Landrace Genetics 101

It also funny what people consider a sativa these days. I’ve read people on this forum say gorilla glue is a sativa. Even something like SSH is still only 50% sativa, 50% NL/Skunk.
This year I’m trying some new Colombian sativas. Punto rojo x ‘78 Lumbo, Acapulco gold x PuntoBiche. And Acapulco gold x highland Mexican/blueberry. All should be big old school bamboo style plants. I’m a little worried about the potency from the Acapulco gold crosses being low due to the mom being very mild in effect, but I’m hoping for some hybrid vigor to boost it up.

Yeah it's the same everywhere. I bet in US dispensaries they haven't seen a sativa yet although they've been selling them for ages :)

I hope when all the legalization dust has settled, there will be room for the little guys to grow the old school sativas the way they should be.
I’ve tried Durban poison at Colorado dispensaries as the only sativa I could find. It was really good but definitely not a real Durban sativa. It was a hard chunky super dank day wrecker. Not a licorice smelling zippy sativa.

I have a friend that says she likes energetic giggly sativas like tangerine cookies. I said well real sativas are like Thais and Colombians and long flowering Mexicans. She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I guess I am.

IDK about that. It seems legal market is all about the hyped up strains that change every year depending on who pushes what on IG. Bag appeal and smell seem to be the most important factors. God luck trying to sell Thai to a dispensary if you can do it at all!

There’s a good show on YouTube called canna cribs where they go some of the massive grow ops. There’s one in Arizona and their head plant guy was from the Amsterdam scene and was talking about breeding with all these cool landraces and shit. I think he worked with Flying Dutchmen and the cannabis college in Amsterdam. Then when they asked about production it was all cookies, OGs from Karma and he said he gets his hazes from rare dankness. womp womp

I have the same problem with the other smokers around me. They don't seem to care about the high at all. :hmmmm: They want it to look like it's potent and smell like it's potent, and they just want a heavy rush.

I've come to think of it as medical vs recreational. They just want to have fun - get high, etc. I'm always high, so for me it's a mood regulator. I'm not getting high to have fun. Again. One more time. I'm looking for a strain that has its own character.

I've never had anyone hand me any dispensary weed that had any character. Maybe FPOG - I had that once and it stood out.

:bongrip:

@Graytail You use the word character which I can appreciate. If you ever get the chance you should grow Master Kaze from MrNice. Great character! Checks a lot of my boxes. Genetics are MasterKush/Skunk x Afghan/Haze. 25% sativa but with a great uplifting high. As far as landrace/heirloom types- Colombians have great character too. Mood elevators

But ... Skunk. For some reason, Skunk just offends me. Skunk this, Skunk that - they had to cross everything with Skunk.

For me, it's the Colombian and Thai Golds, with maybe some Mexican to take the edge off. Ace's newest Destroyer is a classic sativa. Classic!

But I do want to try some MrNice gear one day. I've seen a lot of good results from Master Kush.

(Ace mails to the States, as well as many of the seed dealers. Ace's payment is a PIA, though.)

I hear ya on the skunk. Several of the strains Mr.Nice got from Nevil were crossed with skunk. Like g13. Nevil mentioned that skunk added bud structure into his poly hybrids.
It seems like the popular master kush clone that went around and won the cup was an elite plant. I believe it was called High Rise first.
I’ve wanted to try destroyer and some other ace offerings. When I first decided to order sativas from Spain I went with cannabiogen over ace and that’s kept me busy for that last several years. But of course I would absolutely love to grow their A5 crosses. When nevil was breeding his “grail” crosses in oz with Kanga he was going for something similar to what ace has now done. Does all that make sense? I’m a little ripped already from some early master kaze sample.

you should see the blank stare I get when I visit one. It is fun for me. I am just a silly old knuckle head looking for something not hybrid. (Not that there is something wrong with designer branding)
I don’t care how high the thc numbers are, I’ll just smoke more or less at once.
I always think the dispensary stuff is over dried as well I dunno, could be me.

Hey, I just noticed that the CannaPot.com ad banner lists Bitcoin as a payment option. I've bought from them before and shipping wasn't an issue at all. They carry a pretty wide inventory.

It’s funny how everything is cakes and gelatos and cookies shit right now. Kwikseeds is the US branch of real seed co.
Thanks, Cannafish. I've avoided buying online since I was sold garbage years ago. Have you ordered from Kwikseeds? If so, what was the seed quality?

Since I'm close to what is known as the Emerald Triangle, there's never a shortage of good strains, but to one who isn't a breeder like me, cannot count on consistency from a pack of seeds. Everything seems to be hybrid hype with new names associated with food. The old hippies are dying off and the new culture has its share of pretentious characters. The one fellow who made his name developing a few great strains and some higher CBD strains passed on. He was a kind helpful man.

In the 80's we had powerful indica, Dark brown Thai that resembled molasses in color, Mex and Columbian. Those were the days of earthy, spicey relaxation.

No I haven't ordered from Kwikseeds. I did message Angus at RSC directly and he said to go through that site for orders state side. He did say it was discreet using cards. No hi grade marijuana seeds on the credit card statements. I was waiting until he had Manipuri back in stock but then I forgot about it.

Personally I would look as the RSC seeds as breeding stock. Most are collected at the source from famers and will have loads of phenotypic variety. Most likely they won't have much consistency. Pop a good number of seeds and see what works best in the new environment. Cross the best and repeat. Or clone the best and repeat.

RIP Ringo

I just bought Mazar-i-Shariff and got 17 seeds as freebies. It really makes sens to buy stuff there, you always end up with something extra that's usually very really cool.

I still ain't seen a bud that can me high from looking at it or sniffing it......so I just don't get it. Sure they might look pretty....but if it doesn't do something special when I set it on fire, I just move on.

I do it occasionally, not just for pain, but for a spiritual relaxation. Most people in the sensationalist culture would be a hindrance to that.
