Ok Noob First Grow

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Welcome Queen. I am happy to have you along. Hold on tight it's been a bumpy road so far. The good thing is they are still alive and looking good, At least all but one of the survivors. And that one has great roots so I think it will pull thru.

As far as those meters. I just got mine from ebay...see previous posts, and they work fine and come with calibration packets. Works way better then the vial and test liquid looking for a color... also see previous posts... Bumpy Bumpy Bumpy

LOL Welcome

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Ok caught up..Wow you did start off kinda bumpy like you said but you recovered really well...Just got to give you credit for starting out doing hydro. I have read others journals on it and it seems really complicated unless you're a brainiac..It makes me glad I chose to do soil...lol...Just too much stuff to retain at one time for me..lol..But I will still stay subbed just cause you make it so interesting...With Corey along for the ride, I don't see how you can go wrong....Good luck..

re: Ok Noob First Grow

So here are some new pics of the little ones. Plants 1-4 are about a week and 3 day old clones. Well That is when I got them anyway. Plant 5 is from the original 3 and the only survivor. I tied her down at one point. Now she just looks a little funny. Changed my mind on doing that until a future grow.

Tonight I change out the water in all buckets. I will add 2.0ml of nutes to all buckets.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Tonight I changed my water in each bucket as planned. I ph'd the water then added 2ml part A &B BPN to each bucket and rechecked the ph and ppm. Final was 5.8-6.1ph and 226-402ppm not sure why that was so different.....but while changing things out I noticed root growth on the 2 that had the smallest roots this morning and a few have so many roots its difficult to change water out, but no big deal.

By the weekend I plan on getting a 6 nipple air pump and add an airstone to each bucket. I don't know but assume that this will promote better root growth and overall plant growth. Not to mention keep the water fresher longer.

Please let me know your thoughts on adding an airstone to each bucket....

re: Ok Noob First Grow

:goodjob: keep up the good work man! I'm thinking of getting some hydroton and mixing it with soil for my next grow. if those browning fan leaves in pic 2 continue to head downhill you might want to consider pinching em off. I used to be hesitant as well but now I see how much it helps new, healthy growth fill the void of a potentially disease spreading fan leaf.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Well after I changed the water in each bucket last night I ph'd and added the 2ml of BPN nutes both Part A & B to each bucket.

As of this morning all plants look great! So far so good.

Corey, since I am starting to add the nutes and its not burning the plants this time, When should I add more nutes? Each bucket has 3-3.5 gals of water and I only added 2ml.

The ppm was under 400 on all buckets after the nutes were added. What would the proper ppm range be with nutes? PH is staying around 5.8 to 6.3 and PPM is staying under 500 right now.

Temps are around 75 and humidity is low at 23-28% with the bucket of water in the room. Should I keep using the humifier? That only brings it up to about 30-32%.

Is it a proper thought to add air stones to each bucket to airate the roots that are hanging into the buckets from the netpots? I would think that would help the root health and plant health.

StonedyCreek- Ya I have been doing minor trimming of the ugly leaves. My thought is if it crunches It is GONE.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Insuranceguy,

You're getting their. Ya RH is low. you want it up there around 60% or so in veg. use the humidifier imo. Try taking some washcloths, roll them up tight like a cigar, soak them, then put them around the top edges of the pots. This can help a lot.

#5 also looks ready for topping or fim. Were you planning on doing that?

I'll let Corey speak out on ppm but I think you're fine with the lower range ppm until they get just a bit bigger. But do what he says.

Edit: Oh and airstones are going to help tons!

re: Ok Noob First Grow

First, PLEASE add an airstone to each bucket!
If yiu wanna be really slick, buy some RO water for your next res change and increase to 2 or 3 ml of each part per gallon....be sure to use RO water though. Your water is super f'in hard. I always keep ph at around 5.5. I personally prefer lower ph than most folks. I am hesitant to tell you to add more nutes until you have heavy root growth. You can definitely up the nutes a little with RO water.

I will try the washcloths. I already have the pail full of water sitting in there as Corey suggested. Part of the problem is my exhaust sucks the humidity out too. When exhaust is on RH is 23% off I can hit 30% with humidifier on.

Fim - I need to learn more on that. I know it needs to be done but afraid to hurt them after all the bumps they have been thru.

I will be going in today for a spinal injection. That usually takes me out of action for 2 days before I start feeling better. I will wait til saturday to top them.

Any thoughts on adding the air stones? Anyone?

:thanks:

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Oh yeah, I usually keep my ppm around 300 to 400 at your plant size and until I have heavy root growth. I use RO water though and there is nothing in my water other than what I add.
Again, try some RO water and you will see the difference. You water sounds horrible if you are starting out at over 300 ppm with no nutes.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

another question...

If I put 6 seeds in a wet paper towel and 4 of them sprouted and the other 2 have remained in the wet paper towel for 5 days longer, is it safe to say they won't sprout?

I am guessing that they won't. I added root stim on the paper towel this morning to attempt to push them to sprout....

re: Ok Noob First Grow

100% agree with corey, 300ppm tap water? better than mine, but still shitty. use ro! mix as he suggests. Dont forget to add calmag!

Are the stones in yet? yea I know 11mins after my last, but that's how important they are.

give em a few more days, keep it dark and warm. they may get there.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Actually the PPM after PH and Nutes added was around 230+ to 300 except for one bucket. The one bucket was higher. Last check before changing water had one bucket at 520 or so and it had extra nutes. I will hook up my filter. Not RO but a charcoal filter. Says it clears out all particulates.

I will get that airstones and new pump as soon as I can. Like I said I cant today as I am going to dr.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

2Js I did just that. Trimmed some of the bad leaf off.

Last nite I added 3 new air pumps and put airstones in each bucket. One of the plants looked like the tuesday nutes burned it. So right away I changed the bucket out with fresh water and I will try again next week. All the others loved the nutes. They are showing great growth. Starting to reach. Already looking at changing things up next go around. A friend is going to assist me in adding a heart to my buckets. And changing to square buckets.

Pics in the next couple days.

re: Ok Noob First Grow

Queen it will be awhile for those pics. We have to wait for this storm to pass. Then we will drive to Colorado to clean out an old grow house...

Oh ok. Before and after pics would still be good. Kinda like having an extreme make over...lol
