Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

I talked to a guy at the hardware store yesterday - separate lighting question for a remodel of my basement. And he said they are phasing out CFL, if that's any indication of where things are headed. I have been buying lights for my remodel in recent months and have watched the pricing go down and the availability go up almost across the board on LED lights. I'm curious whether the, say T5s, are going to phase out soon. Whatever 'soon' is. So hard to judge the timing of any of these technology products.

Hey plugged - thanks for your reply. I thought I saw some instructions early in this massive thread, about how to do that switch out of the diodes. Any idea where that is, if it exists? Or is it self explanatory once I see the light? This would be my first LED of this type - a panel style. I have some corn cob style LEDs - anyone use those? I'm not entirely sure what this panel is going to look like in terms of what parts of it are accessible, just how the thing is housed. This LED area is really interesting. I had purchased some LED integrated fixtures for the porches of some property. It was like a regular fixture except the bulb is integrated and had some extended life, longer than a regular bulb by a long shot. For retail household lighting the HDot guy seemed to imply this was pretty leading edge. I never saw them in person however because they are being installed out of state. I find this LED space very interesting. I love the energy savings and environmentally friendly aspects as well.

:circle-of-love:Hi thinkbetter, the old model 300 is with 5w chips. Compared to our MarsII and Reflector series, it has more white leds and doesn't install IR.:Namaste: We have instruction video for chaging led diodes. Hope it will help.:cheesygrinsmiley:
g7lipS2uM1o - YouTube
The coverage of the old model 300 is 1.5'x1.5'. 2pieces will cover 3'x1.5'. You may need at least two more if you plan to cover the whole area.:high-five:
So, can someone confirm what the verdict is on the Old/New 300 with 5W chips? It sounds from the comments that it is a good option but may have a bit too much white light for some peoples' taste. But the diodes can be switched out to add some red in place of some white. Is there a tutorial on how to switch out the diodes? I'm handy buy electrical isn't really my thing. I've put in lights and switches in at my house before so changing a couple diodes seems like it would be simple enough. No?

This model: "Mars300 led light(60 leds *5W Chip), with around 140W actual power" is now at $80 USD on Amazon. I'm a hobbyist so my budget can't justify the New 100 3W version. But at $80 per, I could add 2 of these and get my wattage up where it needs to be with efficient low heat generating lightweight lights. Thoughts from those more versed in LED would be great! Space is 4x5 square, 6 ft. high.

Thanks folks. Great info here. I'm mostly a lurker who studies and tinkers. Thanks for all the great info.

:thumb:wow, very good job, CareerHigh. You should start a grow journal.:)
The Mars 300w with 5w chips did my grow well. I think the light sufficed but I needed to do more on my end with training and fertilizer in the end. If you wanna know I had that and 46 extra watts of CFL and cut one plant (Sunset Sherbet) which got 45 grams flower and 30 grams trim. That as a first time grower with one of MH tent 2x2x5.9 and MH 300W plus supplemented CFL. The bud is smokable and considered top shelf by friends. When it comes down to it the light does well but the other portion is up to you to make the buds perform.

Edit*
Cut the Black Lime Reserve Sunday night and should yield more than the SS. If thats the case I should get close to 1 gram per watt with MH 300w and 46w CFL.

:)Haha, Lazarus.... thanks for directing the place in a euphemistic way.
I just bought 2 of the "old" mars 300 140true watt panels at the recommendation of quite a few people as a good starter light. If you do decide to go that route i will tell you that they are quite a bit more affordable on the well known online auction site that starts with a vowel. Got 2 for $124 w/ free shipping. Just make sure you buy from seller mars hydro. I ordered them sunday and they are supposed to be at my house today.

:dreamy:in terms of electric bill, led is worthwhile in the long term.:high-five:
I concur. You have to factor in all cost including the monthly electric bill. With the MH 300w I was paying around $1-2 a month which factors to $5-6 for harvest 1 (2-3 months of light total off two clones). I bought the light at $70 and harvested over 1oz which is along the lines of $200-300. The tent was the same price so it's paid off so far in terms of harvest. If I harvest again it will have paid for itself and more.

:thanks:Hi Glitch, thanks for the advice. I agree with it. One high power led in the middle and small lights at the sides. :Namaste:
The 60x5 coverage area is only 1.5x1.5 feet. So you would need 4 of them to adequately cover a 3x3 foot area. They are great lights however. Do a nice job. But not for such a large area. You need a very high power led to cover that much are. Likely 2

:circle-of-love:We have also phased out Sun series and updated it to be Mars Pro.The market will gradually eliminate the product out of date. :Namaste: You need to be confident in the new technology.:high-five:

My girls are looking great. The 3 on the right are northern lights
The 2 on the left are LSD-25 all 5 are autos. About 2 weeks old right now. Grown completly under mars hydro LEDs. 1 mars 2 400 and one mars hydro 60x5 300 watt. 80 watts a square foot.
Soil grow with GH nutes and calmag
I corrected the brown rust spots on 2 of the northern lights
It was rust mold. Don't know how I got it but did. Used some neen oil diluted in a sprayer. Currently in 1.5 gallon POTS. Will be transplanting in a week or 2 pending on growth to 3 gallon POTS.
Soil is at 6.2 ph. These mars lights are working well.

Brian, If you are going to change soil try Sanctuary Soil either the Empire Builder or if you want COCO try Big City I know they sell it in Denver and if you check their site it has everything you would add but doesn't burn.

As for the yellowing I think the plant is trying to grow faster then you are feeding it. I myself would love to see what one of the new lights would do with plants on either a DWC, or a EBB and Flow system with unlimited water and multiple daily feedings.
Thanks for the reports and keeping us up on your grow

Yea Brian that is a good problem. I am having similar issues in RDWC with Mars 1200. Plants are growing so fast and PH keeps dropping . 6.3-4.8 in 8 hours but amazing growth. I have a few theories posted on my cursed hempen thread.

Sara, you are most correct! and we thought is was going to take over a year waiting period to get a Mars Pro without a remote. I believe Mars acted very swiftly to get the Mars Pro II to the market. Well done!!!

:circle-of-love:Glitch, your plants are growing great, too, under so much light.:thumb:

:laughtwo:Haha, Shelby, I was told that it would take one year... It happens a bit quicker, which is so exciting.:yahoo: But it will still take another month to get the light. The workers will take off next month.:Namaste:

Not good to transplant autos. Better to leave them in the 1.5 gallon pots. Start with 3 gallon pots next time. Try Hempy technique for less problems. They are looking nice.
