Monkey's First Grow

So just a quick question. How important is the square for of lumens and wattage needed per square foot.. Im dividing my cabinet onto two places. A veg and flowering side...

Will give details a bit later to show my idea and setup. Just wondering how important those guidelines are and if they have change since the article that was posted on here on 2012.

Thank for any advice and put in.. Just keep in mind im going the cfl only route for now..

Care to elaborate?

The more light you have in bloom the more yield you have. Everything being perfect otherwise you can get 1 gram per watt of light. So if you use less light expect less yield at the end.
For veg the more light you have the better as otherwise the plants will be tall and skinny with longer distance between nodes. This also reduces yield, but not as much. So if you have to skimp on light do it on the veg side, not bloom. But more light is better up to a point.

I run 65 watts per square foot in bloom which is very high, that's about as high as there is any point in going as my
Plants get very light tip bleach from too much light.
Life is like horsepower, you only have enough when you have too much ;-)

My veg cabinet is 45 watts per square foot.

okay well these are the guidelines i saw on an early 2012 post on another site

Lumens per square foot:

minimum amount of lighting needed is around 2000 lumens per sqaure foot
mid range is around 5000 lumenms per square foot
optimal is 7000-7500 or higher lumens per sqaure foot

wattage per square foot:

minimum wattage per square foot: 30w
mid range wattage per square foot: 50w
optimal range per square foot: 50-80w

to determine how many lumens per square foot you have:

find out the square footage of your grow space
width x depth = sqaure foot. Divide the lumens available by your square footage.
This will give you lumens per square foot.

example: say your space is 3 feet deep by 4 feet wide, 12 square feet. the total lumens
available from your light(s) is 45000 lumens. 45000/12 = 3750 per square foot

so now lets say i end up with 24000 lumens and my sqaure footage of growing space is
8 sqaure foot. so that 24000/8 = 3000 lumens per sqauare foot. So that by the top guidelines
are just above a 1000 lumens of minimum needed. question i guess is. will this surfice to flower
two plants?

Lumens per square metre = LUX.

The wattage indicator does however not refer to the PAR value of your grow light which is what you really want to know.

Recommended values for veg is 10k LUX and for flower +45k. This is with LED usually achievable at about 1 meter height vs 30-50cm in flower. Compressed sodium needs to be at about 20 cm distance for optimal light.

This is why HPS are so strong compared to other lights, they have to put out so much light to reach recommended PAR that at 50cm distance they lose about 70% of the photons which is not convertible into photosynthesis. You will however have great light penetration due to the sheer force of light. LEDs on the other hand has a 60-70% positive conversion rate into PAR and does not need to output that much energy as a comparable HPS.

That is a bit french to me to be honest.. With my cfl setup setting out 3000 lumens per square foot with the light kept constantly at 2-3 inches from the plant, will i be okay. Not expecting massive yields just a decent grow.. Oh and this will be from a 400w 2700k setup for two plants.

Just download a lux meter for your smartphone. Its not 100% but will give you a rough indication. Otherwise a good guide for using CFL is to put your hand between the light and the plant. If its a comfortable temperature for you then so will it be for your plants. :)

Okay so i downloaded two lux meter apps and used it in my vegs cabinet that is running the following: 2x 85w 6400k cfl and 2x 20w 2700k.. I moves everything out the cabinet and kept the camera about 5 inches away from the light and go the following readings

Freakin seems high but then again i wouldnt really know.. Anyhow.. Thanks for the help...

You wanna hit 10k lux for veg.

Well i did this at roughly 5-7 inches.. But thanks for the info so far.. This is actually very interesting and an awesome learning curve as this grow is coming along...

Everyday is a learning day .

Hehe yeah every grow is a new obstacle. Those apps arent that accurate either so better go as close as you can and the plant looks happy.

The two strains you will have soon are:
Jackalope (Jack's Smack x Chocolope) by breeder OttawaGreen
Thunderpaws (Jack's Smack x Critical Kush) by breeder OttawaGreen
Thunderpaws is a weird name because I told my girlfriend she could name one of them since she helps me a lot 8-)

Hey guys, need some help got some damaged leaves. Not sure what its from, if its a nute problem or just plane old damage from roughly handling.. Here are pics

This is plant one, as you can see there is damage on one leaf but one leave alone.. The rest look fine and healthy
