum - 7.54 oz
1 cup oyster shell flour - 9.52 oz
all done on a digital kitchen scale

So my regular mix per 10 gallon pot before I added the extra calciums is:

22oz prilled dolomite
2.5oz prilled gypsum
4.75 oz oyster shell flor

So almost 2 pounds of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur per 10gal pot, and that gets my brix to at least 17 every grow. Now phosphorus and microbes and coco along with good watering practices all come into play too, but calcium/magnesium sets the stage for everything else to work.

I will get back to you later with a soil ph on what the pots read with the extra calciums, but normally it sits rock solid at 6.2ph.
