Oldsmokey Goes Hydro

Well... its made from a molecule that isn't readily available to the plant. The difference is the molecules orient themselves into chains and has difficulty getting where it needs to be. Monosciicic acid is a single atom and is much more bioavailable. Potassium based Silica isn't broken down enough when we buy it, but over time and run through the digestive tracts of a herd of bacteria it gets better. This doesn't help hydro. The Potassium based versions also have a bad shelf life. Its a bit unstable and can be a much weaker strength if old.

Its not all bad news... foliar feeding is a good way to apply these products as a leaf acquires elements different than roots. But, you arent gonna want to do this in flower. Which may be fine... some stop Silica in flower.
Ok, so not great for hydro but can be effective in mediums that have a herd of critters to make it more readily available for the plant. It also can be used in foliar feeding per manufacturer through early veg., I'm guessing until bud sites form. The dosage for foliar is a whopping 20ml per gallon.

Ive sorta made Silica a pet project
420% why I had asked you.

Now, it'll work in soil someday. But it depends on your soil and how much time you have. It will take a months to break down enough to be of any use... to be fair, you may have a product thats broken down enough to be of some use. It won't have the power of a monosilicic, but who knows. I used Botanicare's Silica Blast for a more than a year. It worked but I alway referred to it as diet Silica. It just didn't have the zing.

Man thats a lot of %

How did you feel about the overall season with Armor Si?
Bitter sweet. I think the microbes in the soil were able to break enough down to make some available, though I cannot confirm. I also liked using it to balance the highly acidic molasses I use.

But numerous times my ph has drifted up on me so I’ve recently stopped using it.

Like you I am very interested in silica so I’m really curious to try the power si on my clone. The parent plant for the clone is in mid flower so I already know how she grows so I’ll be able to see in the clone of the power si has any effects.

Power Si is very strong. Stay away from the high dosage. You should do well. Its much more stable than the other product due to trace Manganese and Boron.

Ok I’ll stick with the low dosage and see how that does.

Man, you are an encyclopedia on this stuff. Can’t thank you enough for sharing. :passitleft:

I really like Silica, because I like big plants, they go hand in hand. Theres a lot to this element and how it helps plants... it does many things really well. I think its important to get the word out. Funny how the word changes. New info shows up, or old info or tribal knowledge is found to be false (which happens a lot). I try to stay current.

If you really want to see Silica sing grow RDWC.

I could order power si from the USA cheaper than this stuff from Canada.
You were with me for my Wembley grow. That was Power Si. Since you're running hydro I think it would be a good move, even if you didn't use both veg/bloom products. Silica in bloom makes sense. According to Dr. Bugby trichomes are made of silica. Now, if thats true it would be a good idea to feed them Silica in flower

I’m with you and prefer bigger plants so the acid should be a great fit for that.

I’ll keep an eye out for your next journal in November.

When will you start your next season?

Very interesting indeed.
A long complicated read but quite interesting.

Man, THAT is good stuff. Just the fact it echos what Bugby said about an association with trichomes and Silica. But to go on explain a theory on trichomes and there use as a light wave guide... wild. Thank you very much...

I’m a bit weird in that I prefer reading something, as opposed to watching a video, but I also don’t have cable. I occasionally watch Netflix but get bored too quickly
