IMHO, the fungus gnats are caused by too moist of soil for too long. I have em now, in my very young plants mostly, and it's from keeping the soil too moist, and the fact that they can be in new soil too. Yep, I put the calmag in in very light doses...periodically. You can get rid of the gnats with sns products also.
Fungus gnats have to come from somewhere. They don't just appear because your soil is too wet. That said, a wet environment will attract them better than a dry one will, if they happen to be around.
Most gnat problems, IMO, come from soil you buy in a store. Pre-infested, if you will. If that's the case, it will be very hard to completely eradicate them from your grow. However, there are a few methods to keep them pretty much in check. There are a number of products on the market you can douse the soil with, SNS whatever being one of them. I hear people say a layer of sand on top of the soil works too. The only thing I've tried is Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Spread a few TBS on the top of the soil and some down around the bottom of the pot in the drip pan. The objective is to cover all the egress and ingress points to the soil. Airpots would probably cause a problem with all the little holes on the side. A few applications of DE, when the top of the soil is dry and gnats won't be a big problem anymore.
Just my $.02.
Bad choice of words on my part kushy! But I have found that when my soils not too wet they don't appear....LOL
Yep folks like me! Thanks for all the good sugestions everyone.Sorry Mc! I wasn't trying to pick on you. I know you know what's up with fungus gnats. I was aiming my post at the folks reading your fine journal who may not know how to deal with them.

No new bulb, but I have been takin an ounce of leaves a day and they are growin back faster than I can take em off! I want a hortilux bulb, but I just can't swing it right now!
I could hardly squeeze in 14 plants under 2 400W lights last grow. That must grow a nice compressed 30 cubicft bud block by the end!I would like to see a 400 watt hps grow 17 plants at one time!
