My 1st grow

hey MI. something I forgot to mention. After your plants have developed their buds, say 2 weeks, three on the outside, you can go to 13/11 lights up until 2 weeks before finishing. It's equivalent to giving them an extra 2+ days of light.

wow man, this is your first grow huh? hmmm damn ur good! lol nice job man

Yes this is my 1st grow. I have grown veggies in the garden before but never herb. That's how I'm familiar with {MG}. That's for your comment bro.

hi MI you can put a layer of sand on top of your soil to keep adults from laying eggs. Powdered garlic on the soil had them piling out of a cactus plant of mine. Make sure it's not salted.
Don't worry about them unless you have many of them. But you should try to keep the numbers down. Yellow sticky traps I use are called Sticky Stiks 5 bucks at Walmart. I've also heard of hydrogen peroxide being effective but you'd have to research the doseage.

well for starters, they lay their eggs in the soil and the babies eat your roots.
so maybe a transplant? or those yellow sticky things. i read that keeping your fan on at night sort of helps keep them away

Thanks didimauw a transplant is out of the question to costly and time comsuming, I'll try those sticky strips....

Thanks you bro

I'll try a combination of all of them, sand, strips and garlic. Does it matter what kind of sand I use? I'll pick up the powered garlic 2morrow. I have heard of the same thing with hydrogen peroxide but I'm not sure of the mixing combination either or if it even works...

Thanks Mmmmick

I use sand intended for playboxes, it's washed and critter free, a couple of bucks a bag. I would use the garlic only, for the first 3 days or so.(make sure its garlic powder not garlic salt) I had 20 of the lil buggers on the windowsill by my cactus every day for 3 days after sprinkling a half teaspoon or so on the soil. Then a 1/2 inch of sand. Peroxide is supposed to also add oxygen but it can kill some of the benficial bacteria in the soil. I wouldn't use it without being certain how much to use, it can cause you some grief if overdone.
I've also read that potato slices on the soil will draw them out of the soil but it didn't do a thing for me.

Good luck, they're not a real threat unless plentiful. I believe they are a 2 week egg cycle so you might see a few later on.

Thanks Mmmmick, I have noticed them b4 but never really though about it. But when I turn off my fan they seem to come out more. I have also noticed missing peices of my leaves but nothing maijor or harmful to the plant. I just thought I would try to get them out. I have also read a little bit on if I let my soil dry out it will kill them as well is that true? I have this stuff I used on my outside garden {not herb} it's called Sevin-5, it kills over 65 different insects and does not harm the pant. Will it work for MJ as well all you do is sprinkle it on the soil and leaves. Just another thought...

Thanks 4 all of ur help

Yeah drying the soil is supposed to be good as well, but you really should let your soil dry considerably before watering anyway. If your soil never gets very dry you are giving the gnats a welcome. I don't think there's any need to use an insecticide for gnats, especially if you've had them for a while and they're not taking over.
That Sevin-5 contains 5% carbaryl which is also used as a plant growth regulator. Maybe it affects growth positively, I googled it but it didn't go that far into what it does. Sounds like it might affect your plants in a bad way. Wonder why it's used on veggies?
Your call on that one, I'm no chemist.

I did not know that thanks bro I wont use it then. I was just wondering that's all. I will not use it on my plants. I'll let the soil dry out b4 I add any more water..I'll see how that works and if that dont work I'll try the other things U suggested...

Thanks buddy..

I found this, its sounds like some cheap solutions. I have not had a nat problem but these sound like they might work.

Be sure to practice good sanitation by removing any dead plant material and debris from the base of your new plants.

Replace the top few inches of soil with a sterilized potting mix.

Place yellow sticky traps near your plants to monitor the population and nab flying adults.

Use a fine peat moss on top of your potting soil to deter the gnats.
Place 1/2 inch slices of raw potato on the surface of the soil and discard (along with the larvae) after 2 days. Repeat until larvae are gone.

Place red cooking wine or fruit juice in glass and leave it out by your plants. Adults will dive in and drown.

Good luck!
