Landrace Genetics 101

In progress.

Tropics, morglie and anyone else’s who’s grown/growing Purple Satellite.

I have three at 20 days from seeds popping. Tonight I discovered this (see photo). A male flower at 20 days?! This seems awfully unusual. tropics, is this "typical" for the strain? Well, I guess better at 20 days than feeding her, er him, for 6-8 weeks.

Are you growing it indoors? You need to graduate the light downwards from veg to flower. If you cut straight from veg to flower timing, they seem to have a high percentage of having hermie traits. I have one that just threw nanners around 30+ days that I put from 18/6 straight to 11/13. Beautiful plant.

I'm going to try again, using my breeding room to lower the time by half an hour a night. That'll take two weeks, and then I can slap it under my quantum boards and let them take off.

Yup, indoors. Currently running 18/6. Not planning on lowering the schedule for at least two more weeks, when I switch to flower. tropics explained the lighting issue. I planned on lowering the schedule similar to what you’ve done. I’m confident my plant is a male, just surprised at how soon it showed.

Hello gentleman and ladies, yes you need to graduate the lights down very slowly, Satellite was adapted to flower outdoors very early at latitude 42 degrees . I have never seen her herm outdoors under natural light graduation but will almost always put out male flowers on the tips of the buds which is a clear indicator that she is stressed from to abrupt of a light change. Fortunately being on the tips they can be plucked out with tweezers. There is cultural info on Seed Finder on light graduation regime for indoors. Many people have had great luck following those guidelines, but she was truly bred and promoted as an outdoor cultivar.
Below Satellite with proper graduation under light.

Thank you morglie
You need to follow the grow guidelines illustrated on seed finder, if you dont give plants what they need they will not respond favorably period!

My Malawi are moderate feeders, just be careful you don’t over feed.
day off today? :) im going to be real careful with these that Malawi is already showing signs of sensitivity those are starting in straight out of the bag roots 707 nothing added they do good in that soil for a bit but its weak soil so they'll be ok in those cups for another week then into a 1 gal and some tea!:)

I was gifted some sativa genetics {Mulanje x Swazi} from a 420 mag member. Specifically for making Malawi cobs. I had to do some rearranging of the tent (create more vertical space) and bought a 315w CMH to improve the yield over my LEDs.

Soaked them in water for 24 hours, then between paper towel until they cracked. Then placed into soil. Took about 36 hours for them to make it above soil.

Thanks for the heads up on that Penny. I have Ace malawi and have been planning on popping a couple this fall. It turns out my soil mix is pretty heavy on the nitrogen. You may have just saved me a headache. I'll remedy that before I pop any of them. Thanks.

Hey @tropics: I grew a Lebanese landrace x Nepalese landrace outdoors. Bloomed the earliest of anything I've ever grown: early July. I figured it was due to the Lebanese lineage, because they can bloom early.

But could the Nepalese have also contributed to the early flower?

Yr doing god’s work amigo, your lines are fantastic! Grow on!
