Landrace Genetics 101

I remember now lol! the browning of the buds in the shade curing process is caused by an enzyme. it's a sort of pre-fermentation state. similar to that of browning fruit. it creates an unsuitable environment for most molds. at least temporarily. once the enzyme becomes inactive the fermentation or decomposition process can begin. fortunately our 'fruit' usually dries before that.

man.. i don't even know what triggered that memory. woah.
smokin' some new stuff called Frank. yep. Frank lol. reminds me of the old University of Washington heist strains big time. same flavor, look and effect.

anyways, mostly came by to say the first trial TC media is cooling in the pressure cooker right now. should be able to start a thread on it in the next day or two. i'll post a link here soon.. not tonight tho. too franked lol

Here is a web page on TC for MJ. According to them, no one published any great success with MJ or hemp TC until 2007. So it is still pretty new territory. They also cover what they call synthetic seeds.

Ace got hold of Oaxacan line from '79 recently, and they're growing the seeds. Here's how she looks.

i came across that one during my research :thumb: thanks BS! i noticed they are using a 2 step process of culturing. i've also come across a nicely written 4 step process in pdf format. all too much work if you ask me :laughtwo: we will only go there if we have to. the more transfers involved the higher the chance of contamination so i am going for a 1 step media for the first experiment. there is a company in oregon that sells a one step media for mj on the commercial level so i am confident we can duplicate it here., or at least get close enough.
so we are off to a grand start this morning lol. the agar in the cultures did not set. pulled everything out of the pressure cooker and it's still liquid. hmff. the agar is too old. i have more on the way. should be here monday or tuesday. i have to go to town today.. i may be able to track some down there. grrrrr.. i knew i should have had my mocha first lol. i'm just excited to start a thread and share with my new friends. i hope you all know we are going to do this. together.
i was also hoping to start my first auto-flower thread but i have to make a little room and make sure the recent battle with planet pest has been won. i left the pots outside and they got soaked by rain.. gah 🤦 it can only get better from here.. i hope.

I grew it, A grade landrace indica that should be processed into hash to be fully appreciated. She produces very relaxing/narcotic stone and has exteremely spicy taste to it. I kinda liked it.

I am looking for some of those 'type II' plants myself to make hash for medical (pain relief) purposes. The Lebanon landrace plants would be my first choice. My attempts to make hash with leftover trim and bud have been less than satisfactory, because the plants are not the right type (type I). The new strains with high levels of CBD and low THC are not right either (type III). The older Rosenthal/Frank Marijuana Grower's Guide (1992) lists what they call 5 types of Cannabis "chemotypes", and type II is best for hashish as they have high levels of CBD and THC:

This is an intermediate group, with high CBD and moderate to high THC. They usually originate from countries bordering 30 degrees latitude, such as Morocco, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In this country, this type of grass usually comes from Afghani and Colombian varieties. Type II plants are quite variable in the intensity and quality of the high they produce, depending on the relative amounts of THC and CBD in the variety. Probably because of their high CBD and overall resin content, these plants are often used to prepare hashish and other concentrated forms of marijuana.

What do I want? I want to be able to grow and make Lebanese blonde and red hashish from back in the day.

If it is a true Oaxacan, it will have a mint taste to it. The Oaxacan seeds that I grew all had an overpowering mint taste to them, to the point that I sold it all. It was too detracting for me. Sort of like smoking menthol cigarettes.

I keep many old seeds of horticultural plants frozen with good success. With germination up to 50% on seeds 25- 30 years old. Unfortunately I didn't keep any MJ seeds! Most of the varieties we smoked back in the days of old, that I have come across in recent years, usually has been in a baggie or a coffee can in the garage or stuffed in a corner of a sock drawer forgotten in a metal film can! 25,30,40 plus years in those conditions can kill seeds. It sure is great some of you guys took care of some of the old strains! The Red Lebanese in the late sixties and early seventies was powerful, dense, dry and cut well with a sharp knife or a razor blade,it also could be crumbled a bit but was so hard it needed to be broken or cut into a small piece before crumbling. What I saw was pressed into bricks that actually where the size of a house brick. In Germany, at the time, it was sold in "fingers" about 5-7 grams(the size /length of a finger) for about $10. Back home it sold for about $5-6 per gram. The blonde Hashish was less dense, more crumbly, very fragrant and was very potent! I saw it pressed into light wood boxes lined with a sort of canvas top and bottom. I can remember a sheet of paper that appeared to be like a art stamp with Arabic writing inside the box. I did not know what it said or remember now, many details! These were kilos as were the red Bricks, if I remember right! The Black Afghan Hashish I got at the time was very different from the Blonde or the Red hash which was quite "trippy"! The Black Afghanistan was Black! much like ebony wood, more leathery and bendable and it seemed more narcotic in nature! It came from the source attached to a leather strap in blocks only about an inch thick. The stuff I got once was on a leather strap about 3-4" wide and aprox. 10-12 " long and had a strap top and bottom and on one end the strap wrapped up the end. This was about two inches thick excluding the straps because it appeared to be two parts sandwiched face to face that could be roughly separated at the middle if desired with only a little flaking, like hay bales. I hope one of you guys can resurrect some of that old hashish here in the civilized world!

