Keffka's Recycling, KOS Blue Thai, Herbies Seeds Apple Betty, Runtz Punch

Checked in on the soil today.. still storming so I haven’t been able to mix the bins together yet but I’ve been turning the soil inside the bins. Each day it smells earthier and earthier while feeling nice and fluffy. Picking up some Azomite this weekend.

I’ve been aerating 2 gallons of bti pure water and will be pouring a bit of it on the mix when I mix the bins together. The soil is drying out at a fairly decent rate but I want to keep it moist.
Nothing better than the smell of good healthy soil! Ww wife thinks I have issues because I'm always smelling mine, lol

Lol..
I'm going to order subcool 5lb concentrate on zon..if you stick your nose it that, it's deadly..lol.. nothing smelling good about that..lol
may buy some roots organic and mix 3rd bottom to run a couple Sativas.
Don't want to run these long ass Sativa in synthetics, don't have the energy..lol..
Cheers

Yikes lol.. Just a tip for everyone. Don’t stick your nose into concentrates. Also be careful about which amendments you sniff/smell. This goes for synthetics too.. You get a whiff of the wrong synthetic and it’ll burn your entire throat up.

I love it honestly. It hits something ancient inside me. My family has been here in North America for hundreds of years (likely thousands since part of us are Mexican) and we were farmers/ranchers all the way until 3 generations ago when they started factory and government work.

My wife has thought I was crazy for a long time now lol. I’m almost always right though and have been correct about some weird stuff so she just leaves me to my devices knowing she’ll be able to smoke top quality smoke and grow any plant she wants grown 😂

This right here is one of the main differences in the work loads I’ve seen. With organics all the work is done on the front end. Mixing soils, prepping containers, spiking, etc.

With synthetics you’re always mixing up and measuring and adjusting. Instead of all the work up front it’s spread out over the whole grow.

Plus with sativas they flower so long that bloom becomes a lot of work by itself in synthetics.

Until you get used to it that is.. Then it all comes second nature after a while

Mixed up the soil bins yesterday.

One bin

Two bins

Three bins

All three bins laid out, mixed up, leveled out so I can pour a half gallon of pure water with bti before re-binning

I paid close attention to the smells and sights as I emptied each bin. I was monitoring for any sort of funky odor, odd colors, or anything anaerobic like. All I could smell was earth, which is good, it means there’s good aeration happening and the bins are cooking well.

After mixing it up well together and adding a little more water, I put the soil back into its bins trying to get as close to even amounts as possible in each.

We currently have 28 days until sprout so these bins will cook for another 38 days or so since my sprouts spend 7-10 days in a low to no nutrient mix. I am contemplating starting one plant directly in this cooked mix and seeing what happens. There really shouldn’t be any issues with it since I’m cooking the mix thoroughly, although I can see myco struggling to establish. We’ll see!

Gonna start prepping the solo cups and seedling mix today. I don’t like the limited air flow in solo cups but I’m also comfortable in them so I am gonna pop 40-50 smaller holes into the sides of the cups along with the larger bottom holes. I’ll post an example when I finish. I’ll also be mixing in some EWC and a little bit of coco with the seedling mix. I’ll add moisture and let it “cook” for 2-3 weeks then we’ll be ready to light the fuse.

I say “cook” but it’s not traditional composting. There’s no extra N or starter, just letting the microbiology get established in the mix so it’s ready to hit the ground running. I like to do this for almost all my containers. If I plan on putting a plant/seed in a container I want to make sure the mix is nice and alive before the plant hits it.

Solo cup airpot. Lol..not too big on the sides..know how you guys are with your soil..lol

Seriously, it's a good idea. I've sliced the solos about a inch long on the sides and they respond better imo then just the bottom holes

I’ve been looking for soft rock phosphate.. I can find Rock Phosphate and SuperPhos but not SRP.. I was looking online though and apparently Down To Earth sells two versions of Rock Phosphate at 0-3-0 and 0-13-0 I think one of those will be SRP.. I did learn though that it’s also called Calphos so I may have to return to the store with that information.

It’s a bit frustrating though because all of the growing stores and garden stores I go to seemed to be stocked with employees that grow in very specific ways (hydro and synthetic constantly), none of which are fully organic like us so when I start asking questions they all have a blank stare and don’t know what I’m talking about. It’s happened with Hydrolyzed fish, SRP, Gypsum, greensand, azomite, Vermiculite and a few other things so far and it’s annoying. It’s always disheartening when I know more than the employees.. Why can’t everyone be equally autistic?! 🤣🤣

If you do your seeds in soil research soil blocker. Azithmuth has experience with those I think, I was going to try it but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Probably be a benefit for you the way you do beans

All of the mini SIPs I build have those side holes. The pattern I make is a vertical line of them, then make the next column lower and in between the last set. Next column is same as the first, and I alternate like that around the cup.

I picked up a soldering iron after the last journal from talking to you and @Gee64 I didn’t even bother picking up solder, just the iron 🤣 It has quite a few uses in growing so I figured Eff it, it’s cheap for the utility of it.

One thing that intrigues me is the way roots grow in the fabric pots. They form almost a star shape so I figure different designs in the cups will lead to different root shapes.

It’s way better using the iron than anything else, like you guys mentioned, it seems to reinforce the integrity of the walls in comparison to just popping holes in it. It is a bit of a learning curve though, you can see in the images I’ve got various sizes of holes from learning how to wield the iron with the plastic.

Final designs and cups.. 4 orange for the Blue Thai, one purple and one blue for Apple Betty and Runtz Punch.

I have three serious designs as seen here:

IMG_5368.jpeg

Each one a little different but lots of holes all over.

I was playing around with words and numbers and decided to see what will happen with ridiculous stuff punched in.
IMG_5366.jpeg

The blue cup says KEFF, Purple says 420 and the orange one says 420MAGAZINEDOTCOM

If the air is appreciable I’ll likely refine my skills and work on creating designs/logos/phrases etc. for the cups going forward.. just a little theatrical flair because why not 😂

That's "photo of the month" K!..I bet you are good poking holes..lol

Man.. I planned on starting July 16th so I could take a break and thoroughly clean and maintain all my gear. Apparently it was the right call.. We haven’t had a day above 85 F yet and we’ve been averaging closer to 70 F.. That’s not warm enough for my early Veg and will require too much power from me to maintain.

We just got slammed with rain for days too.. Our weather has become way too unpredictable for me to move to outdoor growing

It's a strange year outdoors Keff!

It certainly is. I’m intrigued to see if the wildfire smoke has any impact on the grows around here. The skies have been hazy for weeks now and you can see the smoke dancing on the wind in front of you.

-Observation

I’ve noticed the regular flies seem to be attracted to the cooking soil. This makes sense since there’s decomposition happening. It doesn’t look like they’re laying eggs or burrowing anywhere, just looks like they’re attracted to it. I’ll be keeping my eye on that
