-Observation

I’ve noticed the regular flies seem to be attracted to the cooking soil. This makes sense since there’s decomposition happening. It doesn’t look like they’re laying eggs or burrowing anywhere, just looks like they’re attracted to it. I’ll be keeping my eye on that
Same here K,
I'm not cooking my soil but have it on my back porch and seems to attract mositioes and other critters. Has a lid on it but think they still get in the holes by the handles.

I think you’re right. I didn’t even notice the holes in the handles until I had already drilled a few myself. Pests could definitely get in those handle holes.

On a semi related note, the soil is in my laundry room which has been sitting at around 80-85F. This temperature should really help the cooking process a lot as higher temperatures allow for greater activity

I use an old tshirt to cover the holes

Man I’m getting antsy.. I really want to pop some seeds but these last 24 days are really important for the soil. If I jump the gun now the raw nutrients I’ve added will overwhelm the plants. It’ll be an ugly, ugly death. I’m gonna prep my seedling soil tomorrow.. Adding coco, perlite, and EWC to the seedling starter mix and will keep it moist to start everything up.. soon after that I will fill the cups I’ll be using so they can acclimatize to the room for a few days before I put myco covered seeds in them.

With every day that passes I am more and more pleased with my decision to put us on a RO system

How many more days until you plant?

8 days.. it’s been 80F plus pretty consistently in my room where the soil is cooking.. by the time I plant into it I believe it will be 45ish days cooking so we should be golden

Ordered my 10 gallons.. decided to pay a few extra bucks so I can reuse them and make training easier.

This caught my eye while I was browsing:

I may order one of these in the future and establish a perpetual LOS in it.

The pots and my new refractometer (I broke my last one with a soldering iron 🤣 which I completely forgot about until @Thirvnrob journal Thirvnrob's Power Plant - TLO Soil In SIP Containers ) should be here tomorrow, and by this time next week we should be on the cusp of seeing some baby cannabis

Blue 5 gallon bucket

6 solo cups filled 5/8 of the way worth of seedling mix posted earlier

6 solo cups filled to the lowest line with perlite, 6 solo cups filled a 1/4 of the way with coco, 1 cup of EWC all mixed in

Everything moistened until I can smash the dirt together in my palm and it forms a firm ball while squeezing out a little water and breaks away easily when pushed on. I’ll go grab an example from my previous journal and edit it in here of what this looks like.

Here’s what it should look like:

I placed the bucket in the same room as the cooking soil averaging 80F. Life will get to work in there over the next few days before I plant the seeds so it’s ready to rock on sprout and will already be adjusted to 80F+ temps

Thank you, thank you!!! At 10 pages, I am in it at a good time, I can easily catch up here! Excited to have a seat on this boat Keff.

Hands in the soil. Aaaah one of my favorite feelings!

I'm not sure what took longer:

-You trying to mix together the soil

-You writing up such great informative "encompassment" posts

-You poking all those damn holes in the solo cups

Either way, thank you for the wealth of information and the laughs as I got caught up here! I have a few more soil amendments in mind for my Fall-into-Winter Grow after reading this.

Learned a lot from all of your readers as well, I just entered year 2 of growing in June so, I'm taking it all in.

:thanks: for letting me join in on the fun!

I’m not sure which one took the longest either, but the soil mixing was by far the most work, and the solo cups were the most annoying 😂

You’re always welcome to stop by and ask any questions you may have or share any tips you’ve got. There’s quite the eccentric mix of growers in my journals and it’s typically as entertaining as it is informative

Hey, I resemble that remark! I prefer the term "eclectic." :laughtwo:

Lol that’s funny because you were one of the people I was thinking of 😂

Upon further review of my grammar, I have to concur, eclectic is probably a fairer, more respectable way of describing us 🤣
