My1stGro - New Member & Grower Journey Journal

Hi My1stGro,

Looking good so far, I pretty much agree with most of the comments on here (for whatever that's worth! haha). You definitely need more umm.....stuff. More of everything would be good but at least;

- more light
- more air flow
- more space
- much more light!

Well you will need it eventually any way (probably sooner than you think, this stuff grows..well like a weed!). Best to prepare now if you want to take them to their fully mature flowering glory.

The hardest decision is probably the lighting. Everyone has their own preference I guess. Dutty and LightAddict's statements before are both spot on.

Hid out performs Led period

Its all about suitability for the space etc.
(I would also add cost in $$'s per watt as well)

HID is almost certainly better at the moment for those who want the biggest yield from the same investment in lights. Sure a $2000 LED system can outperform a $400 HPS. But $2000 worth of HID would absolutely blow away $2000 worth of LED.

The big downside of HID is they are (relative to LED) bulky, somewhat inefficient (balanced out by the overall higher wattage) and generate a great deal of heat which has to be dealt with (air-cooled hood or some other decent cooling/extraction system).

I think if money was no problem I would definitely be using LED's for supplemental lighting, to a massive HPS. Although I live in a world where money does matter so I use a 600W HPS and 200W of CFL for supplemental/side lighting because it produces a metric assload of light at a reasonable cost.

The only reason I would use LED only (or with some CFL supplementation) is if I was growing in a very small space and I simply could not deal with the heat generation and cooling requirements of running HID.

But like everyone says, this is just my opinion and would encourage further reading on such a controversial topic. LED v HID is an ongoing and evolving debate and everyone has an opinion. Ultimately you only need to figure out what is best for YOU in YOUR setup, don't worry too much about what everyone else thinks, do your own research and find something that works for you. That's part of the fun of this hobby, no two grows are the same and it takes some experimenting and mistakes to get your space 'dialled in' as they say.

Hope it grows well! :Namaste:

What makes HID a no-go for me, is the heat management and utility bill. I need to grow in a small space that heats up quick, and in the summer will be hot anyway. So in order for me to run a HID, I would need an airco. An airco would also bring in the need for a humidifier, and I would need to run an extra fan for HID cooling. This alone makes it more attractive to run LED for me, even tho the initial purchase cost is quite high.

I did some ballpark calculations, and the difference in wattage used for LED vs HID is a lot. I can run 2 to 3 LED setups for the cost of 1 HID. (600w HID)

I will be spending about 6x the amount of a HID + ballast, for a good LED. Power savings alone make up for that over it's lifetime.

The only issue is, with LED, you need to train your plants, as light penetration is not comparable to the HID. So you have more work on your plants. Therefore, if you plan on cramming a 10m x 10m space full of plants and lights, HID is the way to go ... as noone wants to train 10x10m of plants.

I agree that led is good for
Tiny ass grows
Can't have heat
Need to be stealth

But for high testing, high yielding, cup placing, medicine I'll always be using hid. Hortilux and lumatek for the win. Literally

I have used led for supplemental lightning
I've also used it for a clone box once but the Lil girls liked the ho t5 better.

OK firstly lol I don't think we need to get into the hps versus LED bit here :). Its all about suitability for the space etc. Hps is a great way to go if you cant afford to get the better topflight LED's. Im very lucky to run the best top end LED's and can say they destroy hps without a hesitation. Thats just my humble experience though! :)

LA your training is amazing but led can't blow it away on a commercial scale. I've recently dismantled a legal grow here this was the 7th legal 502 grow that spent 10 of thousands up wards of 100,000$ in led. After not getting the yields every single one went back to either hps or hps with mh in bloom.
I'm all for led if it was 100% there. Ive seen led straight stop grow ops in there tracks period.

If anyone on this forum doubts me look up clima grow here in Washington state. I consult and design at times. They have built multiple 50,000+ Sq feet room and zero are led. Some were but aren't now.

However in 17 years in this business light addict has some of the best training I've seen.
I assume led forced those skills though.

