McLoadie's Third Grow Journal

IMHO, the fungus gnats are caused by too moist of soil for too long. I have em now, in my very young plants mostly, and it's from keeping the soil too moist, and the fact that they can be in new soil too. Yep, I put the calmag in in very light doses...periodically. You can get rid of the gnats with sns products also.

Fungus gnats have to come from somewhere. They don't just appear because your soil is too wet. That said, a wet environment will attract them better than a dry one will, if they happen to be around.

Most gnat problems, IMO, come from soil you buy in a store. Pre-infested, if you will. If that's the case, it will be very hard to completely eradicate them from your grow. However, there are a few methods to keep them pretty much in check. There are a number of products on the market you can douse the soil with, SNS whatever being one of them. I hear people say a layer of sand on top of the soil works too. The only thing I've tried is Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Spread a few TBS on the top of the soil and some down around the bottom of the pot in the drip pan. The objective is to cover all the egress and ingress points to the soil. Airpots would probably cause a problem with all the little holes on the side. A few applications of DE, when the top of the soil is dry and gnats won't be a big problem anymore.

Just my $.02.

Bad choice of words on my part kushy! But I have found that when my soils not too wet they don't appear....LOL

Sorry Mc! I wasn't trying to pick on you. I know you know what's up with fungus gnats. I was aiming my post at the folks reading your fine journal who may not know how to deal with them. :peace:

Ya kushy, thanks, I feel that the utmost clarity is essential, especially for someone who might just stumble upon this journal, the last thing I ever want is for people to misinterpret. I try not to be vague, but sometimes in the heat of the moment....,,:thumb:

Plants are all at like 34", under the induction and the hps. The plants under the induction aren't getting a fair shake yet as they aren't directly under the light like the hps are. The afghan kush under the induction is losing leaves at the bottom, I think I'm overwatering it, I'm trying to keep em all on the same schedule, but I guess I'm going to start giving it less water and more nitrogen.

do you think that enough light is reaching the lower leaves? its pretty crowded in there.

Possibly Fishy, but I notice that leaves on the flowering plants at the same distance are green, they are dying of course, but that's to be expected. We'll try a coupla things......very gently of course and see what happens. The hps may have a little more penetration, but if those plants were directly under the induction, they would be kickin hps ass right now. I have a feeling that things may change a little further on in the grow. We are gonna have a lot of time to watch and see. Remember, that's a 420 watt light compared to a six hundred watt. I would like to see a 400 watt hps grow 17 plants at one time! We'll see how much weight I get, I've got 3 ounces so far, it should give me a half pound minimum...total....that's around .5 gram per watt.....not enough! The economics of the light can't be beat for someone just growing for personal smoke, I wish I coulda got sponsored to run 16 of these at a time, the energy savings would have been in the hundreds of dollars for a single grow!

morning MC hows it hanging over here, did you change your bulb and have your thought of a light defoil I wouldnt go heavy on defoil but it has its place in HPS lighting

No new bulb, but I have been takin an ounce of leaves a day and they are growin back faster than I can take em off! I want a hortilux bulb, but I just can't swing it right now!

I could hardly squeeze in 14 plants under 2 400W lights last grow. That must grow a nice compressed 30 cubicft bud block by the end! :)

Nice weedend for you and the all the loadies!

Good weed Mc! You seeming chipper as always.

I looked too long into the glowing wardrobe, now I can't see sh**!
