My First Journal: GG#4 In DWC & Soil

Got her opened up today. Tied her down in 6 different spots and clipped a few leaves off. Going to let her grow in a bit and see how she looks in a couple weeks.

Off to a good start
Thanks! Tomorrow is her res change so she should respond just fine to the training. Hoping she fills in really well. Even though the stems are thicker, they seem a little less prone to snapping as to soil plants. At least that's how it felt with me on the plant.

Dropping the one Love Potion #69 into soil today. Her taproot is a little shorter then I like it to be prior to planting but she will grow in just fine. Pics to come.

The stems are noticeably thicker. From the plants that I have grown so far in DWC the stems get rigid and thick quickly and thus break before you know it. Ase has a good system of gently massaging the stems as they are growing to keep them pliable for when you are tying them down. Last grow I snapped a main when the plant was young. This time I snapped another one further up the plant. I almost have to use the super cropping technique on them where you gently squish the area that you want to bend by rolling your thumb and forefinger over it to soften the stem.

As Penny stated you are off to a great start with her. Like I mentioned in an earlier post when you flip her she will gain a lot in size. DWC is adictive and I think that it is way easier than soil or even coco. You're donig a great job growing her. The rest of your grow looks healthy as well. This should be a killer grow for you.

Thank you. I love the grow so much that I am already building a 4 site system. I also am upgrading the size of the tent that they will be in as well. It makes me look back at all my old grows and think of all the time I wasted in soil where I could have grown a much larger plant in DWC with the same amount of time. I havent cut holes in the buckets yet though because I am still pondering on how I want to do them. There's so many different variations out there....just looking for the best I think will fit me and what would make life easier. All the plants are coming along great so hopefully that continues right to the end of the grow.

The DWC plant has responded well to her training yesterday. I did a res change today and added the Z7 as well. I was going to add the new nutrients but since she is growing well, I am finishing this grow with the current nutrients. I just don't want anything going wrong jumping from one brand to another mid grow. At least I'll have them for when I start my next grow with my system being built.

Soil GG#4 has been eating fine. In this picture she was just feed, hence the slight drooping of the leaves. I'll be getting her opened up today as well. Overall both plants are healthy.

I didn't get a chance to train the soil plant yesterday. It had taken her a little longer then usual to bounce back from her feed yesterday. It was kind of expected though as I did take extra time with the watering instead of just quick floods. Just wanted to make sure the soil was evenly saturated. She is back to being perky this morning so today I will get in there and open her up. I'll remove a nice portion of leaves too. Just as the DWC plant, I'll give her a good week or two to see what else needs to be done to get her ready for flowering. Normally, I leave larf there for when I make butter etc but everything will be lollipopped prior to flipping. I'll get some pictures up today to show you how she looks post LST. Stay safe everyone.

So the DWC plant looked a tad droopy about an hour prior to the lights going out. Something I will be watching closely. No changes in temps or anything. Assuming it's on a schedule? Were see in the morning. Soil plant was trained today but I didn't get a picture before the lights went off. I still need to get my other plants in veg trained as well. Little behind recently but I'll get everything in order in the next day or two. Love Potion #69 has also broken ground today as well.

Congrats on the new baby can't wait to see a pic!
The droopy look to the plant is nothing to worry about , I've had plants do that before lights out it's like they know the dark period is coming.

Yea I figured that's what it is but just noting it. I know the leaves move a ton throughout the day so not really worried. The baby that just popped is just a little tester for my next run as I am doing an 8 plant Love Potion #69 run. Working on my new sysyem too so I'll have that ready for that run. Exciting times lol.

It's official your hooked on hydro lol.
Seeing how well and fast they grow compared to soil...its like whats the point of using soil anymore lol. I am sure I'll still use dirt here and there but yea hydro is the way to go for me.

So here is the droop I was talking about. My light just came on so I'll see if she perks back up later. I did top the res just now as well so she is eating and drinking.

She is back to being a perky girl this morning. All is well....Time to get some work done in the garden today. Lots to do...hoping I get most of everything done today.

That droopyness is not normal. At least from what I have seen over a few grows in DWC. Keep an eye on that. Did you top the bucket off recently? It almost looks like the water level was too high. The water level should never go higher than the bottom of the pot. Usually I keep mine about 1/2"-1" below it. I have a sight tube on my buckets for a visual without disturbing the plant.

Below I will try to give you an example of the difference between mediums and plant development that I was referring to earlier.

Here is my Trainwreck from GHS right after trimming her up. I did this plant earlier than normal because of the limited air flow I can get in the 2.5' X 2.5' foot print that I have to work with in this tent. She wasn't much bigger than yours is now when I flipped her exactly 2 weeks ago. She is alternating nodes but notice the absence of pre-flowering. She will continue to stretch for a while yet. I am 6'-2" so the angle doesn't show her height but she is between my belly button and chest.

In comparrison here is my tent with the plants in coco. These plants were flipped at the exact same time (2 weeks ago) as the DWC. Notice the flowering development. The colors are off due to the more purple LED so it's not as easy to see but these girls are full on into the flowering phase. They will continue to stretch a little but not significantly from here on out.

She was fine all day yesterday and then about an hour or two prior to lights out, I noticed her starting to droop down. Like a soil plant needing water almost. Anyways, I figured it was because of her schedule and this morning she is back to praying to the light. She perked right back up.

Just keep an eye on her. This is where a detailed log of nutrient levels, PH, reservoir temperatures relate to plant behavior helps out a lot when you are growing in DWC. Stuff happens really fast compared to soil and coco. This is both good and bad.

I should have also noted the parameters of the grows. The DWC is running GH nutes at full strength so the PPM is around 1100 from 0 ppm RO water on a fresh res change, with a temp of 68 and a PH ranging from 5.4-6.1. At this stage in the grow I altered the GH formulation to decrease the N and up the P and K.

The coco plants are running AN nutes on a 650 ppm starting from tap water at 180-200ppm with a PH stabilized at 5.7. Their NPK ratio has been altered to the flower schedule as well. The PPM's are a little higher this time around for the coco plants because they can take it and I am showing no signs of leaf tip burn.
