Ok Noob First Grow

re: Ok Noob First Grow

HOLY CRAP!!!! BIG CHANGES last night.

I hung the panda plastic to close off the flower room. In the process I had to move the canister filter hooked to my exhaust duct to the flower room. This morning my room was holding at 77 degrees and 42% humidity. Thats a 20% increase in rh. The plants literally grew an inch over night. They look so good right now!!!

Tonight I will change the water out in all buckets and add nutes and liquid bloom booster. After I turn the lights on in the flower room and the temp increases appropriately I will move them to flower leaving only the 2 new Northern lights and the 9 clippings in the clone machine in the veg area.

WOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!!! I am now on my way....:thumb:

I will do pics this evening when I change the water, add nutes and switch to the flower room. I am at work now....

Also excited as I am finalizing my first medical cannabis insurance policy. Working with a grower and dispencary here in NM and about to finalize their policy for 2012.

Its a great day! :Namaste:

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Well no flip last night. Instead more issues. I finally had everything ready and flipped the switch for the lights so it would get the room up to temp, and when I hit the switch only one light came on. So I switched the bulb now the same light came on. Ok I switched the plugs from one ballest to the other. Now the other light comes on...Bad ballest. Called my buddy who I got them from and he and I will meet up today so I can get another one...

One good note RH holding at 40%. All Buckets had water change and nutes added including a shot of bloom booster....

Once again Hopefully tonight I will flip them....

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Well I was not feeling well yesterday after puking the night before, but I went and picked up a ballest and timer box. I mounted the ballast this morning and checked the lights. THEY WORK! WOO HOOO....

Anyway I will do the switch tonight. I plan on firing the lights up when I get off of work. After the lights get that area up to temp I will start moving buckets. I guess this weekend I will start the res build. I will need it done most likely by next weekend as the clones should be ready then.
The room has been holding at 30-43% humidity depending on several things. But I think that is good.

Moving right along...

re: Ok Noob First Grow

I just re-read your entire journal. I notice you never mentioned water temps. You want to keep an eye on that in hydro, dwc. Just under 68 is ideal. Bad shit starts growing at 68 as I understand it. This probably isnt an issue now in the winter time, but keep it in mind come spring & summer.

With that thought in mind, I would plan on making those buckets RDWC with a chiller, main res tank, and 1 1/2" or 2" pvc. You'll have more air in the water with the recirculating and control of temps. As well, ph will be more balanced throughout and ppm's will be constant and easier to control.

While I'm only on my 2nd grow, I have read my ass off and am now a firm believer that if doing DWC with more than 1 bucket, just go RDWC.

Keep up the good work. I think you're doing fine on a first grow. Certainly havent had the root problems I had with my temps and shit in my first grow.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Thanks Bassman I will keep that in mind.

What I am planning is a res system where the res is outside of the room. This for one will keep the temps down.
I will try to get some pics of my roots this evening before/during the switch. The way I have it now is 5 gal buckets with large netpots with clay beads for medium. I also have a large airstone in each bucket. The Roots are going so well! When I change the water I just smile each time I lift the netpot out. I lift and lift and lift cause the roots have conformed to the shape of the bucket. The mass of roots are bright white and the exact size and shape of the bucket. It is just too cool to see. I also think the airstone keeps the water moving and prevents bad stuff from growing...

Anyway Thanks again for your advice. Hopefully I will be able to post pics in the next 24 hrs.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Don't get me wrong, you're doing good. But come summer time, your res temps will be a lot higher and will need to be addressed. Your res temps I'm sure are lower now with winter, garage, snow, etc. THAT's what keeps bad shit from growing. If the shit can't live in sub 68 degree water they cant live.

Airstones are great, I use two biguns per bucket. But an external pump, chiller during the summer will be huge for you in overall benefit. It will even add more oxygen to the mix. You can buy a chiller for about $200 that will do fine for your 30 odd gallons of buckets and the pvc and fittings may put you out $40 or even less. Also, the lower the water temp the more dissolved oxygen the water can take. This too is a huge boon for your girls.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Cool. I have heard of some chillers that other posters have made. I would like to see some directions to make those. I have that in mind and did think about that for summertime. I also plan on an AC unit to help keep the room down. So far with individual buckets it has yet to be a problem, so far.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Been ultra aware of bucket temps lately... thanks Bman...

The water in the clone machine and buckets with NL#5 clones seemed a little warm, so I added some cool RO water.

All plants moved to flower except clone machine and 2 Northern Lights #5 clones.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

ok, so buy a $200 chest freezer and mcguyver rig it to do the same thing a $200 chiller would do under warranty and most likely use less electricity too?

I know there are real home made from scratch units out there that do ok. But I personally would call that link kinda off the wall. Maybe it's ok for someone with a chest freezer not being used laying around but then they are drilling holes into a useable freezer they may actually wish to use some time down the road.

I dunno, maybe I'm being too critical.

Sorry wrong type of chest...over-medicated or under...

re: Ok Noob First Grow

That of course is not a water chiller. However, one could rig a external pump and run a copper cooling tube through such a chest and back to res to cool water. It's not very efficient with the need to constantly add ice. But it would work.

I paid $214 with tax for this chiller. It's quieter than the fans in my 600w LED lamp. It uses about 300w. Imho it's the best investment I made for DWC. Set and forget. Water temps are never an issue.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Cool, that seems simple enough. Make that and hook a duct line from it to the bucket contents to cool... Why would you not just put 32 oz of ice in the water or pour ice water into the res to do the same thing?
I am planning on buying an ac unit for my grow room before summer... I am hoping that should help res temps...

That even seems easier...

By the way, what is up with those brown roots? Should they not be white as can be? What is causing them to be so brown?
