Oh No - It's A Green Hole! - Reverse Thrusters! - Dammit - Too Late!

Thanks Mr Am4zin. I'm glad I did that experiment. I spent the last ten years or so doing my cuttings in somewhat of a hurry to get them into water. Some people say you should even trim the stems underwater, after the first rough cut to get them off the plant. Glad I can skip that routine now with a clear conscience.

Although it's not good to leave them exposed to air for too long, as long as the final cut is made about 1/2" or more above the cut that was made when taking the cutting from the mother the air embolism concern should not be much of a concern.

If an air bubble does enter the stem through the original cut while sitting in the air, the air bubble should migrate upward very slowly. This doesn't mean that you should ever set cuttings on the counter then go and have lunch and watch the 2nd half of the game before returning to your cloning exercise. Just make sure to get them processed within a reasonable time frame (quicker the better) and always try to make your final diagonal cut at least 1/2" or more above the original cut.

It also helps to water the mother plant about 30 minutes before taking cuttings and try to take the cutting close to lights on time or morning if the mother is outdoors.

I've found that a mix of 75% coco, 20% perlite, 5% worm castings works like a champ for both cuttings and seedlings.

I don't/didn't do any first cut/final cut routine, UncleC.
I just cut them off their mother plants, trimmed a little foliage and whatnot, and left them laying exposed for half an hour or so before dipping in rooting gel and sticking in rockwool. If there is such a thing as an air bubble issue- it's not much of a problem apparently.

I just got done reading through this entire journal in one sitting and I enjoyed every minute of it. Even with the problems you have faced i must say I still think everything looks amazingly delicious. If ya don't mind i think I'll pull up a chair and continue to watch. For being away as much as you are you sure got it together. These plants sure are complex and I learn something every day. Your grow is inspiring keep up the good work

I still scratch my head sometimes when it comes to cannabis cuttings.

Sometimes I'll doing everything text book perfect and end up with a lower than expected success rate.
Other times when topping I'll take a very small cutting (no razor blade, no rooting hormone, nothing) that I'd normally just throw away and stick it in the corner of the pot and it will root and grow to be a monster.

I'm always scratching my head over everything around here as you may have noticed. I'm going to scratch all my hair out soon and probably start ordering toupees in bulk. That's part of the reason I like this hands off cloning- that every day dome/misting business made me think I was in control and therefore responsible for everything, which I dislike. I don't really like playing god/president. A 'friendly' dictatorship ok maybe. Now I just leave them alone and if they want to die they can go ahead and die. As it was I had 100% success with the ones I left exposed (if I count the ones that I ended up culling- they all had plenty of small roots which just hadn't burst forth out of the cubes yet) and 3 deaths in the batch I did the regular way. Quemedica suggested I take a syringe and try to get an air bubble in there somehow. Maybe I'll try that next. This may be a 180 - I'll be in search of air bubbles, giving them CPR, etc.
All the best UncleC. Hope you are well, love your journal. Have any extra cookies?

Have you checked out TOAST? (lembatoast) I love the way he clones in the plastic bags. Unbelievably effective.

Too much water and the plant will never bloom to its full potential because it doesn't know its resources are limited and is continuing to put energy into green growth rather than fruit.

I know this is such basic information, but you phrased it in a way that made my brain actually pay attention to it. Thank you CC.

Thanks Lexort! I'm so happy to hear you didn't get bored to death reading through here. It does suffer from lack of time. I just visited Graytail's journal for the first time and immediately stumbled into a whole pile of pictures of the nicest plants I've yet seen on this forum. Graytail's 3rd: 4x4, HiBrix, Latest LED Tech, Lots Of Light!

It was extremely humbling. Not that I wasn't humble before. I feel very humble about my grow as it is. Not to say I don't love it dearly! This is just a seat of pants thing which I'm trying to pull off, while barely being around- working, managing a couple homes, being a parent, and never getting any sleep. The growing style isn't totally where my heart lies, I think, but I do want to try and somewhat master it, whatever it is. It is what it is for this journal. I will be switching things up once I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on how to grow better. Or when I 'get more time' ha ha ha ha ha...!!!...ha ha...

