Lady Cannafan Shrooming Midwest Grow Kits & Spore Genetics - APE, Blue Meanie & More

The tops on a lot of these had an almost black covering. It came away with a soft brush, almost like a layer of charcoal dust.
Probably left them in there too long, I really don't know.
Just spores dropping!! Doesn't hurt anything

Well, I'm just having way too much fun with this. 😆
My first spore print, using a small Blue Meanie Cube cap. This was left overnight. I think there might be a bit more to drop, so I turned the cap back over in a different area on the foil. I didn't expect that purplish hue, but that's the way it came out.

I didn't have total success, I tried two of the Tidal Wave caps and they just turned icky. The caps didn't look all that great when I plucked them, so this morning I have three more that look pretty nice, and they are in the cabinet waiting for prints.

6:00 a.m. this morning a truck dropped 100 sterile wrapped syringes and some poured agar plates. Needles will be here Sunday with some micropore tape and a couple other small things.

As soon as my SAB arrives this morning, I will be transferring one of the AIO bags into a shoebox.
Yes, I ordered an inexpensive still air box. Making one from a clear plastic tub presented storage issues. The one I have coming is collapsible and can be stored easily. I might need to reinforce the corners, we'll see. I have a plan if I feel I need to do that.

Nice print @Lady Cannafan

Will you be making your own Agar?

TR
:thanks: I watched some vids late last night on how to make my own, I will be giving that a go very soon.
First I want to get the spores made up and into the syringes.
That still air "box" I ordered is HUGE. LOL It should work out fine.

I was looking into those also, they all take up half or kitchen table.
Like you said, need to be able to store it until I need it.
This one is collapsible, like a collapsible hunting blind...if you've ever had one. Fold it down, around and it collapses into a circle. Has a carry bag too. I'm cutting up a piece of cardboard and cover it with plastic for a sturdy "floor" in it to set my tools on. Removeable of course.
Here's the item:

Here's the collapsible one all set up. There is one shoe box in there, and room for three more. Seems sturdy enough, it's not like I'm going to be playing romper room in there. 😆

Looks Cool......That should really help with keeping the contaminates at bay.

I got some spore prints from the Tidal Wave caps, but it doesn't look to me like they're done. I've read anywhere from 24 to 48 hours?
Also, I had followed one instruction that said to place a glass jar over the top. I didn't like that at all because it caused condensation. I used small jelly jars. Shouldn't the caps be getting dry, not wetter? I didn't feel the need for a small drop of water on the cap, as some instructed, because they were quite freshly plucked.
Right now I have them in a tupperware container with a lid, in a dark cabinet with no airflow.
And...you do keep those tops after they've released the spores..right? I'm going to put them in the dehydrator.

UPDATE: 12-3-23

I took one of the AIO bags that had been colonized and put it into a shoebox, mixing it up really well using my new SAB. That is now in the grow house with the other completely colonized box.
When I ordered the shoe boxes, I failed to see that the lids were white, not clear. UGH...so I have clipped some saran wrap to the tops of the boxes to allow the light in.
There is a spot of white on the box on the right. So, something appears to be happening.

Is that going to cause any troubles? I should give it some fresh air. Are you guys punching holes in the shoe boxes for air? I could do that cleanly with my soldering iron.

I have one AIO bag still waiting for pinning, it's only been 5 days. Supposedly will see them within 12 to 16 days at this stage under 12/12 lighting.

The jars are doing good, the PCE jars are really doing well. Let's hope they are not contaminated this time.
I see a very light sign of mycelium on one of the APE jars, I was excited to see that considering how slowly the first round of APE started full mycelium growth.
The fruiting tub is not doing great. I am getting nothing more on the Blue Meanies, and only a couple on the Tidal Wave. Wondering if I should dunk them again and try it.
There appears to be a couple of small aborts on the Blue Meanie at this point, nothing more.

I am thinking on breaking up the two jars of APE into a substrate mix in a shoebox. I think I would get more return than putting them into the fruiting tub as a cake. I would love to get at least ONE Ape out of all this. 😆

Good Mornfternoon Mushroom fans.

This morning I am going to be preparing some spore syringes from my spore prints.

I'm trying to get a camera situated to take some photos of the process in the still air box, we'll see how that goes. I have a remote trigger, so there may be a way. I might cut a hole for the lens to shoot through as long as I can keep a tight seal. Still pondering that one.

I'm also going to transfer some spores onto agar plates. I'll probably use the syringe I've prepared. The spores will be Tidal Wave.

You need a voice activated gopro, sterilise it and leave it in there 🤔

Where there's a will, there's a way. And, there ain't no way I can afford a gopro at the moment. Maybe later on.
I found a 420 Magazine sticker made the perfect round item to stick to a side of the still air box for a perfect circle. I traced around the sticker on the inside of the plastic using my lens hood, then cut the circle out with an exacta knife. The camera lens fits perfectly in the hole and the lens hood screws on from the inside. Gives me just enough photo area inside to shoot what is happening in the SAB. The lens hood keeps the camera lens tight in the hole. I have a remote trigger that I will put inside the SAB.
Sorry about ruining your sticker @420 , but it went to a perfectly good cause. 😆

For the substrate I use 1 coco coir brick (650 gms) ,8 cups of vermiculite, 1 cup gypsum, and 4.5 qts of water. put all dry ingrediants in a sanitized 5 gallon bucket. Add boiling water and cover with the lid. let stand until cool. then mix the slop. Test for field capacity and your good to go.
I got this all mixed up. Field test showed a bit too wet yet. I assume I just leave it be a day or two to dry out a bit?

I would find a way to press out the water either by hand or maybe a pasta strainer.

With the great products grown from Midwest Grow Kits, and Spore Genetics, I have been able to make spore prints and my own spore syringes.
I did two syringes this morning using Blue Meanie Spore prints. Two more will be done today using Tidal Wave prints.

I had to make my own distilled water yesterday, the grocery delivery gave me "smart Water" with electrolytes instead of the Distilled water jug I had ordered. I don't know if that electrolytes process affects it or not, so I opted to make my own.
Everything was sterilized, including the shot glass for the liquid. I heated the needle and the e-xacto knife blade up before putting them into the SAB.
This went well. I had two small spore prints and used one for each syringe.
The spores were scraped off the aluminum foil into the shot glass. Then 10ml distilled water drawn into the needle, and dispersed into the shot glass. Then I drew it back into the syringe and out again a couple of times just to be sure all the spores made it in there.

I did get a little air bubble in both syringes, but they are small. You can see the spores in the end of the syringe in the last pic.
Later I will be doing transfers to agar plates, probably using some of the syringes from Spore Genetics. I have some of the Blue Meanie and Tidal Wave left in those.
