NorthernCosmos' First Indoor Soil Auto Grow: 2019

Day 42. The pots were light and dry again, more than ever... I mixed 1ml each of AN Grow/Bloom, 1.5ml AN Micro, 1ml AN BigBud, 1ml VL Root-Stim, 0.5g Espom salt pr liter. So around 1/3 dose of nutes in all. The plants got a liter each. I also snipped off a few "autumn leaves".

They're getting thirstier all the time. At this rate it looks like each plant needs 1l every other day, and I suppose that will only increase. They've gotten dry enough that I'd call it a proper wet/dry cycle the last 3 feedings.

I've also started a Stardawg auto from Fast Buds and an AK420 auto from Seed Stockers. They're getting germinated in the same soil mix as the Amnesia and White Widow - that's 4 parts pre-nuted peat based soil, 2 parts live compost, 1 part crushed clay pebbles.

So now that planned overlapping grow is initiated. The plan is to have harvests coming thick and fast, and to be on the fast train of growing experience and strain sampling :)

Edit: In the tent picture below, there are jam glasses over each seed. That worked fine for the first two plants. However, there seem to be a majority(?) of opinion stating that seeds should be kept dark until sprouting (which is not how it happens in nature...). Any advice/opinins on this?

It's getting crowded in the tent with the two new ones. Here's a shot of all the sisters, from left:

About the water here: it's pumped from a 120 meters deep well in sand, maybe some rock - this is what's left after a few fillings of a humididfier bowl. There has been talk about possible calcium deficiency, but this water is very rich in calcium (and other minerals I presume)...

Lol I think you are in for a surprise when they get bigger. :)

Great! I've been doing this from on and off for 15 years now and I still learn new stuff about this plant and indoor gardening. So your in it for life from now on. ;)

I only have an el cheapo PH meter - one of those green blobs with two spear probes. Today's wet soil mix came out at ca. 6.8. I even added a little bit of lemon juice to the water as an experiment , probably too little to have much effect. The water by itself is ca. 7.0. I like to aim for 6.8 in the wet soil for comfort. I know the meter is probably inaccurate, but it says 7.0 for the plain water, and moves downwards as I add lemon juice... so a ballpark meter then... at best. I may get a better meter later. Do I really need to monitor EC?

The Advanced Nutrients I'm using is the "pH perfect" line... (yeah, yeah... marketing).

And yes, I'm planning on keeping growing for as long as I can - I like plants, I like the process, and I sure like the kind of produce we're looking at here ;)

Hey, we all start with what we got!

The good thing with an EC meter is that you can monitor precisely what you pour in to the water and see what it does with the conductivity. A water can contain much "base" stuff and get very saturated by different combinations of grow enhancers. The risk with not knowing this is you can easily over do a product which your water already contain. When always seeking the knife's edge in how much you can put in to your water its a must. But don't worry about that yet, the reason I asked was I thought you had very many additives. The less bottles there are to mix the easier this process is and less prone to make mistakes.

You are doing great! :hippy:

Day 46. Wren has broken the 30cm barrier, with Ada still at a more modest 23cm. However, Ada has started forming proper colas, and... wait for it... trichomes on every bud:snowboating:

Oh yea, and the AK420 has popped; been up and about for two days. Still waiting for the Stardawg...

The last got a feeding on day 44 with a very modest amount of nutes, around 1/6. I'll let the pots dry out a tad more, and tomorrow it's feeding. It's clear now that the two plants Amnesia and White Widow reacts differently to the nutes/conditions.

Wren the Widow looks reasonably healthy, and will get a good dose of nutes.

Ada the Amnesia is a wee bit scruffier, with what still looks a little Mg def (slight yellowing concentrated around the veins) and possibly the Ca def (a few rusty spots). Doesn't look critical, but I'm thinking about giving her mainly a Cal-Mag treatment for tomorrows feeding. I've cooked up some eggshell water and will mix in a little Epsom salt, VL Root-Stim (sea weed) and AN Big Buds. Or what do the gurus think - considering that the trichomes are all over it now?

Day 48. They got a mild nute feed yesterday; the Amnesia skewed more towards eggshell/Epsom water that the White Widow. However, the discolouration on the leaves continues to develop.

Using these charts, it looks a little like potassium deficiency on the Amnesia, perhaps. It's harder to match up the White Widow with any charts - Mg def. perhaps?

I'm not sure where to go from here. Perhaps they really need more nutes, potential Ca lockout be damned? I'm also not sure how long the delays between cause and affect are. Such delays can cause PIO (Pilot Indiced Oscillations) in real life, which I think may be applicable here in a way...

Brown "burns" on the tips and "teeth" for the Amnesia:

A little bit different on the White Widow with some lighter colours and some brown on the tips:

On the bright side - the trichomes are showing on the White Widow too :

I would say that the light colors I am seeing along with the identifiable deficiency, indicates that a light feeding was not appropriate. Increase the nutes to the recommended amounts and lets see what changes.

Yes, I think I'll try max recommended dose tomorrow and see what happens. I'm actually very late with the ramping up according to the nute chart (bottom of page). There is so much written about how autos should have only tiny amounts of nutes that I've been very unsure about this. But I'll listen to you guys first, my own instincts and what the plants "say" (slowly learning, I hope), and I'm now inclined to give them get a real good feeding the next few times.

Seeing the trichomes on both is a delight! I just ordered some nice hemp rolling papers and a grinder, in preparation for the first harvest. I basically only vape these days, but I've found that pure flowers in a thin hemp paper is pretty easy on the throat and lungs (well, at least it feels like it is), so I shall indulge a little for the flavours and tradition...
:blunt:

I chose autos to get a soft start, but could it be that it's not so soft after all, having to be right on the ball, with little time for corrections(?) I'll try my hand at photos as soon as I get another tent going. I'd be using the current tent for a couple of autos and a couple of photos in veg, then move the photos to that other tent for flowering. It may be a while before it happens (a budget thing), but I'm planning for it.

Edit: re. oil : Sounds interesting, but also another layer of complexity at this point. It's not that I don't like to smoke - I do - but I can't take the effects of smoke without quite adverse effects anymore. I'll look into how oil is made and used, but I'm also happy with vaping :thumb:

Problem is the details. New growers today buy a stock pile of nutrients and additives from start. Heck my 10 first plants I just grew in household dirt and moms orchid nutes the last weeks of flowers. It's no easy way to dial in a nute program, first of all you need to know exactly what water you are giving them this mix in and keep track of this. :hmmmm::cheesygrinsmiley:

Here is a link to my last batch of oil <- :blunt:

Ahh, that kind of oil! I've been reading about your coco infusion adventures in the fog :) When you first said oil, I was thinking of "dabbing" which I know nothing about. I'm definitely going to try some edibles once I have enough harvest that I feel I can risk some experiments. Made some pancakes with generous amounts of hash many years ago, and they "worked" for sure.

Edit to add: This isn't actullay my very first grow, I once grew a plant in the green house, in plain gardening soil. It got water and was otherwise left to its own devices. It turned out fine, although I now know that I harvested it too early. So yeah, could be that the nute regimes just makes things harder :laughtwo: One of these days I might do a controlled experiment: one plant in a soil mix with some good compost in it which will only get water, and one with a nute regime. Again, this will be when I have a buffer of buds to make me comfortable with some losses to experimentation (However, could it be that I'm really doing the experimentation now... :hmmmm::oops:o_O:laughtwo:)
