Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

They do not have a switch mate. You have the choice of getting either the veg light, the flower light or the full spectrum light.

Just putting it out there, but how much light is too much with LED?

I ask because i'm looking at putting 4 x 400w in a 5x5. That's 64w per square ft. Now a 1200w is recommended for a 4x4, and that's 75w per square ft. I could theoretically put 5 x 400 in the tent which would equal 80w per square ft, but if possible i want to try and avoid hanging a light in the centre of the tent (i have a large 4 pot setup with a large acoustic box fan and filter in the cetre of the tent roof)....basically 4 lights just works better for my tent.

So, the question is, is 2800w too much for that area? I ask because now (although it sounds waaayyyy over the top) am now thinking of 4 x 700w, which is 112w per square ft.

5 x 400w and 4 x 700w are only about $200 different in price, so personally i'd rather go with the 4 lights for the reasons above....but 2800w??!!

Might be a bit much i think :/

If they did a 500w or a 600w it wouldn't be a problem

Hey, thanks for volunteering to be the test grow! Can't wait to hear how it turns out. :goodluck:

No, but it a superior light IMO to the 3 W reflector series.

Thanks for the prompt response. It would make that light even better to have the option. I am not yet sold on the 5w diodes. At that wattage the heat does build up exponentially to the lower wattage diodes. Of course, the intensity of the lite is a plus.

Still thinking. I usually do outdoor but with a low heat low maintenance LED system plus some passive CO2 (mycro bags) I can use a 15 sq foot cedar sauna that I never use for indoor. Seems I could run smaller shorter plants and get six flowering cycles in a year. Use my other lights for germing and vegging than toss them in small for ten 3oz plants rather than three large plants that require so much light to just exist. I think LED's were made for smaller plants but that is one mans opinion.

I can't wait to test it out!!

Again, thanks.

When figuring your lighting needs, always take what the claimed footprint of the light is, and subtract a foot from it. That is what you can COUNT on. This isn't to say anything bad about manufacturer's claims, it's just kinda like not counting the chickens before the eggs hatch. Also, make sure that if you are using multiple lights to overlap the footprints.

I agree. Folks who do production grows use 1k HID for every 4x4 footprint. They get about 8 oz per plant (obviously this number is both driven by grow medium, care, pruning tek and genetics) and typically grow 4 plants. Some are growing three and getting the same weight..1.5 to 2.2 lbs., usually a little less than a gram a watt.

So the question than becomes what is the LED equivalent, and like LD25 said, subtract a foot in each direction and that is the equivalent of a hi-end HID 1k lamp. The equivalency is a function of the original power in and the efficiency of the use of that power into usable light by the plant. There is a ton of bad math out there.

I think, quite frankly, that you all (me soon) are really on the front end of establishing the real math for alternate use of LED to HID for vegging through flower. I know a lot of side bys have been done but at the end, some of those have LED systems darn near the wattage of the HID.

I plan to do my first experiment growing the same hybrid, an indica dom for ease of growing, and do 7 two gallon SS babies vegged under HO flourescents and tossed into the LED room on 12/12. At the same time I will grow three five gallon plants of the same hybrid and let them veg and flower under the LED the entire cycle. When I flip the three already in the grow room I will toss in the 7 smaller girls. I am curious about how the plant uses the light if it is shorter versus taller during the flower stage.

My theory is that smaller (shorter) girls will produce more weight per square foot that larger plants per square foot.

If someone has already done this...SAVE ME SOME TIME AND SPILL THE RESULTS!!!!

Thanks.

Thanks. I figured as such. Too bad.

Hi Wingnut420... I have 3 of the 3w reflectors and I absolutely love them. You are more than welcome to check out my journal and see what they can do but I am waiting on the Mars II 400 for my tent. It is a small tent and will most likely only finish 2 maybe 3 plants in it but I most likely will keep it down to 2 but either way it will be a bit before I can tell ya for sure which I like best but I can certainly tell you now that the 3w is making some really pretty buds on my closet girls!!!!....:high-five:

Hey Sarah. I have a bud area 5ftx6ft. I split that to 26"x6ft with walk in middle. What do you recommend in led?

Is this separated because it's veg on one side and flower on the other?

I'm looking forward to joining the TopLED crew! :high-five:

I'm thinking about splashing out on (2 x) Mars II 1200w (one of them for flowering, the other for Veg)

Dimensions :
Flowering - 1.2m x 1.2m x 2m (SCrog)
Veg - 1.2m x 1.2m x 2.3m (I have auto's in here too)

I've emailed Sarah so I'm hoping to ask a few questions and put the order in tomorrow :) exciting times!!

If anyone is interested in following how they perform, there is a link to my journal in my sig :peace:

Hi Doozy .. you calculations are out a little there mate 400x4 = 8000 watts draw..= 32 watts per foot

5x5 = 25 sqf : 800/ 25 = 32 watts... per foot

saying that though, with LEDS I dont think the watt per foot rule applies. i have seen 180 watts pull 5oz dry ... in a DR120 tent..

Guys, i'm just about to order my lights.

I've chosen a 1200w Mars II for my flowering tent. And a 900w Mars II for my Veg tent, where there will be a few autoflowering strains too. I'll be using the 1200w to flower my two ladies in my current journal (which have been vegging since the dawn it feels like) they are pretty big!!

What do you guys think? Both tents are 1.2m x 1.2m x 2m

Also, does anyone know how long shipping takes to the UK?

I promise that I will name my first child after the person who helps me out :) I simply cannot wait any more to order these lights, too damn excited!

Sara has uk Stock... :D

you tent is to small for the size of light... might not be enough height.... 2 x 700 would be good ..