You can try The Real Seed Company They have seeds from Sinai, and other unique hash areas.. :)

I do not trust seed companies. I do not trust the black market any more either. I was looking at a Granddaddy Purple plant grown from seed the other day and it did not even have any purple on it! WTF is that? Purple is a dominant gene in MJ. Hard to wash that out, but they managed to. Which is another issue growing MJ and hemp; the plants have a wide array of genes and thus adapt to different growing regions rapidly. I buy clones because they are not genetically washed out. They are also rooted females, and in many cases I can see and verify (and even smoke) the mother plants.

Lots of seed companies claim to have seeds from plants from Lebanon, but... several places in the UK and the EU (if they can be trusted) are out of stock. Lots of talk online is that Lebanese Hashplant and other similar strains of seeds sold are all herms. Also they tend to be crossed to make them more 'type I' plants. I want original 'type II' landrace plants from the Bekaa Valley. They are said to be rather short and early maturing. Perfect for the PNW.

Wanted to share my favorite cannabis related song. Release the year of my birth, 1976. Sort of on topic.

"A Passage To Bangkok"

Our first stop is in Bogota
To check Colombian fields
The natives smile and pass along
A sample of their yield
Sweet Jamaican pipe dreams
Golden Acapulco nights
Then Morocco, and the East
Fly by morning light

[Chorus:]
We're on the train to Bangkok
Aboard the Thailand Express
We'll hit the stops along the way
We only stop for the best

Wreathed in smoke in Lebanon
We burn the midnight oil
The fragrance of Afghanistan
Rewards a long day's toil
Pulling into Katmandu
Smoke rings fill the air
Perfumed by a Nepal night
The Express gets you there

[Chorus]

I smoked a lot of Maroccan hash (mid to highgrade) and a lot of Black Afghan back in the day. Afghan was usually higher potency and also much more narcotic in nature with powerful munchies and laziness but short-lasting :tokin: Marocco had a better taste, but was lighter on body. I think once I smoked sth which might've been Lebanon Blonde. My buddy told me it was Turkish but they don't produce it in Turkey instead smuggling it from Lebanon. It was very refined trichome-wise whiteish as a beach sand and was the strongest I ever smoked which started me thinking :tokin:

A lot of water has gone under the bridge in the Bekaa Valley since 1969! People outside of the valley(AND SURROUNDING REGION) are not as comfortable going there now! War,civil strife, greed and contamination has surely taken a heavy toll! Best hope for the present is finding authentic seed stocks in honest peoples hands. The local skills, culturing, climate and harvesting probably make it nearly impossible to duplicate the original traditional hashish of old! Hope for keeping the seed stock alive and learning the details of the cultivation/preparation so that it will not disappear!

So it appears we all have this hashish calling ..so to speak. i have tried and studied but just can't seem to make it like I remember.MMMMmmm That dark stuff that would curl your lips with a few tokes haha,My next batch will involve a hash press i made out of a large deep socket and a bolt and bold head. That goes in the shop vice. This works good but not like the old stuff. Now i have read about warming the keif before you press it. Heard that will help mix it all up inside..I'll let ya know how it works.Hash was/is my favorite back then,,The blond was good but the dark stuff mmmm.Finger hash and one guy had "elephant ear" hash.I think he made it up.anyone ever hear of that one? Its amazing that you can look up on line and see hashish being made "over there" from field to the finished pressed product. All from your easy chair haha I'll keep up you posted on how it comes out. Happy Hemping ,Red

I'll be 62 the beginning of next month, and I can't remember black hash like that since I was in my early 30s, but the memories are sweet.

Yes, the hashish still calls me in my dreams. The Lebanese stuff had the best overall high of any MJ product that I have smoked. I never heard of elephant ear hash, but certainly smoked Nepalese Fingers and Temple Balls. They were both dark green. I used a tortilla press the last time I tried to make hash. I did not get it warm enough before pressing it.

Sad news, they just seized 200 kilos of hashish in the Bekaa Valley last week. :thedoubletake:

i so remember the nepalese fingers. we called them green fingers. had that mooshie bubbly goodness. oh the blonde lebanese too. i remember that and the black were pretty popular with the military guys and we had a base nearby so it was easy access.

i don't even want to click that link right now.. piss me off before bed lol.

goodnight :420:

A December birthday? Me too. Dec. 1

Wish I could grow enough plants to just beat/flail the goodness off like they do in the near east. Yeah, I'm just gonna go to the barn today and flog some hash out of the stack of dried plants out there.
