OMM's Social Network Part 3

A challenge for you all.....................find a female AK47 seed from Serious Seeds. There are none to be found.

It's one of serious seeds best marketed varieties! They will be back in stock sometime this year I bet.

BTW, you shouldn't be buying seeds! You have things that are probably rated higher anyway... Like... Maybe 30 different strains ;)

Edit: hey buddy, if you want to try cannabis breeding after this go... Ive got 18 Kauai Electric seeds...

Hello THsea I know it is very popular....it is with me too. It's one of my favorites after this last grow. Only have maybe a half left.

Breeding? IDK. Punky is outside. In a fabric pot. We will see how that goes.

It would be a while we both have grows to finish and mine is just about to start. I would be glad to help you. :high-five:

Note: Even thou we are on the same island my grow conditions are sure different than yours???

:cheesygrinsmiley: come on OMM, I wanna see that!!!!! When you do pick a few of those exotics to have ready to make hybrids!!!!!

Easy for you to say! Buckshot ! THsea wants to do cross backs and other things I don't know about. He wants to acclimatize that strain for here so it will be a true Hawaiian strain. I can go for that.
Truthfully, I could think of a few good crosses I'd like to do from the strains I grow. So much to do, so little time.:surf:

Our islands are filled with Microclimates. Yea boy, and I'm pretty sure KE is an indoor variety???

Way cool about the Punky, I think you will enjoy the SmartPots... Ttyl OMM!

I like the smart pots. They are so inexpensive and real easy to work with. I also notice the roots grow very similar to the Airpots.
:thumb:

I have similar goals, to allow air (oxygen) to roots, but I go with a very fast draining soil, rather then pots that breath. A fine grain water retentive soil, that most commercially sold soil is, requires things like smart pots as the roots tend to grow to the outside of the pot, searching for air. A highly aerated soil mix grows roots evenly and you rarely get rootbound. You also have the effect of lowering the perched water table, basically making it like a larger pot. Since it is hard to find a commercial premixed soil that has sufficient aeration, I mix my own. The main component is bark. To me, soil is the number one limiting factor, aside from light. If you get the soil right, your plants will prosper even in less then optimal conditions otherwise.

I USE AN ORGANIC HUMUS SOIL, BUT HAVE AERATED IT MORE THIS TIME AS IT HELD WATER ALOT. So I went with a more aerated soil this time which also helps prevent fungus gnat infest. So yeah, good soil, GOOD PLANT:):)

I can see how the airated soil can use less space in the hard sided pot. How often do you have to water the plants by using this type of soil?
Don't get me wrong. Just sounds like you would have to be watering the plant a lot.

It's not that bad reallly, usually once or twice a week, although outdoors daily is not uncommon. It's really about what's convenient to the grower vs. what's best for the plant. Given enough water, plant will explode in a highly aerated soil, not unlike how plants grow in an aeroponics system due to lots of oxygen. There are a couple of things aside from automation to help with water frequency if you find that too much. One is use a larger pot. The other is to water completely saturating the soil rather then in sips. Also one additional advantage is that a fast soil tends to be self flushing so salt building up doesn't happen. The mix I use is 5 parts pine bark, 1 part peat 1 part perlite, also known as 5-1-1. I also use dolomite lime and OC, although you can use regular fertilizers as well. If I have a plant that likes a wetter or dryer soil (I grow many different types of plants in this soil mix) I just adjust the peat component. If you fully water the soil so that the peat component doesn't dry out, you really don't have to water much more often. Just make sure the peat doesn't go hydrophobic, as it can also do in peat based soils. One other thing as well, I find that this soil mix tends to dry out slowly, and tends to stay moist. Not like peat based soils that stay wet and then seem to dry out instantly becoming hydrophobic, and don't seem to have much middle (moist) ground. Plants like a moist but not wet environment which is very easy to attain with 5-1-1.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread OMM. I know you guys love your airpots and such, but I just wanted you to know there is an alternative using standard pots and cheap to make soil if you want to try something different. You may be surprised by the results. I know I was when I started using it on superhot peppers. Not sure what kind of bark you got available. Pine is the best, fir bark is next. Not sure about your island, but you may have another softwood bark you can use. Hardwood is not good to use. If you want try it sometime I can give more details if you need it.

