Let's pick a SSH male!

Tomorrows post became today's when I noticed the temp out side. F**k that S**t.

In my last update I mentioned not much had changed. Today I notice a bit of stretch in Billy. Both plants are growing so it is harder to notice stretch. I am not a numbers guy at all. I grow by feel. I do think a few numbers will come in handy. Both for me and for those following. If for no other than to give a better aspect of what I am seeing.

I don't think I posted a side by side picture of these before. I took separate one's only. In this picture you can see both Billy and Bob together. Billy is now 19 1/2" tall Bob is 17"

The where not the same size before. They both seem to have grown similar amounts. The differences seems to be that the internode's are stretching more with Billy. Both had tight internodes to start. Bob's internodes are still nice and tight right now. The numbers will help us track that. Here are pics showing internode spacing now.

One other thing to note. I am seeing lots of freaky leaves in Bob. This happens a lot. In lots of different strains so it doesn't mean anything in itself. I have noticed some really killer plants with it. It is something to keep in mind with Bob. Both males are starting to show their differences now. It is going to make choosing more interesting. Here is a look at the leaves I mentioned. They are on 3 different levels of the plant and I expect them to continue. I have seen female plants form buds at the junction of the fingers like this.

Another thought is floating around my head now. Maybe save and use pollen of both males. If Bob keeps the short internode spacing. It would be the better plant for a hybrid with the Ghost Train Haze. Smell of Bob I hope will be a indicator. I would still rather have something on the haze side to breed to the GTH. I just don't want to add any more stretch to a stretchy plant already. Trainwreck hybrids can be a mess growth wise.

That doesn't mean that Bob will be best of the 2. Just better for what I think The Ghost Train Haze needs. Strains that are short and could handle a little stretch may be better suited to genetics with more sativa traits from the SSH. As of now both Bag of Oranges and Banana Sorbet are staying nice short and bushy.

I found that site. Thanks Nicholas...... You are no longer needed. LMAO just joking. There is a shit ton of info there that is going to be helpful.
Good glad u checked it out. Really helps when growing Mr. Nice gear. Okay I'll go away now :cheesygrinsmiley:

Worry is starting to take it's toll. I am starting to worry about pollen getting out of control. I am racking my brain to figure out ways to do this with how I am set up now. I am going to be around that pollen so much I don't know I can keep it all in check.

I at least need to make a choice before they start pumping out pollen. If I can reduce 2 plants to 1 early enough that is 50% less pollen I have to deal with. That means not using 2 different males. I am hoping to find enough info to narrow down my search.

I should also say up front. I may bail on this idea if things don't go the way I want them too. In the future I plan to find a better way to do my breeding. By far the best way to control everything is to find a place to breed. Breeding feminized seeds might change things too. My SSH pollen donor may end up being female. I am pretty sure I will be regenerating the best Banana Sorbet and the best SSH females. I can start next year with clones plus make a hybrid while I am waiting. In that project I will self the SSH and hybridize the Banana Sorbet.

Always wash yer hands and change clothes after using a lot of pollen

You can paint a branch or two with pollen then cover those branches with paper bags for two days, let pollen take, then spray everything with water

Pollen is the plauge for sure, but can be controlled if u take yer time with it

Thanks Chris that helps lol. My main concern is the males are going to be in my bedroom with all my clothes. Every time I open that zipper there is a chance for pollen to go everywhere. Pretty sure this is only going to last for 2 or 3 weeks. The females should only be in early flower by the time I kill the male.

I planned on using a paint brush like you mentioned. My worry is more along the lines of all the tiny specks of pollen following me around for a month after I kill the male. I also plan to keep a spray bottle handy. I might be spraying the outside of the tent and surrounding area before entering the tent. Last year I did pretty good changing clothes between trips to the male tent. I may be changing clothes in the living room for a while. F**k the neighbors LMAO.

Don't have a fan on in that tent. That way minimal will drift around..

Also

Once it flowers.. collect the pollen and store it...then yer not in and out of the tent... I'll get like a teaspoon of pollen, and it will last year's...lol
So ya don't need to save a lot

That is my thinking. Save the male only long enough to get enough pollen for a while then get it out of the house. I have bunch of vials I purchased just for storing pollen.

I figured the fan thing out a while back. Boy was there a mess with the fan on LMAO. Everything should go fine as long as I don't panic lol. I have killed a few plants in panic mode LMAO.

One reason that I don't really care if I bail on this project. Is the fact I don't have a huge choice of males. It is only going to be the best of 2 plants. Not the best out of a 16 pack. Still there is always the chance one of these males is the best male I could ever get. Shit happens for the good almost as much as it does for the bad LOL.

I am pretty picky about my buds. I don't mind a few volunteers but that is where it ends LOL. I just envision nice fat buds full of seeds and husks with very little left over to smoke. LMAO

You are right in the fact a few seeds won't hurt them. As long as it is only a few it shouldn't even effect quality. I am not sure how many seeds it takes to start robbing the plant of THC. At some point they are going to use more energy making seeds than it does resin to catch more pollen. I wonder when LOL.

A few extra seeds in plants I didn't pollinate gives me a better chance at finding something special. I have been pretty good at picking the right plants so far. Now way to tell for sure at the time I am pollinating plants.

Thanks for talking me off the edge Chris. I am feeling better about keeping a male already.

Have you thought of clipping a few branches off if you really don't want to chance it pollenating everywhere? I'll go post a pic of where mine is at as of today. Afghani, Cheese & Shiva Skunk Journal. I have no idea the process and I wanted to do the same as you but not so controlled room. I got pollen everywhere from 5 males. Separate building than where my girls are. I am with ya on the nerves though, it scary for being new at it at least for me.

I have to do some reading and find out how to finish them or even know when they are done. I am watching ya closely!

As a matter of fact I have considered that. I am leaving everything now so I can see how the whole plant is reacting. When I decide which plant I want to keep I will trim them down a lot. One branch would have plenty of pollen for what I need to do.

I moved both plants to their own tent now and put them on the fast track to pollen. I dropped the lights back in their tent to 10 hrs. I am still finding out more info on SSH from the Mr Nice forums. Cool place. I am not sure I will be able to make a solid choice with the info I am going to have when it is time. Defiantly more informed than I was before though. There are a lot of different directions a person could go with this strain. On the bright side I don't know that there is a wrong direction. Of course there are going to be good and bad males. That's not what I mean. Which direction the males are leaning is going to make the changes. Looks like I could find NL, Sk#1, and Haze leaning pheno's. Which male you choose will send the hybrid in a different direction.

Back to maybe keeping 2 males LMAO. If I trim down lots of branches on both plants it is doable.

Yesterday they dropped. The SSH males finally grew a set LMAO. I can finally see pods forming. No difference between the 2 as of yet. Since I may not have pollen in time for this crop. I am reconsidering things some. The sativa leaning male might get the nod.

I am more of a sativa fan if it is the right sativa. Only thing to consider now. Is it Haze leaning or Northern Lights. I do believe Northern Lights has a sativa leaf and a indica growth pattern.

I plan to go to hacking at the males today. I want to see some basic growth structure so I am going to leave the main stalk only on each plant. Other than that I am pretty sure all the other branches will need to be taken off.

It would be really cool to have a separate house to flower male plants. I don't know if I will ever be able to flower a male long enough to really see what they can do.

One thing to note

When a male started to flower...he dosent stop

I've stuck em in dark...more spunk
In other rooms...more spunk
Compost....more spunk

I wonder if they can be cloned? Kinda thinking like an auto...once they start they just goooooooooooo