Lol I won all my titles etc under a 400 hps in an alcove with a oil painting canvas as a door :)
I've ran hps, cfl and now LED. I'm lucky to run Budmaster lights and the GOD series clusters do indeed slay hps with ease!!
If anyone doubts just check the PAR readings and charts and all the open info they post up.
The Osrams of the GOD level simply put any other leds I've seen to shame (including other lower BM lights) :)

I like the science that's there to back up LED. Whether or not a specific model meets those standards is still questionable but PAR is a proven form or measuring light absorption by plants. And given how far they have come in just the last 5 years I wouldn't be surprised if led becomes the new hid in the near future. For those who use hid's, if it ain't broke dont fix it. Same goes with cfls and led :allgood:

I APPLIED NUTES TO 4 OF THEM AND THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SOME PRETTY FUNKY SHIT... FIRST I APPLIED THE EXACT MEASUREMENTS ON THE INSTRUCTIONS 1tsp PER GALLON OF WATER TO 2 OF THE PLANTS THEN I RAN THE NUTE'S HOT TO 4tsp PER GALLON ON THE OTHER 2... THE BIGGEST BABY WHICH IS THE OLDEST I HAD HER IN MY ROOM FOR A WEEK BEFORE I BUILT MY GROW BOX AND NOW THIS IS HER 1ST WEEK IN THE GROW BOX AND I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BUT ANYWAY I HAVE JUST BEEN WATERING WITH REGULAR WATER BECAUSE AT THE BEGINNING SHE HAD NUTE BURN BECAUSE OF MIRACLE GROW SO I HAD TO FLUSH AND SHE SEEMS TO BE BOUNCING BACK AND DOING OK >> SOME STUFF IS HAPPENING IN BETWEEN THE LEAFS AND STEM NOT SURE BUT THIS IS THE BEST PICTURE I HAVE SO FAR >

absolutely this is my first time growing i only have 2 cfl's and they seem to be doing ok once i bump the nute's and get a shit load of lights and build a better ventilated grow box lets see and i will be applying @lightaddicts fluxing method cant wait!!

Hey guys! My1stgro here they all seem to still have those little round leaves at the bottom and the biggest baby starting to show 5 finger leaves to excited!!

..except for the nuteburn at the tips. Go easy with nutes in the beginning m8 .. 1/4 strength is more then enough till they are in their next container ;) They are babies now .. babies do not eat steaks :p

Hi 1stgro, how's it growing?

Your little ones look fine, maybe slightly crisp. Leaves look a little bit 'cupped' or dry. My guess would be either your lights got a little close (given how close you are meant to keep CFL and how often you have to move them this is no surprise), or your box could use a bit more air flow/cooling.

When your lights have been running for a while put your hand under them in the box at the plant height. The general rule is that if it is too warm to comfortably keep your hand there all day it's probably too warm for the plants.

If your plants are showing mild signs of heat stress (aside from adding more cooling obviously) you can also use diluted seaweed or kelp extract as a foliar spray and in the waterings to alleviate some of the symptoms.

I am a big kelp mix/seaweed convert, I grow in hot weather and this stuff is an excellent additive. If you like to believe what manufacturers write on packets they say;

[**Brand of product**] is not, by definition, a fertiliser (as it contains only marginal nitrogen and phosphorus levels). [*Brand*] seaweed concentrate is a complete garden health treatment that contains plant nutrients, trace elements, alginic acid and other bioactive compounds. [*Brand*] promotes healthy roots, encourages beneficial soil micro-organisms, stimulates flowering and fruiting and helps plants to cope with stresses like heat, drought, frost and pest and disease attack.

Also it doesn't hurt that where I live this stuff is super cheap, less than ten dollars for a bottle that will last me a year. I wouldn't recommend blindly accepting the manufacturer's claims, but if you search for something like "liquid kelp + heat stress" you should find some proper research to back it up.

Here is a tidbit of science I found;

Betaines in Kelp increase chlorophyll content and consequently photosynthesis, cytokinins induce heat tolerance, increase potassium
uptake and improve root growth , while antioxidants in Kelp help plants in temperature extremes (Khan, 2009).

Subscribed. I began growing in Miracle Gro soil and had many problems with the cannabis plants myself, I now use peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and mycorrhizae for my soiless mixture and use General Hydroponics Flora series 3 part nutrients. I recommend you place your Compact Florescent Light bulbs 5"-6" from your plants. What size area do you plan to use for your plants in vegetative growth and for flower?