Hey Mando,
Well I used about 50%- HUMUS SOIL 100% organic soil with active n,p,k
30% - Premium quality potting mix
20% - Pea straw mulch and also a little Cal/mag spread thru the soil, with some good quality slow release fert.
This is a much more efficient draining soil, and yes, I do have to water more often, BUT THIS IS ONLY DUE TO THE HIGH TEMPS OUTSIDE +35*C, So I water twice a day instead of one solid water. So she gets about 6L in morning and another 6 or 7 once the tops dry again in few hours. This is the most effective may to maintain my plant as I do not have any extraction fans or such, so I just circulate air as best as possible and sometimes Grow space temps have hit over 40*C, so this is why what Im doing is neccessary.
But if you are not going thru the same conditions, watering once will be ok and you shouldnt have to water for another 48hrs or so. Ideally Id like to have a proper routine but its near impossible with the varying temps and Im still waiting for my air con to be delivered so that will help me no end once it arrives.
In regard to pine bark, I try to steer clear of it.. The risk of bad bugs increases a bit usually with average soil making practices associated with some pine bark pot mix makers. THATS JUST MY OPINION BASED ON INFO FROM GUYS HERE AND THE STOCKISTS. Some p/bark mixes are ok. So if you re like me, try to get as close to 100% organic as you can, also with an active n,p,k base that increases as break down occurs.
With my last soil it was very retentative and I believe it was too compacted and also as it wasnt free draining some nutes etc; possibly leached from the soil or a build up causing lock out. Ive tested my soils PH a fair few times ( not as much as last time ) and its been stable at about 6.8, so thats good, as I wanted to try to keep it in an area where its capable of recieving nutes that may lock out if its low.
THANKS OMM FOR YOUR POSTS IT SEEMS YA MAY HAVE A FEW MORE GUYS POPPING IN FOR SOME ADVICE;)
and feel free to send me a bitch slap for HI JACK!! lol.. Sorry was just posting so it can maybe help give these guys a better idea as to soil choice. HOPE IT HELPS SOMEONE!!! ADIOS AMIGO's:):) SMOKEMUPM8:thanks::420:

Microclimates....That's cool. IDK yet about the smart pots....mine wants to go all over the place. Of course I was under Jo pressure at the time.:whoa::whoa:

If KE is under lights we may have to wait until I get another AC before the tent is really comfortable again.

Have a cheesy day!:thumb:

Damn guys ! I feel like I am under attack! Have you even read some of my Journals? Do you even know what I do?
I must have some kind of idea what I'm doing with my soil. Last grow I used very few Airpots and am thinking of selling them all. Last grow I used mostly regular pots.
I was really put out when they stopped selling Happy Frog soil here. Now is it buying different soils and mixing them to get the soil like I like it. Some how I mange to get a few plants to grow.

I am also really restricted by what I can physically do. At 71 years old I am lucky to be able to grow at all. I know you guys mean well, but cut me some slack. I have a helper because I could not do this without help.

Growing is fun for me...keeping a journal is fun for me. When it gets too much for me I will quit. If my plant gets me a buzz...it's a good one...is it the best that can be grown...I doubt it. I'll leave that to you younger more fit folks. I ask you to mentally walk in my shoes for a bit. End of rant.
:Namaste::peace:

A couple of notes. I wouldn't consider that a fast draining soil by any stretch. You need about 70% larger particles or you are really are just adding marbles to a soup which does not improve drainage. As far as pine bark, I've never had any pest issues with it, and I've used several brands. In fact, I get less pests such as fungus gnats and whiteflies. Plant health stops other pests such as aphids and mites. I should mention though the bark should be composted pine bark fines, not those red nuggets which tend to soak up nitrogen.
