Weekly Temperatures
The exhaust fan in this tent is on low to try to keep the heat and humidity in the tent. Even with that it only gets up to the low 70s at the highest. The humidity is in the low 60s, though, putting the VPD in the .8 - 1.0 range. While I would like to get it 5f warmer in the tent the VPD is right where I want it for early veg. I need to think of a way to add a couple of degrees in the tent during the day; maybe a light bulb?
Well, it looks like I can forget about planting replacement seeds for now All of the clones are growing new roots and new shoots! Even the two that had black tips have grown past that and have new green tips. I wonder, though, if I made a mistake when I potted the clones. I had some nice long roots on three of the clones so when I put them in the netpot I draped the taproot through the bottom and into the water. My thinking is that this would help the plants start drinking right away. However, that may have come at the cost of more lateral roots. While the three clones I did this to are all growing longer/bigger roots they are not growing a lot of lateral roots. The one clone that did not have roots through the bottom of the netpot (Jordy) has grown a LOT of lateral roots and a lot more roots in general. In the future I probably will not try to put the roots through the bottom of the netpot when planting clones. I really like having the lateral roots, even if the clone needs to struggle for a couple of days.
Right now I have these girls on very light nutrients, about 250ppm. Below is what I have in the bucket for early veg.
AN pH Perfect Micro+Grow+Bloom - Base nutrients
AN Pirhana - Beneficial fungi (numerous - mycelium) & bacteria (Bacillus mucilaginous)
AN Voodoo Juice – Beneficial bacteria - Bacillus subtilus, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus licheniformis, and Bacillus polymyxa
AN B-52 - Kelp derivitive with Vitamin B1 & humic acid
AN Bud Candy - This is mostly sugar I use a little to feed the beneficial bacteria until the roots\plant can
Botanicare Hydroguard - Beneficial bacteria - Bacillus amyloliquefaciens
Flying Skull z7 - 2 part enzymatic cleaner
Yea, it's a lot of stuff. Most of it is beneficial fungi/bacteria (bennies). The idea is to establish a colony of beneficial bacteria in you plant's root zone so that the bad stuff (pythium, algea, etc) can never take hold. This is in place of a 'sterile' reservoir which uses peroxide or bleach to kill everything. You can use one or the other but not both, as the sterile will kill the bennies. I prefer using bennies for the additional benefits to the root zone. Of course keeping your water temperatures under 70f and well oxygenated is important too
The mother for these clones was named Jenny, in honor of Jimmy Hendrix and the song. So we have decided to get cute and name all of these girls starting with a 'J'. Alright, let's meet the girls!
Jolt was the tallest clone with the longest root. Aptly named, she is shooting up and outgrowing her sisters. She has shot two new nodes since she was put in the bucket and may be looking at a topping in the next day or two.
Jordy (Also known as Jordy Jorts) was the shortest clone with the least roots. She was the only one plants without roots sticking through the bucket when planted. I think because of this she has the most lateral roots. She has a few messed up leaves, I think where the moisture pooled on the leaves in the cloner. All of her fresh leaves look good, though.
Jazz is one of the clones that had 'rotted' at the tip. The tip of the plant was black, again from moisture pooling on the plant in the cloner. She is growing past it, though. I am not sure if she will end up self-topping or what but there is new green growth on top!
Joan is the other clone with a black top. She is growing past it but now as much as the others. She looks like she may have more lateral growth than the others. I wonder if the messed up tip will cause more lateral growth?
Now that everyone is growing I'm going to need to add more nutes. I plan to take it up to 500ppm this week and then see how the plants like it. Once they really start drinking it's easier to see how much nutes they are using, which helps drive what to give them. Right now it is hard to see any difference in the water level or composition from day-to-day so it's really a guess. However, I had them at 500ppm in the cloner so I want to take it back up to there at least. Soon they will really start drinking and it will be easier to see what they need. Sometime this week I am going to need to hand away all of the other clones on the floor too
Happy Growing.
