JZ's Shootout: Part Deux

..and...we're underway!

SUBBED!!! How did I miss this??
GT

:welcome: Good to see you, GT!

'Twas a busy night/morning indeed, started by pulling everything out of the tent and vacuuming, then mopping, then mopping again with hot bleach water. Cleanliness is next to budliness! Set up the Easy2Grow system, instead of using their rigid 6mm tubing, I had a 50' roll of flexible 6mm black airline tubing, so used that - I set up 3' runs from each pod, with the 'tee' attached to the 3' run to the reservoir.

I filled two of the pots with the grodan grow cubes, the other two with coco coir. It was suggested to 'pre-charge' the cubes and the coir with the nutrient solution, so to get that going, I had to set up the reservoir first! I have 3 gallon water containers, so I used those filled with RO/DI to calibrate a yardstick to measure the volume in the reservoir. 9 gallons was added, and I dropped in my two large airstones (one 4" disk, one a squat cylindrical beast) and started the water aerating.

I dosed the water with 1 tsp/gal. of Cal-Mag, and let the water aerate for 15 minutes, then added 1 tsp/gal. of FloraNova Grow and aerated for another 20 minutes. Now that I had the blend going, I soaked the grow cubes and one of the coco pots with the solution, and after this, I transplanted the Wonder Woman clones into the pots. The one coco pot had much less moist coir (only what came from the air pot), so it was basically an experiment to see how well the wicking action would work.

The set up before attaching the reservoir, and transplanting anything:

The Grape God x Big Bud seedlings - these guys need to be less moist and seem to be craving N:

I believe that the higher % coco coir, the better. I get hydro results when every fertigation includes a generous run-through to flush. Saturated straight coco coir has plenty airspace/flow, and a huge water carrying capacity, but...
the most amazing desirable quality is that it is the cheapest stuff I can fill a pot with :smokin2:

Pure coco is best absolutely. Mixing with soil has zero benefits, only hurts the desirable effects coco has to offer

Hi JZ,
Happy to see you've got things going again. Is that Wonder Woman in the easy2grow pots? And big bud in the air pots? Right? Sorry, a little confused, just want to know what I'm looking at. And you're still growing under 2 different LED's...yes? Going to give us a comparison at the end?

Hope all goes as planned...I'll be watching.

@ Fratdogg...the "WW" JZ has is Wonder Woman, not White Widow. I got rid of the White Widow genetics...going to try something different next time, Pineapple Express... thanks to JZ :)

Great! :thumb: I like the sound of the Wonder Woman... In fact, I started some Ice recently in my search for a serious indica, which I learned from the strain library was half of Wonder Woman's genetics...

The Pineapple Express sounds like a winner also, Ive heard nothing but good things about it... I still want to try Papaya and a couple other Nirvana strains though... So many varieties... So little space and time!

:Namaste:

Nice job, Bro! +REPS!
:welldone:
Thanks Mr. Krip. I've a long ways to go before I'm as good as you and all the others here. I appreciate your support. :Namaste:

I'm liking it already - probably grab more bags of it soon!

Yes, the Wonder Woman clones are in the Easy2Grow system, with two pots under each of the different LED units. Hope the PE beans do well for you, hon! Thanks for dropping by, sqwheels!
Looking good. I like the low-tech simplicity of the auto-pot set-up, very interested to see how it works.
Thanks. I'm all about low-tech. Wicking hydroponics is very old school, and this system just applies some new school engineering to the old school method. I'm liking it so far, and the one coco coir filled pot is now matching it's twin, proving the wicking is working well. I'm psyched.
Looking good bro, intrested to see how well the auto's perform are the roots restricted to the pots or are they able to drop to wick the flood?

never seen these before.

:peace:
The bottom of the pots have a black mesh screen to hold back the media, and under the pots (and in the 'pod' are copper/gold looking cloth squares which retard root growth into the mini-reservoir of the pod (copper sulfate impregnated is my guess).

