OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

re: OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

Haha yea you guys seem young to me.. cant tell the difference over the interwebs. Otm i had a thought.. the bottom of the cloner is clear, wont that let too much light in and kill the roots?

I don't think it matters as far as killing roots...but may affect algae build up sooner. I used a set-up similar to this with net cups, hydroton and rapid rooters when I got the current gals going...after they popped and I had a 1/4-1/2 tap, I put them in rooters in a humidity dome until the roots started to peak out the rooters, then put them in net cups with hydroton until I had a tangled mess of roots...the tub was clear like this one and never had a issue.

I did change water every 5-6 days and used Z7 in the water...

Yup, I'm proud of every grey hair on my head. They are badges that were earned. ;)

Right on! :high-five:

That's how I've always felt, but it seems most of the women around me don't agree. Oh well. Let them spend three hours and their money every month getting it colored. I'll spend time with my plants and get new toys. :blushsmile:

Re: OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 year old seeds+Current RDWC Harvest

Yea idk why i said kill the roots.. i have some little spider plants in lightbulbs i made into plant pots. The roots dont die from the light but it definitely builds up a whole ecosystem of algae in there. I can post a pic if you want. I hope im still like that when im 60+.. but i like thinking the pic is you otm haha. I wish i could see what you all look like in real life, my brain is very visual and i like to see what is going on. I would rather be deaf then blind that is for sure. I forgot to say i liked how you used foam as their place holders in the cloner, that is pretty neat!

Wats up 420 fam! Couldn't help but get in on this convo.

Recently tried doing a dwc grow before going to soil. Had the worst phythium case in my res. Ended being from light leaking thru. Killed my clones in a couple weeks and couldn't seem to ever get rid of it.

Sum vet growers advised me on using a molasses tea in my res but by them my babies were long gone.
So just went the soil route.

Welcome to the conversation Fsanti :welcome:

Light will play a factor in RDWD, DWC or any hydro system, in a small clone tub that is easy to change its not a big deal, I will probably change this one in a couple days to freshen the water any way and get rid of the excess clonex that falls off. It only holds 3 quarts, If I was doing a 20 gal tub with 75 clones, them it would be light proof.

The big enemy of a RDWC or DWC is the water temp combined with light leakage...algae has a harder time developing when the temps are below 70 degrees.

I designed my DIY RDWC and grow room with this in mind and will do a post with pictures on how and why I did mine this way and how it has helped keep the big system manageable so far for me.

Well I can tell you are a lot younger than I am, and I bet you can't ID the picture...maybe Snarly or Lady A can..:popcorn:.

Welcome to my growroom

As I said in my intro, I spent a lot of time researching be it u-tube, forms, online articles, I spent 4 months planning this room and lay-out to work with what space I had. Believe me, until you start one, frugal planning on space is not what you want to do.

This is my growroom within a room, it is framed out to be 10' x 5'...I lost 4" to framing & sheetrock, so no it is 116"x56"...4" doesn't seem like much but it makes a lot of difference when inside;

Inside this space I have a 4'x4'x78" tent that the clones are in now leaving me enough space to walk in and attend to everything...less than 2 feet;

So far this is manageable...a little tight but works...so far.

DIY RDWC System

I always wanted to try Deep Culture ever since I first read about in High Times Magazine back in the late 70's. I studied many videos, turnkey products avaialible, and the issues that users had with them. Leakage from uniseals that give out causing a mess, roots blocking returns causing a big mess, algae, temperature problems causing dead or dying plants were common complaints.

I designed my system to uses as much of the natural cooling of a cement basement floor as I could as well as the room it is in to keep temps down without using a chiller incorporated in the system. Everything is setting on concrete to help absorb the heat in the water, the air temp in the room is as cool as it is upstairs by heat or AC depending on the season...so far so good!

To eliminate any leakage, I used bulkhead fittings with silicone to seal the buckets inside and out as well as the 30 gal reservoir, I used black buckets, reservoir, piping and fittings as much as I could to eliminate light leakage, and used a bottom feed with a natural flow top drain incorporated with screens on both the feed and drain openings to stop roots from blocking the system.

The net pots on the buckets are 2" above the waterline, each bucket holds 3 gallons and 1 quart for a total of 13 gallons. In veg I was running 20 gallons every 7 days, in flower I increased it to 25 gallons and expect to go to 30 in a couple weeks because they are starting to really drink!

I located my reservoir outside the growroom and used a external 500 GPH Pondmaster pump and a 792 GPH Mag drive Air pump also located outside the growroom to help keep the water temp down. So far my high water temp has been 70 degrees and is usually setting around 68 degrees.

The system has worked well, I do have some changes that I will make when this current grow is done, one is to re-locate my shut-off valves to allow me to bring my buckets closer together, this change will help me gain 4" on each bucket row and allow the SCROG to turn into a full SOG.

Some of these pictures are from a few weeks back, and some are kinda of dark;

I'm getting all teary eyed over here man. ..... Great set up to say the least. Cannot wait to see how this goes along with the oldies. .

If I get lucky enough to pop some, hopefully a male & female, I would put them in coco coir, pull the veg tent out of the room, set it up in another area of the basement...lock them in and let them make seeds...once I had a harvest of seeds and of course smoke like we most likely had back then, I could play with RDWC...but as tall as these got outdoors, not to sure how a inside grow would work.

Interesting problem!:thumb:

Ha, OTM, ya got 3 years on me.

I'm liking your setup. It looks very well planned out and efficient. How do you like your GrowBoss? I use the same one and its gotten to be like my right arm. Don't think I could live without it.

re: OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

Thought I'd be a smartass and google the avatar and have the answer as to who that is. So I did. Got 1 hit on Google and this is what it was....

LOL, Keep thinking and looking for clues, gave Toasted one, when you are sleeping tonight it might come to you in a dream!

re: OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

good luck with the old seeds OTM

Thanks for stopping bye Hash, I hope I can have better luck than you did, your attempt was a good read, and I did pick up some tips...I think these were stored better than what you had...the temps were probably 45 degrees at low and 75 degrees at high and being stored in a brown bottle and in a box hopefully will help.

I have a couple soaking...they sank but no pop and I have some GA3 on order...keep your fingers crossed!:welcome:

I don't know why my response did not show below your quote on the last post, but to answer your question...I LOVE IT!

All I have to do is open the control room door and I know exactly what is going on in the RDWC, with that and the other electronic stuff I have outside the room, I don't even have to go in the growroom. Best $230 I ever spent! I not only use it as a monitor, I also use it for rez changes to PH & control the (5) 5gal buckets of nutes the changes are now requiring!

I will post more about this tomorrow along with some of the other "toys" I am using as well as my nute line plus other little things that may help.:thankyou:

Idk i cant think of it lol.. nice setup man. I can see all the research is really going to pay off well for you.. i wish my grow space was on cool concrete floors. Great job man cant wait to see those ladies make you some frosty buds!
