New City Grower 2.0

Out here on the island, the town gives away free organic compost; the NYC dept of sanitation also does this; the link:
NYCWasteLess: Compost Giveback Program
Thanxx Jam. I was dead on top of that one. I went directly to the link as soon as I read your post. Unfortunately, In 2009 the program was closed due to lack of city funding. It's almost like every week since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office I'm finding out about something else for the people of NYC that Bloomberg shutdown.
I believe that's what I had before. A friend of mines works for the Dept. of Parks & Recreation had given me a big bag of NYC compost but I wouldn't ask him again as he said they're not suppose to use any Parks & Recreation material for personal use. I'd hate to be the one to cause him to lose his job. It would be great if he was to ask me if I needed anymore though as I've noticed they've been doing a lot of planting around the city these last few weeks.

Reggie, you want this soil for what use? Peat moss in bales is cheaper than coir by far. You can buy a compacted bale of 3.4 cubic feet for under ten or around ten at Home Depot or Lowes or Kmart etc. It is inert and has a very low pH.

Are you wanting to grow cannabis in this soil?
You already know Brooklyn. I'm not growing anything other than the Almighty Cannabis. PJ already tried his best to talk me into growing other things to no avail. Could I use peat moss alone and just add my nutrients or is there more to it than that?

I would say to even rent a car and take a ride out on Long Island to a garden center and see what they all have out there for you. Nice day trip, but do NOT drive back into the city any time on a Sunday! Hampton Jitney :)
Yeah, I know from beach trips but it's all part the experience. We usually go to one of the great inexpensive Seafood Restaurants after the beach to kill time before getting back on the L.I.E.. I'll do a little research & try to find where to get NYC Compost these days. I'm sure the Dept. of Sanitation is creating more than the the Dept. of Parks & Recreation can use. We don't start going to the beach until June. That will be the soonest I head out to Long Island.

OK; This is an all out mandatory attendance Show! The 12th episode of THE REPS ARE RIGHT will happen here on this thread (that's right, I said here on this thread. I don't want to hear about you couldn't find it) this Sunday, May 11, 2014 at 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. Put all your mediocre excuse in the compost bin. I know the whole 420 was slow during the last episode but there's no excuse for having nearly as many TRAR team members as there were participants.
It is 1:30 PM EST at the time of this post so however many hours the time difference is for you , adjust accordingly.

Well, I wouldn't only use peat moss as a growing medium. It's okay temporarily, but not the full grow. Years ago Cornell University had a really great recipe for potting mix. Do you want me to see if I can find it, or did you just want really simple?

I would say peat moss would be an excellent thing to cut your progrow mixes with to bulk it up. That you can definitely do. Make the FF or which ever you like into more by adding peat moss.

BAR,

I have said this to you before in private, but I figured make it public so others could chime in and let the admins/site owner know a weakness in their site....

I would love to join 'the Reps are Right' more often, but I find it an exercise in futility trying to keep up/keep it organized when it in the format of a forum.

420magazine.com should look into something that would make activites like this easier for the user, like a chat room or something. Many other sites have these set up so one would think it would more or less be a turnkey type of thing if they have the server infrastructure and find the software that does chat rooms.

Maybe if we as a user base would make more noise for something like this, they might do it :)

Thanxx so much Brooklyn. I've already said this once; I think I've forgotten over 1/3 of what I've learned since becoming a 420 member. I already knew that. :reading420magazine: LOL...
One of my High School English teachers use to say; "Do not say you don't know, say you do not recall because we've already been over this and you were present that day".
I'll be picking up peat moss this week.

And on that same note, as I went through troubleshooting the problems in my Bloom Tent...

When using a LED light source additional calcium and magnesium must be supplemented. I would purchase a calcium and magnesium supplement and use at 5 millilitres per gallon.
Though this was from another journal...
The exact things I came up with after doing some of what I consider my best research efforts in years. The Fox Farm GROW BIG I've been force feeding them is a good natural nute for Phosphorous and you know what I've done for the Cal/Mag.
Not surprising that Judge John had summed it up in 50 words.

Thanxx Colorado Slim.

Ahahaha, so you're gonna cut your good stuff with peat? Cool! I do that all the time.

One last note; peat moss can be very dusty and hard to break up when really very dry. If it is very dry, bring it up to the roof or on the fire escape and keep pouring very warm water into the bag, slowly. Let it sit for a while and if it still won't break apart easily, add more water. Try not to inhale the dust. It can hold mold spores in it, but nothing which will harm plants.

Have a blast.

Thanxx for the tip Brooklyn.

Just a fast drive bye. I shot back acouple pages to see how the little girl was starting to look. She's going to be a tight little bush. I'll say that for sure. Not sure how big you plan on letting her get but you opened the canopy that's for sure. I'm kind of the other way myself. I don't take sun leaves until they block out the bud sites or I'm lolly popping. But then I'm using a light rail, or outdoors. I got to say those rails are worth there weight if you got enough space. I mean I know there is a time for everything, and a lot of situations might dictate defoliating. But anyways she's starting to bush out for ya. Keepem Green

Very nice. Short and wide is always my preference

Peat moss has a very low PH about 4.5 you will need to add some dolomite lime to raise the PH I use 1/3 a cup to 5 gallons of peat moss
(for what it's worth) then you can add the nutrients you want to use and not have to worry about other additives in the mix.
So Harley, you're saying that after adding dolomite lime I could use peat moss without adding any other medium to the soil?

I used to use just peat moss, but when it dries out it's annoying to water. I like to use a potting mix with a 1:1 ratio of peat moss to compost.

I don't buy perlite or vermiculite because that stuff just floats to the top anyway.

My soilless mix also has a wetting agent, something KJC has not used before, so I'm hoping that helps with any watering issues.

if you have a tray under the plant it solves the issue, but you have to spend more time sitting there waiting for the plant to soak up the water.
