Temperatures

So far the RH has been in the 60s this grow and the temperatures int he lower/mid 70s. I haven't done anything about it because they were in veg and were growing well. Well, going into flower I decided to reduce the RH. I started by setting the exhaust controller lower but that had little effect. So, I set the dehumidifier in the basement down to 45%, then being impatient I went down to 40%. Then yesterday I had the tent open for a while while swapping out the res, and I think it finally dried out.

I checked it today and the VPD was 1.8! It turns out the exhaust controller works much better when the room RH is low. Not only does it control the RH better, but it also allows more heat to stay in the tent. I'm fiddling with the exhaust controller today to find the right settings to keep VPD in the 1.2-1.4 range for the beginning of flower.

Yesterday was res change day. They vegged in this res for 7 weeks (49 days). I decided to use up some old nutes and switched over to Advanced Nutrients for flower.

First thing I had to do was get rid of the clutter. I have a hard time getting anything done in a messy room, so a quick cleaning was in order.

Next, I mixed up the base nutrients in the 20G kettle. This water had been bubbling overnight to come up to room temperature. I put in 511ml of Micro, Grow, & Bloom, along with 300ml Purpinator. I also added 33g of Epsom to balance out some extra calcium in my well water.

While I left the nutes bubbling in the kettle, I drained the RDWC system. I started by draining the res with a submersible pump. This drains about 3/4 of the res, or about 25-30 gallons.

When that was done, I switched over to a little gas pump I have to drain the rest. This gets down to the bottom of each bucket to drain everything except the last 1/4".

This gave me a good chance to take a peek at the roots. They look really good, aside from a little gunk near the water line. This sprayed right off, so I'm not worried about it.

Finally, time to refill the system. I filled a 5g bucket with acid water (5g water+15ml pH Down) to counter the carbonates from my well water. Then I let that slowly leak into the res while I filled it with both nutrients and the hose at the same time. I ended up only putting 4g of the acid water in, as the pH came in a little low. Once all of the nutrients were in and the res was filled, I added the bennies. Hydroguard, Voodoo Juice, Piranha, and z7 were added.

After it was all filled and circulated for about 30 minutes, the res read 1120ppm & 5.6pH. From using AN my first grow, I expect the pH to raise after the first 24 hours. Sure enough, when I checked it this morning it was up at 6.0. I'll add 1-2 ml of pH down every feeding until it gets down to 5.8. I know AN says pH doesn't matter, but I'll feel better at 5.8 ;)

The whole process took about 2 hours. Being my first res change, next time I feel I can cut that down a bit. I'm happy I decided to only do 75% of recommended AN schedule, because the PPMs sent up by about 100 as it was. I'll watch the plants to see if they need more.

The right side of the tent is still slightly higher but the left side is gaining every day. They are all up to the second net, so it's time to start training buds through. I've been tracking the plants daily now waiting for the first day of flower, and I'm going to go ahead and call it at day# 10 of flip. All of the buds are throwing out pistils now. How does everyone else mark the start of flower?

Now on to the fun part, where they all get their party hats and stretch! I'll be guiding them up through the second net as they go, and trying to keep them as evenly spaced as possible.

Hope everyone has a great week.

This is going to be a ton of fun to watch BudMan!

I hope you've been getting in some exercise and taking your vitamins. :)

Thanks @Grand Daddy Black I'm really happy with how it's gone so far. Now I'm hoping to get a decent stretch. Last grow I only got 4-6", but there were a LOT of buds. This time less buds, more stretch? Better genetics too. We'll see.

I don't think there is an official "this is where flowering begins." I make note of when I flip, and when I see pistils. I figure it was flowering a day or two before I noticed. I usually go by flip date but am mindful of pistils showing date, when going by the breeder's flowering times. My "their ready" date is almost always more than breeder's time when going by flip date. :bong:

Thanks @gwhunran Yea, that's what I'm trying to avoid. This is supposed to be 55-60 days. I know they could and probably will go longer, but I'm at least trying to get a decent starting point. I just wondered if there was something in particular that growers look for to determine start of flower.

That first pic of the basement is pure heaven.
Everything you need all organized ready to go.
And the garden ridiculous what you can do.:adore:
Hope everything is going well Amigo.

Thanks @Bill284 Yea I'm doing well, how about you? The weather gets above 80f one day and you end up with heatstroke? That's what happens when you get used to wearing jackets all the time

In all seriousness take care of yourself man and remember to drink lots of water. Heatstroke is no joke, especially at our age ;) Your garden is looking fantastic, can't wait to see that greenhouse full of flowers.

Thanks Buddy. :thumb:
Appreciate it.
I'm going to pay better attention from now on for sure.
Take care. :ciao:

These girls had me worried. After changing out the res they stopped drinking for a day or so. I'm not sure if the res water was too cold or they needed time to get used to the different nutes, but it took them a day or more to start drinking again. They never stopped growing, though, so I wasn't too worried.

The PPMs are rising slightly as they feed which means it's a little hotter than they like. That's exactly where I want it. I want to push the nutes as much as possible without going too far. I'm watching for burnt tips or any signs of excess, but I don't see anything yet. I'll give them the week to get used to the new nutes, then I'm going to add the big bud and take PPMs up to 1300-1400. They look like they're ready for it ;)

They're growing very well but also very unevenly. I know most of this is my light. The light is 24x24, and it's in a 48x48 tent. Obviously, the intensity on the edges and in the corners is not the same as in the middle of the tent. All of the buds in the middle are popping but the corners aren't getting filled. Backing the light off will help spread the light a little more evenly.

I really hadn't though of running out of room on this grow, but I also didn't expect them to grow a foot during transition. I think I still have plenty of room but let's see how much they stretch. I swear they grew an inch last night. The left side of the tent has just about caught up to the right side. They were within 13" of the light, so I raised it 5" to 18". That should give them room to stretch out and get more room for buds :) I will need to raise the rack in the back of the tent soon, too. They're almost up to the fans.

I'm still going down every other night to try to keep the canopy evenly spaced and the same height. I don't want to handle them too much, but I'd rather do it now than in three weeks when they have full flowers. I'm also trying to wait until after the stretch to do any more defoliation, but that's not possible. They're growing so thick there's moisture on the leaves that touch/stack. So, I'm picking a few leaves here and there if they show airflow/moisture issues. I swear they don't even notice.

Now I'm going to go outside and take advantage of the last of the beautiful days before it gets hot and humid again. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Everything looks on point BudMan! What you do is quite impressive. :)

They look impressive. I am getting more stretch than I expected too with Headroom Incident. So far the foliage is not too thick up high on the stalks so light is getting through. I remove leaves to let light get lower on the stalks. I've grown so thick before that i only got decent buds at the very top. I want them from the screen to the tip top.

Did you honestly not expect them to stretch.
Did you get those new non stretch genetics?
Great canopy Amigo :bravo:
It's going to be bananas in there when you have buds.
Hope your having a good day. :ciao:
