Ok Noob First Grow

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

So I tried out the TDS/PPM meter. I tested all the buckets and the readings were between 270 and 343 respectively. I am thinking that is extremely low... Someone please advise...

PH is was at about 7 and I lowered it to approx 5.8-6

The 2 original small burned plants still look crappy. Bit the bullet, that is until I say roots. So I put them into small pots and placed under my Jump Start T5 just to see if they liked that better. Starting to think that they were too wet...

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

that is low, but I wouldnt fret for a few more leaves yet.

The ph was WAAY high. Generally you dont want to lower ph 1 full point. Kinda wacks em out a little with those swings. I have been told .5 per 4 hrs but don't know if that's true or not. But glad to see you have the meter now.

Test the ppm level in the plain water you are using, before nutes are added. That gets your neutral point, basically zero. Then add the nutes and test, the difference being the ppm of nutrients. 350-400 is plenty for those young ones, in my opinion. They need to establish a good root base before nutes can make a difference :thumb:

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

i agree, my PPm was something rediculous like 1100 when they were a week old i cant blve i still have living plants! i went full strength right off the bat( obviously did not study)... where youre at is good now i would say, but im new too, just sayin, youre gonna see the phrase 'less is more' alot in hydro...

i keep my res @ 5.8 PH religiously...

youll get em out of it...:peace:

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Base reading is 245 so with nutes its still low. I decided to experiment a little. I added one more ml of nutes just to see what reaction I will get. If its bad I will drain and flush that one. If it is good I will add one more ml to all other buckets. By adding the additional 1ml the ppm went to 345 so minimal change.

Thanks for the replys my friends.

JJames- Y aI hear ya. I try to keep them at 5.8 but they seem to change daily. So I have been checking PH 2-3 times a day. If it goes above 6.5 I lower it to 5.8-6. Now these are estimates cause my PH meter has not arrived yet and I am using the liquid/kit. PH meter should be here tomorrow or friday.

The one original that I tied down is doing great. Checked the PPM and the3gal net pot has roots hanging down 8-12 inches...:thumb:

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

OK so I can't believe ANY of the plants are alive. All I can say is DON'T EVER BUY PH LIQUIDS....

I have been testing 2-3x daily. The PH showed 5.8 to 7. I tried my new PH Meter out and it was , depending on which bucket, 7.7-8.4. I had calibration liquid to check that the meter was working right. And it was.

SO now all will be right. Taking them down .5 at a time. I will lower it twice a day until 5.8. And with the TDS/PPM meter now too. These little ladies should thrive!!!

All are still doing fine after the nutes.

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Hey INS.Guy, just got on board your journal, looks like a bit of a rough start but at least you got some experts all over it :thumb: . Its things like this that scared the sh*t outta me from ever trying hydro, though I'm sure once you get the hang of it, you'll be having the last laugh:laugh: I see a lot of people talking about outrageous PPm levels and I know its a reference to ph levels, but what are the Part per Millileter representing? I also saw that any tester that can test the Ph and PPm, are like over $100 ! Is knowing the "PPm" of your water for soil mediums necessarry? or just the ph balance. The whole PPm is a little grey to me. Anyway good luck friend, ill be keeping tuned in

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Stonedy I think its actually

PPM = Parts Per Million and PH stands for Potential of Hydrogen.

The testers I got were off of ebay from someone in California. If I remember right one was $11.95 and the other was $15.95.

As far as necessary, yes I do believe so. Then again I am a noob my self.... But let me tell ya I have learned alot in the past 2-3 weeks and seems like more everyday.

you will be reading seemingly all the time in the near future and it will pay off...
i have learned so much about all this in my very short life as a grower and feel i havent even scraped the surface...

i check my Ph/RH/H20 tmp/PPM twice daily... just after lights on and before they go off and keep record data. you should do ok lowering PH gradually. mine rises slowly too as they feed so its just maintaining. once things level off, youll get a feel for it... i think im starting to.:thumb:

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Thanks man I better get on that., thats weird though i've see the Ph testers are real cheap like the Pen style ph testers , but when I type in PPm tester, the prices went thru the roof. I just wanted to make sure if I got a ph tester, it would also represent the ppm. well thanks I.Guy, I better stop procrastinating and just get the damn thing :thanks:

Do you check all of this (except probably temp) with the same "tester"? if you do, it'd be great if maybe you could hook me up with a link or like company making it. I'd rather get one that 420 member can vouch for :thumb: thanks brah

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

The all in one testers are kinda expensive. Like I said I spent like $27 including shipping for both of mine and the all in one units are like 150-200. For now I am good with these. And like I said I got it off of Ebay. Type in PH meter or PPM meter pick what ya want...

i got mine for close to:high-five: $4o, Ph was $30, the yllow milwaukee one , an EC/PPm like $11 from ebay, doesnt even say the brand... both have worked fine... they do have multi-function units but i dont know what functions are paired in the best ones. i just went cheap so i wasnt usin the PH strips...

id get em quick for sure esp if your in water... but theyre great tools to have and once you read all about em, youll have an easier time garunteed!

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

well as it stands buckets 1-5 (all active buckets) are stable.
Buckets 1-5 for 3 days straight had a PH of 6.3-6.4 which I lowered to 5.9-6.0. The ppm was fine in all. 1 bucket ppm was 503 and that was my experiment with the nutes. I added 1ml more of parts A and B then the others. Should not have done that, its not looking so good. The other 4 buckets were 379-390 except for the largest plant and her ppm was 420 on the money... gotta love that!

I also now have 4 seeds that sprouted. I put them into rapid rooters and place them under my jump start t5s in a humidity dome. They are about ready to get out of there and in their own pots. Thats a good thing since I lost 2 of the orginal clones.

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

Above post was from yesterday Sunday 11/27...

11/28 Ok I think I finally have this dialed in...

#1 PH 6.3 lowered to 5.8, ppm 387 Good root growth thru net pots hanging into the water.
#2 PH 6.0, left alone, ppm 533 (only pot with 1ml +nutes) Good roots leaves look kinda burnt. Still new growth and happy with roots.
#3PH 6.2-6.3 left alone, ppm 522 ????? only 1 little root starting to hang down maybe 1/2".
#4PH 5.8 , ppm 398, looks great, also only 1 little root.
#5 is the last of the 3 originals. It is now 10"-12" high. It looks Great. Roots are amazing 15"-20" below the net pot. PH 6.1 PPM 411.

Room stays between 70-82 degrees. RH is a struggle. I have a pail of water and humidifier and the RH stays around 24-32 depending on if the exhaust is on or not. Air filter runs 24/7and I switch between the exhaust sucking air out and a fan blowing on the plants. And I have a spray bottle I spray them down with 2 times a day.

I will change the water in the next couple days and will add 2ml nutes to all. Last change I gave 1.5 ml to 1,3,4,5 and started with 1.5ml and added 1ml 3 days later.

Oh Ya, I made a rookie mistake. I took my 4 Lavender Kush seedlings to show the wife and kid. My wife says "Oh let me see" and grabs them and drops them, upside down on the wood floor. I freak out... many bad words... Oh and one was so new it fell out of the rapid rooter...
I took them back to their room and leaned each of them against a stick to support them. I was pissed cause they were standing up so tall and when she was done they were limp....Then she wanted to go out and see the progress....Oh HEELLLL NOO!!! I said "Sorry baby, You have the Black Thumb Of Death!!! You are NOT Allowed to go in that room....EVER!!!"

Many deep breaths and several bong hits later...... all is well.....:Namaste:

Re: Ok Noob First grow with BPN Nutes. Thanks Corey!

LOL@Insurance ....Oh I have been there! My boyfriend did that one time adjusting the lights, dropped them on top of my plants and the one plant fell. I almost fainted on the spot and had to tell myself he didn't mean it..lol...He likes working on the lights or whatever needs built. He already wants to build me a closet for them.

All this talk of ppms has me dizzy but I will go back to the beginning and catch up. I have this cheap lil thing that I put water into and some chemical, match the color to see where it is. I have been wanting to get a pen but I hear that the cheaper pens are not accurate. Anyone know? I just recently joined Ebay so I have been looking at some things on there because the garden store I go to is a bit pricey with certain things.

Its good to run across a fellow noob so I will be subbed for this one. I am sure I will learn a few things as well.