Here is my soiless mixture

I use peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and mycorrhizae and bacteria for my plants. I would mix your soiless mixture in a ratio of 60% peat moss, 20% perlite and 20% vermiculite. If you can get Pro-Mix HP you would only need to add 20% vermiculite and mycorrhizae. Vermiculite acts as a catalyst between nutrients and the plants roots as well as retaining moisture.

PRO-MIX_HP_MYCORRHIZAE.jpg

PRO-MIX HP Mycorrhizae - High porosity peat-based growing medium

Hydro-organics Earth juice rooters mycorrhizae

Pro-Mix HP has 1 species of mycorrhizae added, I add 10 others species of mycorrhizae and more of the strain already contained in Pro-Mix HP. When I transplant my plants to larger size pots I use 1 teaspoon per 1 gallon size pot and 2-3 teaspoons per 3 gallon size pot of additional mycorrhizae granules.

I use General Hydroponics Flora series 3 part nutrients that can be mixed for all stages of vegetative growth and flowering. General Hydroponics Flora series can be used with hydroponic, soil and soiless mediums.

If you are looking to increase trichome production I use 3 products that have worked very well for me in flowering.

I use Snow Storm Ultra as a foliar spray at 1.25 milliliters per liter in flower every 7-10 days and discontinue use 1 week before harvest.

I will only spray Snow Storm Ultra just before the lights go off for the darkness phase of flowering.

I also use General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom and KoolBloom Dry in flower.

I use General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom at 2.5 milliliters per gallon from the start of flower until 3 weeks prior to harvest then use General Hydroponics KoolBloom Dry for 2 weeks at 1/4 teaspoon or 1.25 milliliters per gallon and discontinue use to begin a harvest flush from 7-10 days.

You can see these products in use and the results in my KingJohnC's Lush Lighting LED Dominator 2x Soil Indoor Grow Journal and Review.

I use Active Eye Growroom Glasses to protect my eyesight from damage from the Ultra Violet and Infra Red wavelengths in the light emitted by grow room lighting. I originally purchased the Active Eye Growroom Glasses to protect my eyesight from damage from the Ultra Violet and Infra Red wavelengths in the light emitted by High Pressure Sodium lights I use for flowering. I have found the Active Eye Growroom Glasses will also protect your eyesight from Ultra Violet and Infra Red LED light from the LED light panels as well. The grey lens should be used with LED light panels as the blue wavelengths are the most damaging to eyesight.

I have a much different understanding of defoliation applied at the proper time line to enhance vegetative growth and flowering. You can see examples of how I defoliate and train my plants in my Grow Journals and Reviews. I would defoliate in vegetative growth 10-14 days before flowering to remove excess fan leaves and open more light to branches and nodes that become bud sites and colas. I defoliate in vegetative growth by removing any fan leaves that are excessively shading the branches and nodes to encourage the nodes to grow larger and produce more colas. I use Low Stress Training to tie the branches of my plants to the outer edge of the rim of the pots and each branch becomes its own bud site and cola. When I defoliate in preparation for flower I leave no more then 4 fan leaves at each growing top and remove the majority of the fan leaves, any fan leaf that shades a top and lower growth, this is a perfect time to select cuttings to root as clones from the plants you are about to place into flower. I defoliate in flower at days 21-25 of flower when the stretch phase has ended by removing lower growth that will not produce anything except for popcorn bud and any fan leaf that shades a bud site and again if required at day 45.

There is a good example of how I defoliate in this Grow Journal and Review

:goodjob: I see you found a nutrient line and have a ph tester on the way so it looks like your well on your way. They look healthy and are growing at a good pace. Only thing I would suggest is a little more airflow. A few leaves looked pretty hot. When leaves curl up on the sides the're most likely too hot. Point a fan directly at the bulbs to help dissipate the heat and you should be fine. Make sure your box is able to intake fresh air too, it'll help with heat and plant growth.
Keep it up:peace:

Your humidity appears to be low, you can boil off large pots of water to raise the humidity in your building. You want 70°-90° Fahrenheit and 50%-70 % humidity for vegetative growth and 30%-50% humidity for flower.
