KJ's T5/CFL 1st Time Grow

lookin good karl. looks like a good amount of flowers on those plants!

Thanks! I didn't go back to LST after the 5 gallon bags were used and they still ended up pretty wide.

It's going to be interesting what the yield will be. Some were suggesting about 1/2 lb each (I'm not really counting that 8" one). I don't have enough background to even make a good guess.

few new pics:

More leaves coming out of the buds and more 'frost' on the leaves...
Nearly done with the 2nd grow room. 1 more wall, then I can move the clones in there.

Update: good news / bad news.

Bad news, several bud tops are having problems, leaves on the same site are having issues too.

I've got it down to something to do with the fan and probably humidity too low. It was in the 29/35 range. So I moved the plant away from the fan, lowered the fan to med during the lights on time, added the swamp cooler to up the humidity. we'll see what happens the next few days.

Good news: The smell, today was MUCH more smell than yesterday. I can't take a picture of smell, but it's there.

Only a few plants are having issues, and mainly the ones directly in front of the fan. Probably need to invest in two fans that mount to the ceiling. That way I can lower the wind speed.

Check the FAQ for the discussion of the problem buds:
Is this bud rot?

Near done with the new grow room. All but one of the local shops were out of Fox Farms Ocean Farm! Looks like it's a popular time for growing.

Closeups of the problems please karl!

Closeups are on the way...

Update: Get ready for some more cool DIY!
This time, it's the watering with a pump. What I have so far is:
1. water pump
2. 1/2" ID clear hose 10' long
3. 2 adapters for the hose
4. Harbor Freight extending reach watering tube with

Pretty simple, hook up a hose to the pump, adapt the hose to the watering stick with the on/off valve.

Drop the pump in the tub, water the plants... pretty simple... pics to comes soon. I'm using the 1/2 clear tube so that it's easy to move around and won't crush the plants. Next might be a tub with wheels :D

Got the 5 gallon bags and Panda sheets. So now that only thing stopping me is the soil. Two local shops where 100% out of stock!

The pump was about $15, the handle was about $6 and has the on/off handle ... very handy! You move to a plant, squeeze the handle, release and move to the next plant. Very very handy.

It also has several settings, the jet setting works well for small plants, the full setting works for larger plants. It extends and is easy to get under the plant without damage!

The hose is 1/2 ID and is pretty easy to move around, I had to use those adapters to get to a smaller hose, but a 3/4" ID was thick and bulky, probably would have damaged the plants.

Overall, an excellent project. I mix in 5 gallon buckets, put the pump in one bucket, add more mix as needed.

Edit: The flow rate is not very fast, I didn't time it, but it was about 1 min / plant. not a problem because you don't really want high flow down there anyways.

Only had to move 1 plant to water everything. You can go down the middle of the row and just tilt the spray head from side to side.

Ok, so back to the problem with the plant...

Most striking is the stem, notice how it's half white/ half purple?

Notice the two bud sites, one damaged one healthy, both on the same plant.

Notice the same bud showing damage on one side not the other?

Notice the leaves having damage on ONE edge of the leaf?

All these edges/sides where the sides that were towards the fan. I'm pretty sure of this fact, as I checked several sites and compared. No damage down low where there is no fan.

These two buds are on the same plant, left bald and browning, right healthy

Nice lil setup you made there, I got a extra pump from a cloner I never used, Ill prob make something similar now that you put the idea in my head.

Dont really know about the damage mate, would hate to give wrong Advise on something and make the problem worse.

Good luck. Hope ya get the answers You need

Thanks! I used the same Harbor Freight pump that I have in my DIY cloner, so I can swap them out if needed. Total cost was somewhere around $20 or so. I can tell you it's REALY NICE to use :D

If you go down the middle of the plants, you can just move side to side and you're done! Should have done this weeks ago! So cheap, so helpful, just the way I like it.

I was using a water pitcher that was damaging the lower branches, now with the curved end, I just work it under the lower branches and it's right where I need it to be.

The on/off lever is so sweet, little or no dripping on the floor!

As far as the damage to the plants go, I'm now turning off the fan, moving the plants away from the fan, keeping the fan on low. I'm getting ceiling mounted or wall mounted fans soon, that should end the problem.

Good news is that I caught this before it wiped out a few plants. It's affected about 6 to 8 sites, not good, but I should still have a good yield.

This also brings up a point. So far into the process, and something like this happens. Points out the value of having more plants. If you have a problem with a few plants, you still have more plants to keep up the yield.

We'll see what happens in the next few days, they might recover, they say these plants are robust, so who knows.

Yea my pump in my cloner was 17 @ harbor freight caught it on sale, probaly the same one. I. Got a sink sprayer that I can easily rig up a. 3/8 i.d. hose with a small. Clamp or crimp ring to it, will make it so much easier to reach behind my plants and not having to remove Them to reach behind.

Thanks for the good idea....

How big of a fan are you currently using?

Harbor Freight is a great place for cheap stuff, and they have a lot of cool stuff. I wish they sold HPS lights for $69 :D

I'm pretty sure it's a 16" fan. I had no fan problems before, so I'm confused about why it's a problem now. Might have been because the hairs are not as strong as the rest of the plant and didn't like the fan on high. Might have been my watering program, I waited till the small plant drooped, then watered the next day. Now as soon as the small plant shows any sign of drooping, I'm going to water.

I might look for a fan speed controller and setup 2 16 fans on the ceiling.

I noticed on the clones the other day, several were bent over. I added water, a few hours later, they looked great. I think I've been too lean on the water. That'll change now.

I really don't know if those bud sites will recover, but if nothing else, I've learned something -- Don't have the fan so close!

I have 11 plants in this main grow and 25 clones ready to take their place, so I hope I don't have the same problem next time.

It looks like low Rh to me, fan drying out foliage? I run sooo many fans it's not funny, just set em to run like a breezy day, everything moving just a little all the time.

That's one of the things I thought too, but everything remained the same. It's the same RH as it has been, same everything.

I guess the good news is that I can't see it spreading to the other plants much. Everything seems to be only where they were directly in front of the fan.

Not happy, but I'm closing in on the end so it doesn't look likely they'll recover.

It would be nice to know what caused this. This is really the bigger issue, seeing something and having a solution to it.

I have my humidity in my flowering room at about 30-35% all the time - not having any issues so far (about 4 weeks in) and I understand my humidity level is supposed to be good for flowering? Interested to hear what issue you are having - a photo of the bud would be great.

anyone else comment on the humidity range?

Go back a few to see the bud pics, kinda hard to tell, but the bud is like 1/2 damaged and 1/2 fine.

I've turned off the fan and I'm looking for something I can use to wipe the leaves with.
I might isolate these plants and put them under a different light and make sure they are down wind from the others.

I'll post some update pics soon.

I really could use some more info on Powdery Mildew... They say you can't really treat just before harvest and I'm probably about 3 weeks from harvest.

As far as the humidity issue, it's been in the 30s the whole flowering time and that's supposed to be good for preventing PM and I don't spray water on the plants.

Any idea of some product I can sponge wipe on the leaves?

The only prob I ever had with fans is if they're dirty the dust bunnies make my leaves spot!

Yaaaaaa.......35-38-40% ya, I'm ok with it up around 48-50%.........BUT....IF you're gonna push the Rh ya gotta have MAD CIRCULATION!!!!
