NorthernCosmos' First Indoor Soil Auto Grow: 2019

seeds should be kept dark until sprouting (which is not how it happens in nature...). Any advice/opinins on this?
Nonsense! They should see the sun the second they break ground :).
There is so much written about how autos should have only tiny amounts of nutes that I've been very unsure about this.
Feh. It's a cannabis plant and should be fed like any other.
I just ordered some nice hemp rolling papers and a grinder,
:yahoo:
I chose autos to get a soft start, but could it be that it's not so soft after all, having to be right on the ball, with little time for corrections
I did the same thing, and looking back on it I wouldn't recommend it for those exact reasons.

Day 49. Nute mix of 3ml AN Micro/Grow/Bloom, 1.5ml AN BigBuds, 1.5ml VL Root-Stim and 0.5g Epsom salt per liter. They got 1 liter each (lots of numbers again - that doesn't mean I have even a clue :laughtwo:). Snipped off a few half dried leaves on the lower parts.

OK, that's 3/4 strength nutes, I didn't dare go 1/1 (ramping up is a thing, right?). It'll be interesting to see how the new growth is doing in a couple of days.

The Ak420 at day 8 (5 above the soil) is a bit small, but I forgot to put the seed in water, so maybe that adds a little time.

Handling the plants now gives off a nice smell and leaves me with sticky fingers :yummy:

Since I mentioned it, here is that AK420 at day 8, dry seed straight into the soil. 9V battery for size comparison. I also started her under a black lid, so she was germinating in the dark and spent almost a day above the soil in darkness... I thought she was a bit stretchy when I found her under the lid, so I planted her a cm deeper then.

I also started a Stardawg at the same time, under a dark lid. When I didn't see anything at day 6, I looked through the soil and found nothing. I then started a new Stardawg (seed in water first, and no dark lid). Then I found the original Stardawg lying on top of the soil, with a tiny root exposed, so I had to plant it again in its own pot. I've got a right clown car going now, with 5 plants in my 2x4 tent... and there are 4 strains to manage - I'll be busy :goof:

Day 52. Dry and light pots. Roughly same nute mix as day 49. 1.25l per plant. New growth looks healthy. Seems to go steady with 1l per plant per 2 days. Not much new to report, which is a good thing, I think.

Those Stardawg autos from Fast Buds are slow though - still nothing above the soil on day 11 and 6 for the two seeds...

I have used empty glass-jars as micro greenhouses previously, with great success. There's 25 - 26 degrees C in the tent, which hopefully is warm enough.

As for more plants, I'm one inch away from throwing out those expensive non-germinating Stardawgs now. Don't want to waste space and time on that. I'll give them until monday - if I don't see anything then, they're gone to give room for semething else (BCN Critical, more Amnesia or something like that) .

Ah I remember now! That was a cool way to make a green house, think I been taking that oil to much for a while... :cheesygrinsmiley:

Get some cheap seeds. I order all my seeds at sweseeds, usually get the Bulk seed brand and get 5 fem seeds for like under 20$ there sometimes even cheaper. Learn how to grow and then buy the more expensive kinds, winter here can be a nightmare to getting them to germinate sometimes. If its been in soil for more than 10days I would toss them out.

The ones I (and a friend) have success with are the dirt cheap ones from where I ordered, at ca. $12 for 5 auto fems, and I have enough of those to last me a while (Seed Stockers brand). Makes it all the more disappointing that the fancy expensive 'bestselling' seeds at 4 times that price, are going nowhere. I'll check out sweseeds, but this made me a bit wary of ordering from so close to home IYSWIM (even though they're apparently "Luxury bird seeds" :laughtwo:).

I've just finished up things outdoors for the winter, and that included fetching a couple of buckets of prime compost before it all freeze up. Everything is ready for a long winter of continuous overlapping grows now :)

I hear ya Cs

It's easy to get ripped of with expensive seeds, by the weight of the seeds its even more expensive than gold or smack.
SweSeeds are very discrete and come directly in the postbox in unmarked letters so I think its the safest ways to order seeds here. When I started growing me and my friends ordered seeds from the one and only headshop online www.everyonedoesit.com but back then we had a working customs agency and they intercepted the letters and smashed the seeds and wrote "innehåller narkotiska fröer" on the letter. You should seen the cashiers look on her face when handing over the letter.

Think Shed uses a heatmat for his seedlings during winter months. But always stock up on seeds, I also need to order some more strains... :)

Day 55. Dry and very light pots. Maybe I should've fed them yesterday. Tiny increase in nutes from day 55, but still around 3/4.

Some mood pics from life in the tent below. Not a lot of exciting changes, I'm afraid - I wish the plants grew a bit more dramatically to make this journal less dull...

AK420 at day 14, coming nicely along. No nutes yet, just a little bit of water:

The White Widow. She refuses to grow any taller it seems... at 34cm now:

The Amnesia. She's also seems to have reached her preferred height:

Amnesia, yum-yum. Looking forward to a taste of that :yummy: :

Your journal contains lots of exciting moment when you show progress in your closet. They look more and more yummy both Amnesia and Widow. Widow was for many years my strain of choice, always in some stage in my tent. I would try full blast with nutes next watering. They will need it for last push, from there leaves will get yellow and brown nothing wrong in that. The plant is getting ready to hand over her fruits...

Keep it coming Cosmo!

I think my plants are afflicted with some pests - possibly root aphids

There's a dedicated thread over here:

OK... Thanks to the good folks on the 420 forums I've got confirmation that it's indeed root aphids and possibly fungus gnats too, and also advice on how to get rid of them. Diatomaceous Earth has been ordered to combat the monsters.

So what do you guys reckon, could it be the cause of the short stature of the plants and those bottom drying yellow/brown leaves that I've had? If so, perhaps the next round of the same seeds will produce larger plants like I've seen elsewhere.

Since these pests are almost guaranteed to have come with the compost from my garden, I'm now getting cold feet w.r.t. continuing to use it. Of course I could take preventive measures, like using Diatomaceous Earth from the start and also a sand cover on top of the soil. However, I don't yet know enough about this to proceed with confidence. Should I toss the compost and go with just the peat soil mix that I can get around here (light and dark peat, sand, lime and NPK)? Any advice will be appreciated.

Well, if nothing else this may have brought some excitement to the journal :p A little too much of it on my part maybe, but also a valuable lesson.

Haha, yes, I don't want any explosions due to experimental methods :laughtwo: However, if I stir and sift the soil first I think it should be safe. The downside would that it'd kill the earth worms, but I could pick those out of the the soil before zapping it. Even if the compost itself was dry the bugs are not, and they would be direct targets. I think I'll try this.
