OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

Interesting post WeedNerd420. I have had far greater success with a simple pure indica cross of 2 landrace strains than anything else I've tried. I don't think that's a coincidence!

7-24 Evening Update;

Everything in the grow room is looking good, my spotted leaves problem on one of the Widow gals I posted about seems to have stopped by raising up the PH in the RDWC system to 6.0, new growth at the bud sites look normal and the problem is not spreading to other parts of the plant or showing up on the other gals in the system.

I did a res change on the clones and upped the nutes a bit, getting nice root system on the Widow clones and the Kush clones are not far behind.

The old bean report is the same as this morning, not as many tiny bubbles clinging to the seeds, but no signs of cracking yet. I had some time this afternoon to do more research on what I am trying to accomplish and basically learned why the last try failed.

The seeds cracked because of the absorption of water inside the shell (Testa), which is what is supposed to happen, all good so far, it also meant that the embryo was taking in water and starting to come to life, also all good.

What I should have done when I transferred them into the paper towel is open the seed case up more at that point, the reason that they closed back up within 12 hours later is because of the thin membrane that is surrounding the embryo. In a seed it is called endosperm and the older the seed gets, the tougher more like a rubber band the endosperm gets, while it was in water it was able to stretch easier, when I put them in the paper towel it tightened back up and closed the shell back up and the Radicle (Tap Root) didn't have enough energy to push through.

The Seed Biology Place The Seed Biology Place - The Seed Biology Place is a great source of information on how seeds work and a great place to research.

If I get cracking seeds like I did on the last try, I will use some sterilized tweezers to help the embryo break this endosperm and use distilled water with a very light root nutrient dose to hopefully give them some needed energy to continue developing the radicle or tap root.

Sorry for the long rant, my noggin is full of useful info and is probably on overload!:rofl:

:thanks:

Hope your eyes are still good lol, all that surgery talk. I'm panicked for you. .

My eyes are not that bad and I have a nice lighted adjustable magnifier like you would see in a doctors office...that is not the problem, its years of hard work with the hands that is questionable...the shakiness when working with small items is more of a concern!...seeds might go flying!:laughtwo:

Re: OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

Nice man looks like you hit books.. sounds like you made sense of some of it and came out with some helpful info. Not easy to do lol.

Thanks Toast!

I am not one to give up easily, I am not afraid of failure and I find it actually helps. If I had the net back in the 70's with all the info out there now, lord knows what I would have been able to grow!

I have nothing but time left...10, maybe 20 years so I will try to make the most of it and hopefully pass some of what I learn and have learned on to others so they can do the same!:passitleft:

You're really doing everything you can to get those seeds going. It's great that you have a plan of attack for the next time the seeds open up... the explanation makes sense, so now we just have to hope it works!

You dont succeed until you fail in some way.. we appreciate you spending your time here and helping us learn with you. Its awesome man and the internet can be great for some things!

Thanks for the vote of confidence and kind words, It really means a lot!:green_heart:

7-25 Surgery update;

This morning I found 3 beans had popped open so I fished them out on to a wet paper towel operating table and proceeded to help them along.

It was fairly easy, I had layered 4 soaked paper towels on the plate and made a small depression in the paper, set the seed upright with the cracked opening facing me and just used a sterilized compressed tweezers with a fine tip to sneak in between the shell and slowly let the tweezers go back to its natural open state.

You can see the endosperm in the middle seed (green looking skin coating the embryo). They are now back in their 80 degree home enjoying a fresh batch of distilled water with a little H2O2 and a couple drops of Rapid Root nutrients. I am hoping I can do surgery on the rest later in the day! :laughtwo:

OTM, Thank you so much for sharing this as you go. Though I don't have seeds that old I am trying to germinate, I am sure some day some one will come across this thread and glen much knowledge. Your desire to share this with us all will surely get you lots of good Karma.

May your tap root grow long my friend.

7-25 Update;

I had another patient that needed open shell surgery this afternoon, and I do believe we are starting to see a tap root in its beginning stages!:adore:

If you look close at the seed at the top left, you can see something starting to protrude out at the tip of the seed, my camera can't get any closer and it is a bit more pronounced with a magnifier...wish my microscope camera would get here!

Will be keeping a close eye on that one!:geek:

The clones are actually starting to look like plants again, starting to get some cute new leaves growing where ever I cut away the dying fans. The bushy ones at the front are the White Widow clones and the thinner ones in the back are the Purple Kush clones.

I spent a hour or so cleaning up the dead or dying growth under the scrog net this afternoon, took about 1/2 of a plastic Walmart bag out, lots of cute little buds under that net so I should have some nice popcorn to harvest!

While I was under there, I came upon this strange looking bud...not sure what to make of it...start of a hermie?

If anyone has a idea what it is or what to do with it, let me know. I do know after I got done with the leaf plucking my hands and arms were real sticky and smelled good!:laughtwo:

:thankyou:
