Thanks Mr Am4zin. I'm glad I did that experiment. I spent the last ten years or so doing my cuttings in somewhat of a hurry to get them into water. Some people say you should even trim the stems underwater, after the first rough cut to get them off the plant. Glad I can skip that routine now with a clear conscience.
Although it's not good to leave them exposed to air for too long, as long as the final cut is made about 1/2" or more above the cut that was made when taking the cutting from the mother the air embolism concern should not be much of a concern.
If an air bubble does enter the stem through the original cut while sitting in the air, the air bubble should migrate upward very slowly. This doesn't mean that you should ever set cuttings on the counter then go and have lunch and watch the 2nd half of the game before returning to your cloning exercise. Just make sure to get them processed within a reasonable time frame (quicker the better) and always try to make your final diagonal cut at least 1/2" or more above the original cut.
It also helps to water the mother plant about 30 minutes before taking cuttings and try to take the cutting close to lights on time or morning if the mother is outdoors.