PE is a favorite of PropaGator and the subject of the future Iron Chef Grow (Dirt v. Hydro). I like the Wonder Woman specs; just have to see how they finish out!

Before splitting to work, I took a peek, and all 4 WW cuts are adding more green already; I'll probably let the reservoir drop to 3 gallons, then top off with 6 gallons of more ½ strength nutes. I'm loving the simplicity.

Thanks again for all your comments and support.

the runt in the grodan cubes got 4 cups of reservoir water top loaded, in an attempt to kick her ass into gear! She's better get with the program or she'll be hitting the streets!

Happy Holidays, Merry christmas, Festivus, whatever ;) Good Will and Love to all my 420 Family!

Hey JZ,

Thanks for the picture update...looks like thing are on the move now my friend, I'm subbed and will be watching. :bravo:

Happy Holidays :circle-of-love:

Quick update while I lay in bed feeling miserable (damned winter crud/flu/whatever):

runts in the grodan cubes are gone. bought more Canna coir, and potted up the two biggest of the Grape God x Big Bud babies, and they seem to *love* their new homes. Just gotta hope for a miracle that those two are girls.

Pix next week.

:bongrip:

Hi JZ,

Sorry you're not feeling well...I agree with P-Gator :)

What happened to the "runts"? That was wonder woman right?

Take Care of yourself...:smokin:

Get well, JZ. Recommend chicken soup, canna cure, and video gaming for distraction :)
Bought more canna, had homemade chicken and chile soup, and played video games - added some Coricidin (tastier than Nyquil, which ain't sayin' much!). Feeling mended and ready to get the coco rocking!
:high-five:

Yeah, the runts were two of the WW clones. They had a rough time, and just didn't seem to adjust in the croutons. Hope you're doing well :Namaste:

Like a dork, I was totally baked when I topped off my nutes on the 30th (adding 3 gallons to top it to 9, and instead of a TEAspoon per gallon of 'Bloom', I used a 'TABLEspoon'. No sweat, a bit of burning that showed up immediately, so just dumped half the solution, then topped with 6 gallons of RODI w/cal-mag, and called it a day. Trimmed off the residual cooked stuff and am relaxing.

Still not convinced that coco husk stuff is worth a damn, everything that's been in it has not done well until moved into 100% coir, period - so I'm gonna ditch it all (it was free, and not a bunch), and just just 100% coir from now on.

I need to budget in another 'pod' for my setup - squeeze it between the units and grow something for giggles; also the local hydro store was displaying some new LED units that looked promising...seemed to be individually lensed and with reflectors as the Advanced units. Just need to win the damned MegaMillions, right?

Batteries in the camera need recharging, so my promised pix are not forthcoming - gimme a day or so. I'm gonna pick out some interesting femmed seeds I have and try this 'wicking' method with just straight coir in the tiny AirPots and see how that goes - sent the weakling seedlings of the GGxBB to the great beyond; no room in my garden anymore for anything not thriving. I'm finding that coddling weaklings and runts only wastes my time and efforts.

Anyhow, gonna go pack some little AirPots with coir and look through my stock for the fem'd beans I have - let you guys know what I decided in a few days.

May this year bring us all joy, peace and LEGALIZATION. :Namaste:

"...no room in my garden anymore for anything not thriving. I'm finding that coddling weaklings and runts only wastes my time and efforts."

When the good shepherd abandoned his sheep to go find little lost lamby-pie,
the wolf pack flocked 'em good & propa. That's the real story.

Preach it brother!!!

I started culling runts after my third grow. I wanted to keep everything, but after trimming them up and netting less than a gram per I decided to get rid of anything smallish now and let the stronger ones have the extra real estate.

JZ,
I haven't tried the coco husk or cubes for growing, I have been sticking with the botanicare coir and it is delivering great results so far. I may even try to wash and reuse some for the next grow. The stuff is cheap, but they say it will be good for up to three years--so I'll give it a try.
