wow it's been a full week! Sorry, but no pics this time. I'll get pics on Wednesday.
They are 4 weeks since flip last weekend. The buds are forming up nicely and are starting to frost up well. I began their 3 week defol a little late, so I'll be pushing to get it all done in the next couple days. Mostly I need to clean up the bottoms so I don't have a ton of popcorn. I ended up with a lot of it on the first harvest. It's not all bad, it means I have more smoke for me now.
I did have some exciting things happen in the last week though.
Thursday we drove out west and camped along the Snoqualmie River. On Friday, my wife and I went into Seattle so I could see a wonderful Naturopath. She thinks she can get me completely off my asthma meds, so I'm going to follow her recommendations. Mostly it's dietary changes, but she also recommended some supplements. My wife even liked her so much, she is going to start seeing her.
Now you're asking, "Hiker, why would you drive 6.5 hours to see a ND?" This wonderful, capable, intelligent, open minded, and enlightened medical practitioner also wrote me my official WA state medical recommendation.
Up until now, my garden has not been legal. While it's still not legal at the federal level, theoretically, I could invite LEO into my basement now, and probably be OK. As of Friday, I am officially, and legally, authorized to grow, in the state of WA, an
UNLIMITED number of plants!!
Obviously federal rules make the 'real' limit 99, but that will be easy to stay below.
After leaving the Dr and having lunch, I visited the farmer's markets. I had never been in a dispensary or anything like that. It was very enlightening. I guess it's what I should have expected, but I just had no idea what to expect. I really liked it though! So much so, that on Saturday, I rented a table.
I had a really good time getting to meet the patients and other growers. Heard some amazing stories about how Cannabis has changed people's life. My own insecurities about my buds were allayed as I received nothing but compliments on the quality of my buds. I know I'm my own worse critic, but the ego boost was nice.
While the day was a success, ie I didn't bring ANY meds home, the market is quite a bit softer than I had hoped. When I read Sl1ng say he can't afford to grow for less than a $200
donation per ounce, I get worried. It seems like the wholesale rate in Seattle is more along the lines of $100. In fact, most of the meds available at the market were mess than a $150
donation per ounce. Unfortunately, this had a bigger impact on what I got compensated to cover my costs. I certainly haven't paid for what I've put into the room yet. It looks like that may take a few harvests. I was really hoping to be able to upgrade to a mini split after August's harvest, but we'll see. It may have to wait longer. By then it will be winter, so perhaps I'll put that upgrade off until Spring. I could focus on building up my veg/mother area a bit instead.
So we drove home Sunday. I got home around 9PM, and worked in the basement until after 3AM. Work came real early this morning at 6:30.
Before we left on Thursday, I did a fresh res change. I know that my ph stays stable for 4-5 days, so I'd be fine. I had a little scare as the res was initially reading a very very low ph. I had just finished cleaning out the RO barrel and I suspect a small amount of baking soda was still in there. Anyway, I got it to adjust where I wanted and off we went. When I got home and checked on them, it didn't "feel" right in there. It was real humid (55%) and a little warm (81F). As I started to check things out, I realized the fill pump was not plugged in. I think my scare over the very low initial ph frazzled me and I forgot to plug the pump into the controller. The plants had no floods for a little more than 72 hours. It seems to have only affected 2-3 plants. I haven't gotten to the affected plants yet for defoliation, so I will examine them closer tonight or tomorrow. They are all plants sort of buried, so they got less air movement. I also added a couple more fans to the room, so hopefully air flow will be even better. I'm going to add some more holes to my ventilated floor as well. I wanted to err on the side of fewer, and now I realize I can add many more to help get more air into the center of the plants.
Some areas of the room are more stagnant than I like. I had drilled my holes in a way that would make sure to put most of the air out the holes away from the intake fan. This helps circulate the air. Now I realize I can put quite a few more holes in the floor and still get the results I want (dancing leaves all over the room). Both of the tower fans I bought stopped oscillating. I am getting them replaced, but I've lost confidence in that style of fan. I bought 2 new smaller oscillating fans. Right now, one is mounted to the wall at one and and the other is on the shelf with the AC and dehuey. I'm going to build a mount so they can ride on the light mover and blow down on the plants as they pass. This will make sure all the plants get a strong breeze to strengthen the stems, but not have them always being in front of the fan. I'll post pictures once I have it up and running.
Well this was supposed to be a quick update, but it got longer than I planned.
I'll get some pics up on Wednesday. I'm taking some during the defol process so you can see a sort of before and after. I haven't seen the outdoor girls since Wednesday, but I'll see them in another hour or so. I'll take some pics and get those up Wednesday as well.
Keep em green everyone.