I don't know if any of you guys love Sativas, but I'm pretty entranced by them, and entranced by this thread that Conradino put together. Not all sativas- but it's made me thirsty for them. Landrace Genetics 101
My Thai Stick seedling will go into the flower room in the next month or so. I just ordered a batch of Malawi seeds from Ace Seeds, about half an hour ago.

After years of hard work and intense selections with sativas from all around the world, we can confirm that Malawi is the most powerful and psychedelic landrace sativa we know.

Its dense flowers of enormous trichomes compete with the most powerful indica/sativa and indica hybrids on the market in reference to their size and cannabinoids concentration.

The potency of their flowers is simply devastating, and it is especially recommended for experienced smokers that seek extreme sativa effects without renounce to an abundant harvest.

Resistance against SPIDER MITES: MEDIUM
Resistance against MILDEW: MEDIUM-HIGH
Resistance against BOTRYTIS: VERY HIGH
Resistance against COLD: MEDIUM

GENETICS: 100 % Malawi sativa, Central Africa. LANDRACE STRAIN
FLOWERING: 11-14 weeks. Late October / Early November.
STRUCTURE: Sativa of medium internodes and strong branching.
YIELD / M2: Medium-High
BOUQUET: Strong, concentrated aroma of oil, wood and lemon.
HIGH: Extraordinarily powerful, intense and psychedelic, with more than 4 hours of duration. Only recommended for hard and experienced smokers.

I'm pretty sure I don't qualify as a "Hard and experienced smoker" but WTF!

I haven't Sue. I heard you mention him a bunch today over on your journal, but couldn't figure out who Toast was. Graytail's journal has stretched my horizons painfully and I don't know how much more I can handle tonight but I'll check lembatoast out tomorrow. :)

Subbed :tokin:

Wease, take my word for it. He's the best journal on the site. I give you my word. Cut mine. Pick up his and I'll be ok with that. Don't miss this opportunity. Seriously.

Look, Conradino will probably back me up here.

Did you catch how good his journal is? Yeah, it's better than that. I should be there now, but I'm terribly fond of you and you caught my eye. :laughtwo:

But since I just finished that coffee and sleep will wait, I'm going there now. :ciao:

I would like to grow a strain that would help with pain. One main reason I don't sleep at night. If anyone knows a good one let me know.
On that note I suppose I should try to sleep a little.

Geez I talk a lot...

Goodnight 420 friends.

Hey WC, finally getting a chance to catch up on your journal (couple weeks later than intended LOL) I am relatively new to the grow and smoking as you know, but of the 2 strains I have finished inside, I find the THC Bomb works well for pain and allowing me to sleep through the night pain free. Something I haven't done in years and I haven't taken prescription meds in weeks now :) I pack my pipe and smoke a bowl 1/2hr to 1hr before I want to go to sleep and within 10-15mins the pain eases and within an hour I go to sleep.

I even use it through the day when I need pain relief but I use a dry herb vaporizer through the day on the low temperature setting, take 2-3 pulls and again the pain eases within a few minutes but doesn't make me sleepy :)

I have 4 Bomb strains outside, that will start to be harvested when I get home the end of the month, to try as well :)

Hah! I've seen a few grows of this "Malawi" strain and was interested, but I hadn't seen that description yet! I actually got the name stuck in my head the other day and caught myself saying "Malawi" at random stuff... Destiny!? I may have to give this strain a try, as I too look forward to nice sativas. Plus I've only grown 8 week flowering strains, so it would teach me some more patience!

You always have such good off-topic info through your journal!

Clone domes and misting has often led to powdery mildew and/or damping off situations in my experience so I don't mess about with either anymore. However, I'm sure that my failures with these two methods was due to mistakes made on my part and not due to shortcomings with the methodology.

Like you, I just want to facilitate what's needed to get them going then just add water.
I've made some grow medium, lighting, and RH/temp adjustments that when combined have made a big difference in my overall success rate.
Thanks to your experiment I won't feel so damned rushed anymore when working with cuttings as I have in the past.
I'm somewhat of a mellow gardener so the whole hurry up thing with cuttings was always something I've disliked. Now I can take a bong hit break here and there between task and not feel like I'm committing clone manslaughter.

Keep up the cool experiments bro!
:welldone::high-five:

:goodjob: glad to see you got a journal

mate ill catch up proper soon , have had a couple of deaths lately , ( friends ) ..

Sorry to hear that Nutty! If you need anything were here for you!
